If you read the article, you would realize that China's strategy is to be as seamless as possible, only filtering out content they don't like, not entire domains. So yes, maybe you could see slashdot, but that doesn't mean you could read this article.
So if somebody writes a virus that exploits a bug in windows, then the virus writer is completely innocent? After all, they are just using a feature (or bug) of windows.
Have you ever noticed that when they widen a road, the traffic doesn't tend to get lighter? Same concept applies here. Just because the mpg gets better doesn't mean we won't need to import oil from the middle east or somewhere.
In addition, when moving between apartments in college (every year basically), it is a pain to move things, and not having a big heavy TV to deal with is nice.

OTOH, a blind person will never be able to experience reading like you do since they can not see. This technology seems to be the best alternative out there to actually seing, WRT reading at least.
On the other hand, using regular PCs is what google does well. They don't rely on such expensive hardware, but redundant cheaper hardware. I wouldn't put it past google to do this cheaper than you might think possible
"The expected Year 1 profit is $1 million, but there's a 30 percent chance of losses for the first two years."
Unfortunately or not, this is not what the bosses want to hear. They want to know that profits will be $1 million. Perhaps the spreadsheets have not adapted to uncertainties for a reason.
For Universities, the problem is not necessarily just copyrights, although that is a consideration too. What is more important to them is the high cost of using so much bandwidth from all the downloading/uploading.
It seems to me that this proposal is right in line with this
Maybe this particular proposal will not go through, but the government is already working on solving the problem of wiretapping at a more fundamental level - Internet Protocol
