"Database Design for Mere Mortals" by Michael Hernandez and "SQL Queries for Mere Mortals" by Hernandez and John Viescas. These are excellently written books that really do a great job of covering the essentials, but are suitable even for non-technical folks. They are extremely approachable, and if you're starting to look at theory, I would highly recommend you put these books near the top of your start list.

I've been using GrandCentral for about a year and a half now. The level of control is just stunning. One number that rings your cell phone, home phone and work phone at once; pick up the call from any of them. Transfer phones during the call. Different greetings for friends, family, work, and other contacts. Listen to the message as it's being left. Pick up the call during the message if you like. Voice mails are available to download as mp3 files. Need to save an important message? You can easily. I've saved messages about projects with other files in my project directory. No more looking for that message. Nice! Call anyone in your address book from your address book. This is free now, but will be a paid service. I knew going in this wouldn't be free forever - free outgoing calls to anywhere in the country?? I hope they don't overcharge for this - if it's reasonable, it's totally worth a fee. This service is great and quite solid. If you're waiting for it, hold on... It's worth the wait!

  11. The Bigger Issue on How To Help Our Public Schools With Technology? · · Score: 1

is not how to get computers into classrooms, but what do the students learn on them? Are they taught how they work, how programming works, how the logic is constructed; or do they learn how to be good consumers, to buy the Dell PC with Windows and MS Office, to use Google, because that's what they learned in school and they know how to use it? I'm all in favor of increasing technology education in schools as long as the schools recognize that the computers are tools, not the end result. If we teach our children how the computer does what it does, and not just how to use it, then we accomplish something. BTW, a lot of kids don't have to be taught how to use a keyboard and mouse. My kids are self-taught!

"Can the XO-1's charitable appeal, unique chassis and dual-mode screen compete with the superior performance and standard operating systems of its newer peers?" Would there be Eee wanabees without the XO? The world is a big place, and products (hopefully) evolve with demand. XO is still a good idea and has served a useful purpose. I'm sure that if someone wants to send a competitor oversees to an underprivileged child, that's ok, too.

  18. Re:too racy on Batman Discussion · · Score: 1

For me, that's why the film worked. Usually, the lack of a coherent story throughout is tne kiss of death, especially for a Batman film. But here it worked. Why? Largely because of the way the Joker character was written and performed. During the film, you didn't have a good sense of where this all started, where it was going, what it meant. It kept me from being comfortable, from relaxing into the story. And that, I think, was the point. What made the Joker character and the film work was the randomness. The audience didn't know what was coming next, just as the characters in the film didn't, and we often didn't know how to react, much like the characters in the film didn't. In a way, it served to put us in the movie. Of course, with all of the attention paid, deservingly, to Ledger's Joker, it is easy to overlook Two-Face. That is a shame. I thought that, for once, a filmmaker and actor combined to really get that character right. Usually in these films, two villans muddles the storyline; here, the two villans worked well together. Nice to know it can be done. One nitpick (though I could do several): Can DC and Marvel force filmmakers to sign a contract stipulating that major characters will not be killed off? I know there are times in a story where it is necessary, but it is becoming so trite. It is no longer the shock to the audience it once was. Please, can we really surprise the audience and keep the characters alive, even if only once?
