    If you read the article, you would realize that China's strategy is to be as seamless as possible, only filtering out content they don't like, not entire domains. So yes, maybe you could see slashdot, but that doesn't mean you could read this article.

    You must not be a college student. It is most certainly a fad amongst students at my school, and I suspect other universities as well.

    So if somebody writes a virus that exploits a bug in windows, then the virus writer is completely innocent? After all, they are just using a feature (or bug) of windows.

    Have you ever noticed that when they widen a road, the traffic doesn't tend to get lighter? Same concept applies here. Just because the mpg gets better doesn't mean we won't need to import oil from the middle east or somewhere.

    Maybe so, but imagine if the US started filtering content like China does to prevent the overseas content from coming here.

    In addition, when moving between apartments in college (every year basically), it is a pain to move things, and not having a big heavy TV to deal with is nice.

    Well, when lcd TVs break into the general market and everybody has one, you can forget a normal TV and just use your computer with TV tuner hooked up to an lcd TV/monitor

    The problem with your apache example is although it is popular, it is popular amongst people who know the ins and outs of it. Apache is not an end-user program.

    OTOH, a blind person will never be able to experience reading like you do since they can not see. This technology seems to be the best alternative out there to actually seing, WRT reading at least.

    That is basically how the service will be paid for. Advertisements on the page based on the contents of the email you are reading.

    On the other hand, using regular PCs is what google does well. They don't rely on such expensive hardware, but redundant cheaper hardware. I wouldn't put it past google to do this cheaper than you might think possible

    Unfortunately or not, this is not what the bosses want to hear. They want to know that profits will be $1 million. Perhaps the spreadsheets have not adapted to uncertainties for a reason.

    For Universities, the problem is not necessarily just copyrights, although that is a consideration too. What is more important to them is the high cost of using so much bandwidth from all the downloading/uploading.

    Maybe this particular proposal will not go through, but the government is already working on solving the problem of wiretapping at a more fundamental level - Internet Protocol
