Well, being lived in times before internet i would say, that wouldn't be a tragic event.
We had all the low-fi technology - BBS systems accessible via modems, FidoNet running on that, local guerilla networks for illegal file sharing, gaming and internet connection sharing.
Being the first to put a cable from my window accross the yard to the window of my friend in our block and have seen these grassroots networks explode in two years (people were chaotically interconnected long before real bradband providers came) i have no fear loosing the internet. Ok, search would take a week instead of seconds and programming text books would get their value back.
btw i'm from former soviet ussr where the internets shut down you:)
don't you all know already that "BETA" is a new very popular cliche that means product is new innovative and fun to use and as soon as it gets out of the beta it becomes old boring stagnating crap?
Better teach her not to trust authorities and ask/doublecheck busses before going in. this way you will not make it normal for your doughter to be under survelliance from young age and make her more responsible, more aware person.
Tried to do this just 2 months ago and the client (a responsible techie from government agency) agreed at first, but 1 month later we had to add iehacks.css as too many agency dinosaurs use ie6...
except that public DNA sequences are of low quality/accuracy as they are in large made by lazy chineese who don't wash their hands that well before sequencing;)
as far as i'm experienced in MIDP development, NOKIA gives you nice SDK with loads of emulators, developer forum supported by Nokia engineers and what not.
I personally am kinda hooked up to Opera Mini, it's not good for real read, but ok for infosnacking while sitting in the bus, etc. Besides, the mobile browsing is HUGE in Japan - everybody is dug into their mobile in the trains - browsing some kind of message boards.
we are small development team working as subcontractors for customers from US and Europe for 8 years. east-europe pricing, XP/agile development, java, innovation. chechkit - www.megalogika.com
shshshshshshshs... the war is going on, we need to create more fuss around firefox in order to get the publicity and to get it proffessionals as proffessionals do install firefox on the users computers.
Tinfoil hats on.
Has anyone noticed that in all public announcements about biometric passports there always is a stress on a fact, that biometric data will be kept on the passport? What's the point of keeping your fingerprints in peace of plastic that you present to some officer with a hand that has exactly the same fingerprints?
I think the big secret here is that biometric data in the long run will be kept on the passport AND in some big government-and-who-knows-what-else controlled database. That's what's scary.
think of blogs as of just another way to communicate over internet, a new incarnation of web forums or usenet.
sometimes a unique personal worldview is much more valuable than one of "professional journalist" or "professional writer"
now think of a network formed of unique personal worldviews, the real world as touched by subjective human beings.
of course you have to dig out a lot of shit before you find anything valuable to you:)
it's not kind of work where you get money earned, but anyway - i with couple of friends are doing punkrock shows - bookings bands, renting a place, collecting money at the door, sound engineering, breaking up fights, etc...
my friend is a Lane Age junkie - it's korean MMRPG built on unreal 3d engine.
chinese are flooding this game, they are making money from it - selling game money on ebay. they even have employers and employees for that.
Both of you, please read a manifesto of Joe Stack. Terrorism is not "3d world against US" anymore.

doesn't slashdot have any bug reporting tools for us to use?
i doubt CmdrTaco is reading anything below +5 insightful ;)
huh, like all the other space junk we already have problems with?
i have played with Ubiquity a little - the main strength lies in ability to make 'ad hoc mashups' ie "email map of club 1120 in london to john"
except that public DNA sequences are of low quality/accuracy as they are in large made by lazy chineese who don't wash their hands that well before sequencing ;)
There always can be a bunch of chinese sitting in some basement internet cafe behind that "captcha decoding service" solving them online

people were living in caves for many thousand years before they even invented shower curtains. sometimes it's ridiculous all that cleanliness cult ...
"Soon, copied films will be as rare as students lighting up a joint after their exams" i wonder if students lighting up a joint are THAT rare :)
