  1. Boy am I enlightened on Microsoft Claims Linux Security a Myth · · Score: 1

I guess that the 80% of all web and web application servers that run linux must be wrong. Thanks for pointing that out to us. I am now going to shut down all of my servers and run out and get some Windows boxes. All kidding aside, how can this guy make statements like that and have any credibility with those who know. I guess that it must just be aimed at upper management personnel that while maybe good managers, do not have real world hands on experience. Most desktops run windows = most servers should too seems to be the equation that they are trying to convey.

No, I don't want Windows. Otherwise that is what I would buy. I am very adept at using a terminal and hacking away at config scripts. It is just that I don't want to do that anymore. You comments are like those that say that the only way to really write code is to use vi or Emacs, and not a good IDE. To take it further, I guess I should not listen to CDs, but rather use an old wax drum phonograph. My .bashrc file can beat up your .bashrc file.

I am actually considering doing something similar. I want to use one as an in-home server for a single web site, DNS, file server, and mail server. I had thought about a G5 but that is overkill and very costly. For $579 for the "turbo mini" and $499 for OSX Server (10 user) I could be all set up for a fraction of the cost of an xServe. And considering the low load on the box, it should run just fine.

He just wants hardware costs to come down so he can get into emerging markets AND keep his profits. I have absolutely no problem with profits. But this just shows how MS uses sideways tactic to get them. In a time when the tech industry is realizing the high TCO of the redmond giant, what do they do? Try to get the hardware makers to lower their costs. Someone really has to tell the emperor about his clothes.

  16. Yes, well maybe... on If Mac OS X Came to x86, Would You Switch? · · Score: 4, Interesting

For the past several years I have been buying nothing but Apple products for myself, coworkers and family members. I have been willing to pay a higher price for better (more innovative) physical design, less cabling, and an innovative OS. The downside has been limited hardware choices that are generally a few steps behind the curve of x86 machines. That being said, I would seriously consider 'switching' to OS X on a x86 machine if it was produced and supported by Apple and possibly the hardware vendors. At the same time, however, I really like the ever evolving designs that come from Apple. When was that last compelling design change of the ubiquitous x86 desktop or laptop (maybe from Alienware)? So for me to do a pseudo-switch, I would probably also need to see some changes from the hardware vendors (how many cables run across the desk of a typical workstation?). To sum it all up, I think it would be a great thing for Apple to release OS X to the masses. It would certainly send Balmer on another sweaty spin!

However, I am still light years ahead of the pipe that come to the house. I can't imagine how long it would take to download a full length DVD to my TiVo. Sometimes you can see one technology push another's development, but I doubt that TiVo an NetFlix have enough juice to get Time Warner to ope up the pipes for their service. Especially in my area where we have so many 'on-demand' channels to choose from, including the ones that come from all the major cable networks.
