Everyone seems to be making a big fuss over this which isn't such a big deal. Oxford computer society's take on it was this. What they did wasn't anything fancy, it was just bummed up for the paper because exciting things don't happen in oxford very often. I've no idea why the guardian and the eeb are reporting this now, 1.5 months after the OxStu's headline, perhaps it's just a slow news day or somthing. This is all getting blown out of all proportion, at the time I thought what a big pile of bollocks and now this is just rediculous

    That's right. It's a hell of a lot easier to download a 500Mb MPEG

I think it is easier as you can be very blase about downloading and all it is is click and wait, no human intervention required, and if the film doesn't come down or is of bad quality you've lost nothing

    from a dodgy site

This is a bit dramatic isn't it, as it is distributed filesharing there is no central 'dodgy' site. What is it that makes a site dodgy? Is it the evil bit?

and then sit in front of the computer for a couple of hours watching a blurry image

Who says it's not a direct DVD rip, in which case it would be as good quality as buying a DVD in the shops

    on a 17" monitor

How do you know how big my monitor is, or my TV or even if I or anyone else here have TVs? I watch my DVDs on my computer as it tis the biggest screen I have, and I wouldn't be surprised if that is the same for a lot of people here

than it is to pass by the cinema or buy a DVD. ;-)

Whenever I go to the cinema it is delibrate because I want to go to see a film, I don't just pass it and go in. I think going to the cinema is better as a socil thing with others, and in my experiance it is difficult to get a big group of people to go to the cinema upon passing. Also the showing times are restrictive, whereas on the PC or with a DVD you can just press play, so I would say that this is significantly more conveniant

Also, it is true, DVDs are expensive. You don't buy a DVD unless you know you like the film, it offers no scope for seeing films you've never seen before (unless you're rolling in money)

I'm not saying that I agree with downloading films, and I can't I have done many times but I really dislike seeing sensationalist posts taking a very specific example and wildly generalising it

in C++ == will check for the same address if both side of the operator are pointers to things. If they are objects or references to objects it will do a value comparison based on a user specified function called operator==().

Not at all, in a promiscuous species it is benificial for the males to try to mate with as many females as possible, whereas it is still only benificial for the females to mate witht he same regularity as before (actually less as in a promiscuous species males become much more fertile -a chimp has testicles 4x the size of human testicles compared to body size). So the females have more choice to choose from so are more picky and it becomes much less likely for a female to consent to mating with a male.

So, net result, females need less sex because of increased male fertility, so overall males get less, but because of the competitive environment they want more and are more aggressive. Females want less because they have more choice and it pays to be picky.

Less sex and more aggression doesn't sound like the kind of environment I'd like to live in personally, would you?

A species in which females are sexually active (in heat) most all the time, and which engages in sex for recreation. But in which the females care for the young and the males move to the next available females means MUCH more procreation (and happier males).

It wouldn't mean more procreation, it is in such a way that just the right amount of procreation occurs and this polygamous system would adapt to this meaning that some males have multiple mates and some have none. It would probably be a much more violent society also because there would be more competition for mates

I disagree with this, windows 98 and windows XP are quite different in how they work, but thier philosophy is exactly the same, unlike different linux distros whose (sp?) innards are basically the same, but philospohys are completely different.
