I disagree that Microsoft is a monopoly --- There are other options out there, both free (Linux) and not-so-free (Apple) --- You have a choice on what you want to buy. For every microsoft product out there, there are options. You need Office? OpenOffice is available and quite good. IIS? Apache. IE? Firefox. Zune? iPod.
Microsoft has a very large market share because they are arguably good at what they do. Some people have to run their software, but is that because of them or should we blame the authors of the software some of us depend on for not porting their programs into other OS platforms? It's not Microsoft that limits what we do, it's the choice of all of the companies to build the software that doesn't work on anything else which then leaves us with no choice.
This isn't like your cable company where you don't have a choice.
It becomes more true with every year, Microsoft is becoming less and less of a monopoly as time passes.
Flame away.
For me, VPN usage is where most of my bandwidth comes from, I've pushed multiple GB per day just in my VPN connections working from home, I usually have atleast 2 VPN tunnels up at any one time --- this does not include NetFlix and X-Box live that gets watched by the rest of my family --- I honestly would be scared if I was getting capped.
I am very disapointed to see Juniper on that list, not as though that list really means shit. Juniper is finally releasing products that I can actually use in the environments that I work. Personally I'd rather work with their equipment over Cisco's equipment any day of the week. It's still on the expensive side, but you get more bang for your buck when you compare their products next to Cisco... One thing I wish they would come out with is a line of switches that's just a step down from the EX line --- They are nice, but I really don't need 20 layer 3 switches in a network of 20 switches. JUNOS rocks.
I know this is a little off topic, but I would like to agree with this post. I got to test some "alternative" programs after I dropped out of high school.. They offered me a chance to go back under different rules, so I did... One of the differences is that my education was put on my own shoulders, no teachers telling me what to do, they were simply there to give guidance when asked for it. I was allowed to test out of things I already knew, and given the opportunity to learn those things that I didn't know so well. Homework was not required, or even encouraged. I went from a student that had a.9 GPA when I dropped out my junior year to a student that was almost getting straight A's --- On top of that I was able to catch up and graduate only half a year later than I was supposed to (quite a big deal considering how far behind I was)... Our education system is broken for some people, and it's a shame that most like myself don't get the opportunity that I did to graduate under a system that while it may not work for everyone, does work for some of us. Some people do better when they are put in charge of their own destiny and don't have someone telling them what to do every moment of the day. It turns out that for some people the thing that causes problems in school turns out to be very valuable in their career after school is over with.
Sad thing is that the program that allowed me to do this only lasted a couple of years... It really is a terrible shame.
It's hard enough to ensure that your servers get backed up, I manage multiple corperate networks and I don't backup any of the workstations on any of them. None of my network users have the ability to view the local hard drives, they can't save to them, there is no caching on the outlook clients, ALL profile information is not only setup with roaming, but uses folder redirection, I don't have to worry about out of sync systems in regards to roaming profiles and there is never any personal (or company sensitive) information on a computer.
If a computer malfunctions or starts acting up with this method I can swap it out quickly or just initiate a reload from a stored image on the network. Infact, as a policy, ALL of my workstations are reloaded with a new image once per year to ensure that all workstations are running the current versions of programs and that any fixes are implemented across the whole company.
I can't imagion having to actually take into consideration what users may have stored locally. Screw that.
When you order licensing through the Microsoft Open Licensing program you get a volume license key, this is not a blanket "use as much as you want" license. You are allowed to use the key on the number of machines that you have XP licenses for (typically through eOpen Licensing). In the case of Vista, two editions have "downgrade rights" which allow you to load XP Pro in place of Vista, those two editions are Business and Ultimate. If you get a machine with Vista Home or Home Premium you are out of luck legally if you want to load XP unless you have some spare non-OEM XP licenses.
The same policy is true with much of M$ software, you can buy a Server 2008 Std license and legally run Server 2003 R2 Std or Server 2000 if you want... SQL 2008 license can be run as SQL 2005 or SQL 2000 etc.
Funny you should combine the two, as last month I was at the lake doing some scuba diving when the call came in that work needed some emergency router configuration changes... Got my laptop, put in the cell card, and did the work I needed to do at the lake between dives... Sure am glad that I was able to use the available technology vs. having to leave the park, drive to work, and do what I needed to do, which would have ruined the remainder of my fun for the day...
I order all of our new Business PC's with Vista licenses, however I then load them with my volume licensing copy of XP excercising the downgrade rights that come with the Vista Business edition... I figure I may as well get the newest license, does not mean that I'm going to use it, as much as M$ would like to think that I am.
How many of those 100 million users are part of that statistic because they were forced to be (i.e. could not get XP), and how many of those 100 million have wiped Vista off their machines and reverted back to XP?
That number really just tells you how many copies were sold, I'm sure it would be much less if MS didn't force people to get it on new machines.
They claim that it's as successful as the launch of XP, well no shit! I think they sell more computers now days than they did when XP came out, so take that into consideration.
100 million copies, 75 million disapointed customers
Yup, seen these things more times than I'd care to count... Not really news.
Enjoy your jumping and congrats on your AFF... Hurry up and get that 'A' because that's when the real fun starts, being able to jump in groups and all... I stopped about a year ago at 230 jumps, but I really do miss it...
--- There's nothing quite like the smell of Jet A in the morning.
As another former submariner, this is no surprise to me either, and I will second that the crews on our boats are going down the toilet. Alot of this is coming from the nintendo / playstation generation that is now going to our crews and have this ideal that the world (and navy) owes them a favor, they forget that they did join the military and that unlike burger king it's not all done their way. It's the kinder, gentler navy. I don't believe that this is the root cause of another countries submarine sneeking into our play field though, while it is a big deal on many other levels.
The thing about this incident is that desiel submarines are in fact very very quite. It is not unbelievable that a submarine could get into an area that we do not want them if they are running silent. The only way that you are going to detect a silent submarine in many cases is to go active with the sonar, which is something that you do not always want to do because it gives away your location as well.
Submarines are built to sneak around, and it looks like they did what they were designed to do. Why is this a slashdot story?

FYI, alot of the clubs and bars will not accept your Military ID because ever since they changed them to the new format they are no longer a FULL ID. In order to be a full valid ID for identification purposes there must be more than a name and picture, it must also include your height / weight / eye color / blah blah blah... The old military IDs had all that information, the new ones dont...
However that doesnt mean that they should have to COLLECT all of that information, that is bullshit...
Yea, your right, your gonna run Winblows 98 better than Gnome on this laptop w/ 32mb of RAM... Linux is awsome with resorces, but lets face it, it's much more advanced than Win 98 and that needs to be taken into consideration.
I think the basis of comparison here was more towards the current operating systems, i.e. Win XP
Has nothing to do with this issue. But, if you want to hit up that topic, maybe you should think about what your saying before you open your mouth.
A lot of those "fuckers" that you think should starve are Military Vets, the guys that fought our wars for us, the guys that watched their friends die or may have even taken a bullet for us.
It's awsome that you think they should just die. Your such a great guy.
It would be really kick ass if this country took care of those who fought for it, especially those who HAD normal lives and would of really turned out to be something, except the gov't forced them into Nam... Do you think they deserve to starve?
Like I said, think about what your about to say, then open your mouth. Until then, shut up and get a clue.
How can you say that someone should find better recreation just because YOU don't feel that it's worth the cost? I really wish that it was not necessary to use up so much of our limited resources to do what I enjoy, but I'm not about to give up all of my hobbies just because they are not good for the oil crisis.
Myself, I take part in many of these fuel consuming activities. I enjoy having a great time, and I have faith that we will adapt and overcome before we run out of oil. At least I hope we do, because solar powered planes are gonna be a bitch on cloudy days.
Earth First, we can drill the other planets later;)
Being that I work on systems which have a government security clearance requirement, passwords on our networks have a few enforced rules..
As a system admin and user however, I really do not believe that the rule of changing passwords, especially when combined with a rule that says you can not use the same password for the next 10 changes, is really a bad idea. I have always used very hard to guess passwords like hcwlcd3cm28MP (and no, this is not a password I use;).. Problem is, using passwords such as this can get VERY confusing if you have to keep changing it, especially when you start having 6 passwords like this in use on various systems because some of them make you change at different time schedules. Chances are that the average user is just going to start using stupid crap like "LisaMarie89" which happens to be their daughters name and year of birth because anything else just gets to hard to remember anymore.
IMO, if you setup the rules so that passwords have to be hard to guess, dump the password change requirement, or make it so that it is extremely rare and so that a few passwords can be recycled.
Be interested to hear how other admins feel about this.
There are some services provided on the internet that make your server more likely to get hit with these stupid things, and personally I think that services like this are nothing but a pain in the ass and a crutch to people trying to run some types of non-spamming sites...
In example, I run a couple online forums. These forums can be configured to send notification messages to it's users when someone replies to a post they made or sends them a private message. They can also subscribe to threads and get updates anytime someone makes a new post that meets their subscription. I was added to a blacklists in the past because suddenly someone who REQUESTED these simple notification messages (which most people find very nice to get) decided that they didnt want it and submitted it as spam.. Suddenly my entire server cant send emails to anyone running that blacklist, for no good reason whatsoever.
The problem with these services is that they require end users to be smart. Problem with that is there is alot of stupid idiots on the internet that will submit shit that should not be submitted, something they asked for that could be turned off by simply changing their profile options.
I hate those stupid services, and I will not run them on any of my servers, I'll deal with the junkmail and let each individual person deal with the junk as it arrives in their box, most email clients do offer junk mail filtering, and I figure that if they are not smart enough to use them (or ask for help setting it up) than they can deal with it. I would prefer this over people who do know how to use a computer not being able to get emails from legit senders.
Same post, with paragraphs... I have not posted here much and failed to realize that this post required HTML tags to seperate things, an unusual lack of attention to detail for me;)
Ok, my case is a little bit different, but I've been reading this blog with great interest. I am looking at going into a networking IT field.. I get out of the military in December and I am moving to Austin, TX in January to begin my new life.. I have been in the military for the last *9* years and joined straight out of high school, so to say that I'm a bit nervous about it is the understatement of the year.
I have been assigned to submarines for 7 1/2 years of my service, not exactly the greatest place to try and work on college courses, so I really do not have any college education and I'm not sure that I see going full time student is going to be possible as I do have mouths to feed.
I have been working with computers since I was a kid, I actually did work for a couple internet providers starting when in 94 (I was 15 years old). I have had Certifications in NT (never finished MCSE), plan on getting some updated ones very soon. NT Certs are no longer recognized. Did my CCNA few years back, also expired, getting that back up to date within the next couple months. I had a business license with a friend for a couple of years while in the military, we had one customer, 6 H&R Block locations, we were responsible for giving the owner of those stores his first year that he did not have any downtime during tax season (he was used to over a week per store per season).. Best reference I could ever hope for there.
My experience: 9 years working with IT in the Navy (I'm a missile tech, so IT is not my primary duty, however I was the only lan administrator on my last boat for about 4 years) 2 years working with H&R Block I have worked with DOS, Windows NT / 2000 / XP / 2003, MS Exchange, HP-UX, Linux, Novell 3.12, Cisco equipment, have some HTML and SQL (mySQL) experience as well. I will have my CCNA again when I get out, possibly my MCSE (will have atleast a portion of it done).
I'm really good with this stuff, I can troubleshoot anything, seems as though I can always figure out whatever is wrong in a short period of time even if it is something I have never seen or heard of. I'm an incredibly hard worker that loves this field and will do whatever it takes to succeed at it. I am lacking the whole collage education, I can only hope that this doesn't hurt me to much.
Basicly, I would like to hear it, straight from all of you, how do you honestly think I will do in Austin? Am I heading for trouble? should I focus on anything specific?

That will be sweet! I can just see it now, sitting at home, channel surfing, and everytime you hit a channel that has a commercial on it, the TV just locks up so you can't surf.. Nevermind that it just stopped you on that TV premire of Brokeback Mountain that you didnt want to stop and watch anyway.. lol...
Get real, this is pathetic. I will *NEVER* own a device which has this feature in it, I promise.

I had a business license with a friend for a couple of years while in the military, we had one customer, 6 H&R Block locations, we were responsible for giving the owner of those stores his first year that he did not have any downtime during tax season (he was used to over a week per store per season)
My experience:
9 years working with IT in the Navy (I'm a missile tech, so IT is not my primary duty, however I was the only lan administrator on my last boat for about 4 years)
2 years working with H&R Block
I have worked with DOS, Windows NT / 2000 / XP / 2003, MS Exchange, HP-UX, Linux, Novell 3.12, Cisco equipment, have some HTML and SQL (mySQL) experience as well.
Nate
Ok, my case is a little bit different, but I've been reading this blog with great interest. I am looking at going into a networking IT field.. I get out of the military in December and I am moving to Austin, TX in January to begin my new life.. Best reference I could ever hope for there.
