    Yeah. Didn't think so.

A lot of you guys have iPhone envy that's just oozing from your orifices. Really, it's OK that you choose to use a phone that you can tinker the hell out of and futz around with all day. A lot of other people are just fine with a phone (iPhone) that they can actually use with very little effort. Even with 65 vulnerabilities.

Oh God, not THAT myth again. How can people seem to forget something that never happened???

I wonder who first re-wrote that tidbit of history. It was certainly a re-write, because the fact of the matter is that Apple had well over a BILLION dollars in cash when MS bought 150 Million in non-voting shares. The essential part of that deal was that MS would continue supplying Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, and development tools for the Macintosh, in exchange for Apple to drop its Look & Feel lawsuit against MS. MS was also hoping the deal would help keep the anti-trust headhunters at bay for a while. The money was just a little icing on the cake, and was certainly not needed to keep Apple going.

The people who believe the opposite are the people who see anti-Apple headlines and see no more. They seem to be the same ones who choose to help propagate the myth.

This situation is only going to get worse. And worse. And worse. I can see it coming. Eventually, when thousands upon thousands of people who depend on the Gulf for their livelihood are put out of business, who is going to pay? Exxon didn't pay (in full), so I expect BP won't be paying up either. Oh they'll pay some, and put up a good effort to clean up the mess, but the damage will become so widespread that most of their efforts will be in vain. And all those people who depend on the Gulf will be out of work and will essentially lose everything.

    Who Pays?

BP should pay. Even if it means the company goes out of business entirely. Sell off all their assets if necessary to pay the people who no longer can support themselves. Stockholders, you lose. You are in fact the owners of the company, and your company is responsible for the damages (federal 75 million liability cap be damned). Why should a Gulf worker lose everything and you keep on truckin with your BP stock?

I don't agree with that. Apple is still very much in the game with "knowledge workers" as you put it, seeing as how what "mom and dad" are using is an industrial strength Unix under the hood, in the case of their computers. For their phones, being intuitive, well built and easy to use is a plus for a knowledge worker (I'm still not too sure what that is). And just because it has a shiny paint job doesn't mean there is nothing substantial underneath. I consider myself a "nerd", being an embedded systems designer since way before the phrase was coined. And Apple makes stuff for ME. I don't have the time, nor the inclination to tweak & tinker. I desire Apple's wares for what they give me, and their advertising is simply telling the rest of the world what they've got. I'm not swayed by it since I usually already have my mind made up to buy or not buy the newest widget (or an upgrade) long before there is an ad for it.

What's best for me is something that does a few things very well rather than something that tries to do all things and does none very well. I'll pay a higher price for that too.

Actually, that's not the origin of the term. It came from meetings with engineers during a product's development cycle, where they would tell Jobs that such-n-such feature can't be done, and by the end of the meeting they would leave not only convinced that it can but chomping at the bit to get it done. That's where the term originated and it migrated to Jobs' ability to sell the company's products to you and me ... which I guess is more or less what he was doing to his engineers.
