Well, then we should probably start killing them off in self-defense. The only way to kill a corporation is to somehow destroy enough of their cash flow in a way that won't invoke any insurance they might have. Then, cut off its head and stuff the mouth with garlic, burn the body and scatter the ashes to the four winds.
"Yes, bow down to the status quo. You are not worthy of the knowing the secret inner workings of the holy.doc format, yet you must be compatible to have a chance. Too bad for you, you peon. Muahahahah!"
Who the fuck are you anyway, Bill Gates? Or do you just get to lick his ass clean after every crap?
What this world needs is a free Lisp OS (with the low-level stuff written in Modula or something if necesssary.)
Too bad all the free Lisp OS projects deteriorate into arguments about implementation details...

Really? My Win2K box crashes on me in games sometimes, but I'm using reference drivers and hot-rodded BIOS settings, so I guess I don't blame it. Actually, it usually just locks up rather than actually blue-screening.
I've never had a crash through normal (non-gaming) use, though. But I don't do any development on it, that's all in Linux because after all, *nix is the only serious choice for real work.;-D
It's not like that by default because it's tuned as a server by default.
I don't give a crap about Mom and Pop, I was just giving you some tips. If you really want Linux as a desktop alternative for the unwashed masses then get to work. Most of us aren't getting paid for this, you know. It doesn't do much good to complain.
Folks, your grandma won't know how to re-nice various processes!
That's right, it's fuckin' UNIX dude. It ain't a toy. I was just giving you some tips, not claiming that Linux should have higher desktop penetration. Your gramma should use a Mac.
You're wrong. It seems slower than Windows because it's not given a higher priority than other processes as is standard in Windows.
With a low-latency kernel patch and X reniced to -10 it is at least as fast as Windows.
Gnome and KDE are a bit heavyweight, there's no denying, but I don't use that Windows-wannabe crap. Microsoft is better at it;^) When I use Linux I want straight, ugly, raw, powerful X with lots of terminal windows and virtual desktops, LyX, xfig, xdvi and the Gimp, all the stuff that make UNIX fun. When I want Windows I use XP.
What you need to get into your head is that most of us don't really give a fuck what the lusers think, truth be told. Linux isn't going to go away just because it doesn't get popular. We're not selling a product here. We're not groveling for your approval or trying to live up to your expectations. We're hobbiests working on a cool project because we like to and it's fun. Help out with real code or docs or shut up and go home.
I can just see you response ahead of time "Oh, you are so elitist calling people lusers just because they can't learn Unix. Linux will never get anywhere with an attitude like that." Well, shove it. I don't care if everybody uses Linux or bends over for the Microshaft, as long as there aren't a bunch of whiney lusers around demanding that I make things drool-proof so they can share in my fun. Fuck em if they can't RTFM.

True. In fact a good friend of mine used to work in the Exchange support group, and apparently Microsoft has a private knowledge base, almost as big as the public one, of bugs that are not to be disclosed as bugs under any circumstances. If one of these secret bugs is thought to be the culprit, the tech will just say, "I'm talking out of my ass, but let's try this..." or "maybe something goofy like this will clear it up," or (wait for it...) "it just does that sometimes."
It made me want to puke when he told me that.
Of course, who's to say HP doesn't do the same with HP-UX, or IBM with AIX? At least you can look at the source to Solaris, so they can't truly hide bugs.
As far as X windows applications go, they are usually worse then Windows applications... although Gtk and QT (and their respective desktop environments) are doing much better then most older applications.
Why would a blind person want to run a GUI? You don't need one with Unix, and the command line is fully capable with multitasking and everything... a braille reader and keyboard is all they would need to surf the net with lynx, chat on irc, use email, code, whatever.
Voice recognition, et al, will be brilliant for quadraplegics, but Unix is great for blind people right now! (And deaf people too;^)
Actually a lot of deaf people can't read. While it is a bit harder for them to learn without a spoken language as a basis, the blame is mostly with a disinterested educational system.
What kind of features would the deaf need? I have a computer at work with no sound card, not even the crappy little PC speaker. I haven't really found that it interferes with my computing experience at all. Oh wait, the visual bell setting on your terminal! That's about all a deaf person would need so, yep, got it covered;^)
There are a lot of cool things about plan9, but I just can't get over the mouse-centric GUI. Even in the terminals you have to use the mouse all the time and I freaking hate it.
And the Inferno GUI just seems like a buggy and half-assed Windows 95 clone.
The lack of a web browser for plan9 pretty much sucks, too.
Oh well, I hope that some of their better ideas make it into more mainstream OS's (yeah, right.)
Hmmm... 2.4.14 compiles fine for me without patching that bug. Of course the loopback device module doesn't work, but everything else, including full Athlon optimization is working like the proverbial "greased weasel". Also, it compiles fine with the latest gcc, no need for an older compiler. I guess they cleaned up the code.
#1: I personally don't find Penthouse offensive, and I don't have a problem with my own kids seeing it (hell, I used to look at my dad's when I was 4 years old.) But like I said earlier, do we want parents forbidding their children access to the public library?
#2: The Library of Congress will have copies for researchers. You don't need one in every library.

OK, mouse boy. How's that Visual Basic coming?
These are nice...

You guys probably did not have DMA enabled on your hard drives... this makes a huge difference.
Come on guys, that was flamebait. Mod me down, I'm trying to lose karma here ;^)

Ummm... no.
MSCE = Master of Science [Computer,Civil] Engineering.
MCSE = Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer.
Bonus points: Which of the above are actually engineers?

Hell, you could probably hack winver.exe with a hex editor...
Your xterm should have an option for a visual bell...
Point.

Ummm, no, they learn about it on IRC way before it gets posted to bugtraq.

Yeah, like I said, too bad censorware doesn't work...
