So I will generally take the last sunday menu and edit it for the current sundays items. while i could do the layout from scratch removing the images and putting them back it would just be extra work and take longer. Since i've found options to lock the images from moving or resizing its become easier with fewer accidents.

I guess what i am looking for is a lock on certain page elements, the images are purely decoration.
being able to lock elements and essentially ignore them would be a great help even text blocks would be handy to lock so i can focus on the task in hand be it titles menu sections page backgrounds and borders.

maybe even an option to composite pages say a page of images a page of text and then overlay the two pages or perhaps a two stage print out so there could be a little colour printed by an inkjet but the bulk of the page printed by laser. In the main i tend to do bulk printing by laser and one off jobs that need colour with my inkjet.

probably not the hardest features to add.

touchpad indicator seems to be quite good although it didn't start on startup for me that might just be a glitch

libre office does have a protect mode for images to lock them in place at the size you set. however if you are editing text over an image the image will get selected instead of say a line of text and pressing escape will take you to the beginning of the page of text.

Ideally i'd like a protected mode which allows the image to be ignored completely

You don't need to have a handicap to have problems with mouse interaction.

    case 1
your writing a reply in slashdot and you brush the trackpad as you are writing and suddenly the insertion point has moved and your now writing into an earlier sentence.

    case 2
your using openoffice or libre office and creating a document with both text and graphics. One of the trickiest has to be an image as a page border a second image as a water mark within the border and then text on top.

precisely locating the images where you want them is not easy with a mouse, but having done so its a real
bitch to work on the text without accidentally selecting the image and moving it.

it's practically impossible to select a line of text with the mouse once there is an image behind the text.

    case 3
combining images in the gimp isn't easy to make say 5 copies of the same image in to 1 column usually there is some horizontal or vertical misalignment you only see when printing.

These issues could be addressed within applications and the operating system.

first why not a hot key to turn the trackpad on and off, capslock might be an ideal candidate for this.

why not a keyboard combo which would allow you to move the pointer a pixel at a time. thus eliminating the judder which always makes moving things precisely such a balls.

finally couldn't we get a lock on different elements in a document.
so when I have my images in place i can then ignore them while i work on the text.

If these sorts of issues were addressed then there would be less of a problem for people with disabilities as well.

The on / off button for the trackpad would be a start.

While a mp3 or cd largely sounds the same and has little personality, a record is quite individual. A record can be a treasured and valued possession. You share a history with that piece of vinyl a lot of memories are tied up in a record collection. There is a weight in a good quality 60's recording, the vinyl got thinner as record companies saved money on cheaper pressings you can feel the difference. A record picks up scratches and dust even though you will try to minimise the damage handling by the edge carefully lowering the stylus rather than dropping it. You probably wouldn't let anyone else play or borrow your copy not being certain that the record would survive the experience. I'm not even getting into the artwork and information on the sleeves or the smell of an old record

I guess we still have the music we had back then with a sound which is as perfect as when we first acquired it.
and no longer do we need those heavy boxes of records that these days could be replaced by a thumb drive.
better more efficient but like books to ebooks there is a loss because much as a book is more than its pages a record is more than the songs engraved on its surface.

The article went through a lot of the changes, the colour coding of the icon states the little tweaks to the launch bar showing which applications are open and the number of windows. The global menu feature makes good use of the screen. looking at my desktop screen as I write this on lucid nearly an inch is wasted on window borders and task bars that I don't need, as my focus is writing this reply.

While unity is the default, It will also allow me the classic desktop mode I am using now. So it seems to me that it will do no harm to at least download the live 11.04 cd and give it a spin.

I wasn't intending to do that prior to reading the article and now i've been walked through the system I don't think it will be as frustrating as my previous experience with unity.

'Free Services' are all about delivering an audience. They are not really free, the costs are carried by the advertisers who gain customers who buy stuff from them and thus increase the revenues and profits of the company that advertises.

If you compare with advertising fliers getting 2,000 fliers printed might cost 13 cents a flier so $260 is invested in the fliers + the cost of delivering them maybe $50 or so to get them dropped in mail boxes. If you generate 50% profit on your sales (a bit optimistic maybe) then you need to sell $620 worth of kit to break even. If average sales are $30 per customer per visit then 25 sales will about cover the cost of advertising after that its increased profits. You need about 1.25% return to break even.

Compared to advertising with google its pretty expensive to get those sales. $310 would buy you the eyes of lets say 200,000 people and if 0.1% are interested that would be 200 new customers on an average spend of $30 making $6,000 gross sales and maybe $3,000 in increased profits if they only come to you once.

In reality each new person you introduce to your business will likely bring you much more than $15 profit as they are going to tell their friends and family.

The only problem with online advertising is it only hits a fraction of the potential market for your products. In my own area a good proportion of sales will come from people over the age of sixty who will not be online and seeing my ads, so to draw them fliers are a more appropriate advertising medium.

So now I hope you can see that free services are not built on a house of cards but have a very real cost and a genuine return for the advertisers that support them.

It is a bit tricky to keep ad costs low with google, but if you can keep bounce low then google will also keep the click cost down too. Linking to related sites will help with that, you need to ideally move your customers through your site and on to anywhere else but google.

well thats my take on it.

App2 is pretty much a clone of App1 and made by the same author no less. The end user has not pirated App1
he/she downloaded App2 which was offered for free.

Just where does piracy even enter into it? There are lots of apps which are ad supported and free and also a paid for version which is ad free. Why would the end user think that the free version of this particular app isn't legitimate?

Even directing the user of app2 to app1 isn't that suspicious after all many trial versions will nag you to buy the paid version. Normally on the first time you run the application and still haven't decided if its worth buying yet.

This authors business model appears to be very little different to the one used by the antivirus 2011 malware vendors who tell you your infected and attempt to get you to purchase a "full" version to make the problem go away.

Even the name isn't distinctive, its so generic that anyone might use it for a program for texting while walking.

So really it appears there is only one criminal here and that is the guy/ company that created both of these applications and he/they are liable to be sued in civil court and or prosecuted under computer crime legislation in criminal court.

In my country the cost of the texts are trivial but the damage to someones character is worth a good few thousand and it is very likely the author would be found guilty. (typically 14,000 compensation ten years ago)

The computer crime statutes here would also leave the author liable to a large fine or jail time.

I'm just not buying that, there are stupid users on every platform but they are not getting hit. You don't need to be great with computers to use Linux and there are a good number of people that are not good with computers using Linux these days. Often because they have had it installed as a dual boot option by the person that cleaned their last windows infection. I've personally been doing this for a few years and the results have been great. All it takes is getting them to use Linux for most of their net related activities and windows for their games. You can play flash based browser games on either so for the facebook crowd they can still play farmville and mafia wars and chat with facebook chat. Generally Linux runs faster on a given pc than a secured version of windows which gives a better user experience.

Even if windows gets reinfected they can still do most of what they want to do and bring their pc to me for cleaning at a convenient time for both of us.

Cleaning gets a lot easier when you can boot into Linux and do the scans and removal from there.
Avast actually do a free Linux version which can clean the windows partition, which these days will have had any av installed crippled by the malware.

I guess one advantage of android and the iphones are the introduction to the general public of alternative operating systems.

I know that this comes off as an antimicrosoft dig but with what is it 200 million pieces of malware and growing its well deserved isn't it? Theres good even great software that runs on windows and nowhere else and without microsoft we wouldn't have the cheap hardware we have today but in thirty years they have been unable to stem the flow of malware aimed at their software platforms.
