  1. Hon Hai Quality Issues on Playstation 3 Soon Into Production · · Score: 1

I worked for Foxconn (a.k.a. Hon Hai) here in the states while they used their 'magic process' to manufacture PC's for one of the big PC maker's. As an Engineer its very hard to believe in a product that you see engineered with obvious flaws, built with obvious flaws, and then passed on to customers with obvious flaws. There's always some degree of this going on in any manufacturing environment. However, when these flaws go unchanged due to the wholly adopted philosophy of Quanity over Quality, such as Hon Hai uses, it is very frustrating.

I just hope that this type of manufacturing isn't passed on to the PS3 for Sony's sake and for consumer's sake (especially for the price they will be paying).

Good code *is* easy to read....for many. But what about someone who is new to a project or new to an implementation?

I don't agree with the practice, but we often had engineers coming in and spending 2-3 days or even a week before they would head back to work on whatever it was that they were working on. Mostly this occurred when people went on vacation or if they needed help, but good coding practices as well as good commenting practices were very helpful. Essential? Probably not, but it does take out any interpretation errors that might occur.

Most of us are still human, aren't we? ;)

I agree. When I first started my current job, I used my personal cell phone for work with the promise that I would be furnished a phone eventually. It wasn't costing me anything to do this. However, when the time came, my boss requested a company cell phone for me and that request was denied.

Easy solution: Quit using personal equipment for work. Its actually nice not being able to be reached 24/7. The other Engineers wish they could turn in their phones.

  10. Re:I Cancelled My Earthlink Account on Disconnecting · · Score: 2, Interesting

I applied for Earthlink DSL, got denied, and then started to get my credit card charged 49.95/month for it. Each month for 4 months I called and had the charge removed (each call being at least 60 minutes..thank god for speakerphone) until finally one nice lady decided that it might be a good idea to change my credit card # and exp date so that it couldn't charge my card anymore. Wrong answer. Sure enough, the next month the charge appeared and so I called my credit card company and had them contact earthlink...and finally after 6 months no more earthlink charges. That's spectacular considering I didn't even have Earthlink service in the first place.

  11. Anything's Possible but... on LED Lights: Friend or Foe? · · Score: 1

I have a friend that has a top security clearance working for a big company and he says he's not allowed to have a phone near his workstation because you could use the phone to pick up the frequencies that the monitor is giving off and reconstruct data from that. But at least that seems somewhat viable. Flashing LED's is pretty damn ridiculous, especially since this article is being published in the ACM.
