Well, one time where people were left high and dry, was when voodoo went under. Lots of people had voodoo3s and its brethren. In this case, 3dfx had already released specs for linux (and I believe provided an open source driver at one time? can't recall). Yet with the specs released, the open source driver never achieved the same performance of what the card was capable of (comparing it to windows drivers' performance) and problems with some functionality.

When investigating for info on updated drivers the general feeling was no one is working on them because none of the devs bother with using 3dfx anymore and most users have moved on so there is lack of interest in further support. And this was only shortly after 3dfx folded. I thought this was a perfect situation for the strength of open sourcee. I actually still have that same v3 and when putting together a myth box last year, I thought it might be good enough for basic video. But in xorg, hardware overlay has been broken for quite sometime, so I couldn't control the brightness/contrast etc of videos. And opengl was pretty shaky.

I don't think the same thing would happen here, as ati is still doing fine and lots of people have their cards, now. But when a card becomes old and outdated, it will interesting to so how long it's really supported.

I've posted it before, but never really got a response. So here goes. My take is we have to look back at history. Some will argue that the reason they choose directx today is, supposedly, some things are easier vs opengl.

But way back when, I always wondered why a company like valve took an opengl engine and ported it to directx (for hl1) when no one would argue that directx was better then. Hell, carmack had his famous open letter to microsoft to ensure support for opengl. Microsoft saw how big gaming was becoming, and the best way to tie your users to one platform was to tie the developers to one platform. If hl1 was opengl only when it exploded, maybe companies like ati would have got in gear and developed better (i.e. not shit) opengl drivers. Either that or miss on out the huge hit that was/is counterstrike. I'm not saying valve was the lynchpin in how things ended up. But if big players like them stuck to opengl, more companies might be willing to port as their games would be opengl based anyway.

So why valve did that at that time I'll never understand, but microsoft understood the market in this case, all too well.

Why aren't there more game developers like id software who actually care? Carmack has said in the past he tries to keep everything crossplatform not because it's necessarily the profitable move, but because 'it's a good thing'.

You could say they don't put enough man power into writing drivers for linux, but even on the windows side, ati has been shakey in the past. I remember ati having to always release some patch because a new game exposed some other problem in their incomplete drivers.

Again it's their hardware, instead of taking years of flak in the media, why not just write up to date drivers?! What? Does it take 100 software engineers working around the clock for 5 years to have a working driver?! Couldn't they lay out a unified driver spec (similar to nvidia) put 10 of their guys on it for a month and be done with it? I don't know the inner workings of driver development, so maybe someone can enlighten why this seems to be the insurmountable hurdle that ati can never get past.

Let's see there's mythtv and freevo (there's one other that's has had some development but the name escapes me). Myth is awesome, but the gui has always felt sluggish to me, whereas xbmc is responsive and fast as one would expect from a gui. And freevo, well I heard they have made some improvements, so I can't say currently, but when I tried it awhile back it felt pretty hacked together.

If someone wants to use some old hardware to hack together a media box, this sounds like the first choice and would be a welcome addition of options on linux. It would be a shame to let it gradually be left behind with the xbox 1 platform.

I don't have one but have used xbmc at my friends and it is a joy to use. It doesn't just look good, but has a sleek, responsive interface. I do have a myth box myself, and the backend is rock solid, but have found the mythfrontend to be somewhat sluggish and have wanted the responsiveness that xbmc gives.

But I am curious as well now, I know it's main player is mplayer, but regarding the gui and everything else, I thought it was all written with a modified version of linux? I guess not, but a better explanation there would be interesting.

And from a myth users point of view, I read it can playback mythrecordings (not sure if that's accurate), but I doubt it can accesss the live tv options. Not sure about the guide and stuff. If I could use xmbc as an alternate frontend to mythfrontend, I would change in a heartbeat.

But regardless, the option to port this is a nobrainer, as it would be a shame to let this fine piece of software fade into the background as xbox dwindles.

Well, my point was back then (10 years ago), no one would argue that d3d was better. So I'm not talking about the current climate, but would make them go out of there way and port it to d3d back then? And yes I read Carmack almost did, but you can see he still really wants to stay cross platform, which in turn makes it much easier to port to another platform which of course microsoft doesn't want. And again, Carmack wants to stay cross platform not because it's where the money is at, but because he thinks it's the right thing to do. I only wish other developers thought the same.

  16. Re:Wonder how on Valve Has No Plans to Charge For Downloadables · · Score: 1

Ok, I'm going off topic but when you mention microsoft and valve in the same sentence it makes me think back to when half life 1 was first released. I was really surprised they ported an opengl engine to d3d. I've always wondered why valve did that. And quake 1 was big, but half life exploded with cs, tf2. If half life 1 was opengl only, maybe ati would have had to get it's act together a lot quicker and opengl might have more of a foothold in gaming. Microsoft saw how big gaming was getting way back then and knew the way to tie the users to one platform was to tie the developers to one platform, and that started way back then with their big push for d3d.

And it's not like anyone praised d3d back then, this is the time when Carmack had his famous open letter to microsoft regarding opengl. So I've always wondered why valve decided to go with d3d back then, and I also wonder if valve is one of the main companies that further tied us to one platform for gaming. So forgive me, if I don't gush with praise for valve the way most people do. And yes in the end it might be simply a business decision, but I'll quote Carmack on his decision with opengl and cross platform (with their games being win, lin, osx) because "it's a good thing."

And yes, haha, I screwed up with the don't in there. I meant "even if you uncheck the format the partition box" its still insists on formatting. There is no way around formatting the partition where you put / with any ubuntu live cd after dapper. Dapper is the last one with this 'bug'.

I thought it was a bug, went to file and found out through other postings that it's a feature, as someone in the past installed ubuntu on top of a previous linux install (gentoo I think) and ended up with a borked install. So to ensure a proper install it's now mandatory formatting.

How that makes sense to developer of ubiquity (the gui installer for ubuntu) is beyond me. Even strongly warn the user that they may end up with a borked install if there are previous installs there. But even if you just have /home you sol.
