  1. Infocom and Games magazine on Introducing Children to Computers? · · Score: 2, Insightful

While it might be tough to get any kid these days enthused about typing 4 pages of Basic to get a little sprit based "Game", I'd think that you might have a shot at getting a child on the right track with something like Zork II. (A WELL!!! Took me months to figure out that one) Typing is such a core skill, and you don't want someone to learn how to type in chat rooms, or email.

  2. Vintage game addict hell...... on Biggest Console System Collection on eBay · · Score: 1

You get your shipment, only to realize that the auction is for game systems........aside from perhaps a cart for the Virtua Boy......no games are included in the lot. That would be like winning an auction for someones massive p0rn collection, only to realize later that they're all on Betamax.

  3. Back in Da Day on NYT Discovers Internet's Wild Side: IRC · · Score: 1

I remember in '95 when the regulars in #hottub were just starting to get the hang of /on join commands, and Oreo thought it was a good idea to have 6 sessions all protectin each other from the newly popularized autokicks....... Simple as it was, it was amusin to kick them all out in the same alias..... And nameserv actually worked, -SabrTooth (formerly enm52910@uxa)

  4. I can see it now on Gas Plasma Antennas Help Wi-Fi Security · · Score: 5, Funny

Picture of a wide-eyed 'generic business person" with big print on the billboard that reads "Got Gas? If not, you're wireless network isn't secure."

  5. Textbook Defragging on Notebooks Replace Textbooks in Texas · · Score: 1

How many classes have ever been put on hold because a child had difficulty booting up their textbook?

  6. White Rabbit be damned on Microsoft Plans WinXP "Reloaded" · · Score: 1

Model an OS full of security holes after a movie full of plot holes - this might be an apt choice of names afterall...... If they remodel the Office Help function to give "Oracle-esque" advice....that might prove amusing as well. "Well, some people might want to tell you to ask yourself the same question, or you might just want to access the Analysis Toolpack - but me - I'd just say have a cookie and sit down - all will be clear in time"

  7. Re:Remember The Days When... on Hardware Hacking Projects for Geeks · · Score: 3, Interesting

I flipped through this book a few days ago while at the bookstore (one of those "it found me" books)

One thing that I liked about it (that was only touched upon in the review) was how the various projects give people completely unfamiliar with electronic component hobbying various levels of potential involvement.

"Want to etch your own boards?" Fine....here's some tips on how to do it

"Want to breadboard it?" Fine....here's a couple tips

"Just want to get past the soldering end and get into the chip programming elements?" Fine....the part # you're looking for is 4444 and it can be ordered from this site....

Something about this book reminds me of "Lasers, Phasers and Ion Ray Guns", a tome I found while browsing around the public library back in the early 80's. Back before you had camcorders with nightvision brought to you by bausche and lomb......you had books like these showin kids how it was conceivable they could make their own stalking tools.

It wasn't hacking, but it WAS opening doors and fostering that "why does it work" spirit that all too easily is put down by those who claim to have reinvented their own intellectual wheels......

I'd much rather be the father that says "sure I'll take you to radioshack, what are we building today?" than the one who says "if you imitate the work of others, you'll never learn anything"
