Record the sound of the phone ringing to an.au file then cat it to dev audio (cat./phone.au >/dev/audio) at random times of the day / night via a script in cron. We had one of our helpdesk folks going nuts over this one.
This is a tough lesson learned for Mr. Fiola, but the lesson is, always request a clean build when receiving new equipment in the workplace. That would have eliminated the malware and given him a clean system to work on.
Remember - these "clumsy ships" are how you get your bad ass computers, wide screen TV's and crude oil. These "clumsy ships" are vital to the way the world gets the things that they want / need. The captain made an error in judgment, but I am certain that all of the professional bulk carrier sea captains and ships mates that are reading this would have done differently...

It would seem to me that a patch to copyrighted software would be a derivative work based on the software and therefore should be covered under most boiler plate license agreements. Is this not the case?
