Maybe Paris Hilton wants a smart phone so she can leak her contact list out and make the news while all of her friends have to change their numbers wants a smartphone, and maybe the Paris Hilton wannabes want one, but you will sell a phones AND PDAs if you provide them to people like us.

Because Comcast is the ONLY option for broadband other than satellite. They have a monopoly and they know it. When the county started to roll out wireless my city was one of only two or three that refused to even ask to be considered for phase I - if I understand the (somewhat secretive) agreement Comcast gets an exclusive franchise in exchange for cash payments to the city.
DSL isn't available (and even if it were I'd have to buy a phone line to go along with it which would make it even more expensive than Comcast). No wireless. No competing cable. No fiber for miles.

No, it couldn't, and no, it isn't. MS has far too much power and (more importantly) far too much money for such a thing to EVER happen. The opportunity was lost back in the 90s when Clinton called off the justice department actions in exchange for an endorsement of the clipper chip.
The only vulnerability faced by MS are a voting public that tires of ever-increasing taxes and millages to pay for MS software in the schools and the government offices. The student/home edition of MS software was released to squash what little resistance remained in even that arena.
I am perfectly comfortable with nuclear power. Give me decent lease payments and I'll let you build a reactor in my back yard.

One of the hosted IRC services (Talkcity maybe?) used to censor their chatrooms... circumference, circumstance, circumvent, and cum laude would all result in people being ejected (and often banned) from the room.
I also once saw some Disney-themed virtual world where you wander around seeking treasure or something like that where they completely censored out any and all numbers just in case you are a 13 year old girl trying to give out your phone number.
But it IS tolerated. The police chief answers to the mayor, the mayor will be reelected and so can't be expected to do anything. The people of Houston are idiots and are going to get exactly what they deserve. If they are too lazy to throw out a mayor for tolerating this then nuts to 'em.
CAN-SPAM was written very tightly not to avoid unintended over-reach or be avoid being struck down (those concerns never seem to stop them on any other subject). CAN-SPAM was written to a) confuse all of the sub 100 IQ voters into thinking that something was going to be done, and b) placate the DMA wonks (who provide more trips to Hawaii than the voters do).

The two D-MI Senators (including the one who replaced the R-MI Senator) ignored me entirely. The R-MI Senator promised to look into it but did nothing and blew a double digit lead to the new D-MI Senator and went on to become secretary of the D o Energy to lobby for funding for the DoE-owned golf course(s). The two aforementioned Reps promised to look into the matter and did nothing. The state's attorney general blurted out an opinion that spam is protected under the first amendment.
The people elected into office aren't bright enough to do anything about the problem. The people who repeatedly put them there are more interested in protesting this and whining about that to care.
In the meantime, by blocking ALL email originating in APNIC and RIPE, nullrouting any email that refers to pages hosted by geocities, using SpamAssassin with a trigger score of 3 and making liberal use of mailinator and other disposable email addresses I can keep the spam that makes it to my Thunderbird spam folder to a half dozen a week.
This has been pointed out repeatedly both before CAN-SPAM was enacted (and it went through) and afterwards (and it hasn't been fixed). And the people who put that law into place are STILL THERE . I have had personal, face to face conversations with two US Reps (Knollenberg R-MI and McCotter R-MI) over the issue and neither one care. Both will be reelected to their underpaid offices in DC this year. Both will probably receive tens of thousands of votes from people who claim to hate spam but are too @*&!^^ apathetic and lazy to bother checking the other box on the form to do anything about it.
EVERY incumbent should be thrown out of office. A friend's father died after he turned up at the hospital while having a heart attack, and the hospital insisted on checking out his insurance first, then said they didn't want to deal with that insurance company, and sent him to another hospital. He died trying to drive himself to the next hospital.
If this is true then your friend is all but guaranteed several hundred thousand dollars (with a crummy attorney) to several million with a good one. There is absolutely NOTHING legal about these alleged actions on the part of the hospital and there is no defense that will save them. Dollars to donuts the hospital will answer the lawyer's phone call with "how much to settle?".

(Or, better yet, a law requiring any mortgage broker who responds to actually give me that 30 year, 0 down $300,000 loan for $500/month)
Please identify a single "pro-hetero" or "hetero-rights" organization that isn't considered to be hateful/homophobic/other nasty things. There clearly exists a double standard: wearing a "straight pride" t-shirt will get you expelled while a "gay pride" would be defended as free speech.
