  2. Different strokes on Shrek 2 How-To · · Score: 5, Insightful

Dreamworks and Pixar have both done very well with their CG movies, but they both have different styles and both have their own animation engines. They deserve a pat on the back for all their hard work.

As an animation major (and a slashdotting girl) I enjoy almost all "cartoons" but I don't think the final product of CG should be ultimate realism. I like the direction Dreamworks and Pixar are taking - I call it "realism with style". If we wanted ultimate realism we could just film people, but it's the style, characters and the ability of the viewer to suspend belief that makes an animation special.

Dreamworks and Pixar have both done excellent animations - if they're trying to be competitive I think it's all the better for us - we get twice as many good films. All I can say is that both of these companies are much better at creating sequels than Disney is.

  3. If only they took a chance. on Nintendo's Iwata - Innovate or Die · · Score: 3, Interesting

I like to play games on my PS2. Being a girl, I really don't like the "popular" categories of Guns, Driving, and Sports. I'm not into real violence but I like a challenge.

It takes work, but it is possible to find creative games from companies willing to put out something somewhat unique. Kya: Dark Lineage is a good game from Eden with fighting, puzzles, and stealth. Sly Cooper (Sucker Punch games) is an awesome looking game also involving some intelligence to get through.

I am disappointed in most of the sequels they are putting out now. The original Jak & Daxter was a fun game, but Jak 2 and the rumors about Jak 3 follow the formula of guns and hijaking vehicles. Yawn. Sure it's safer to crank out a tried and true character sequel, but at least put some thought into what the gamer wants to see. However I will not expect it to change, and I'll keep up my feeble search of quality games.

  4. and orange laptop! on A Raft Of New Products From Sony Japan · · Score: 1

I have a Sony Vaio laptop (it's beast-sized with a 15" screen) and it's been a good product to me - I have no complaints about it. I'm interested in the wide screen laptops, but the photos on the website looked like full-screen ones to me. Although I do like the fancy orange one at the bottom... All in all, I think Sony makes decent laptops and it's good that they're looking at the competition's success and offering the public more choices if Apple's not for them.

  5. Let's not forget on Simpsons Actors on Strike · · Score: 1

Almost half of that $360,000 is for taxes! So the actors aren't REALLY being greedy - they are obviously just compensating for inflation. Seriously, I think the Simpsons have been done for awhile. I would prefer FOX bring back Futurama, which I feel has much better content. Then again, it hasn't run for 15 seasons.
