The free bit is only that they will not bill the end user.
    the encoding is not free
    the streaming is not free
and the decoding is absolutely not free.
The last one means any browser wishing to offer this functionality has to pay for it and unfortunatly it can't pass on the patent protection granted by paying for this so there is no way for firefox to offer this.

So really we should say no to h264 and hope google doesn't get creamed in its patent battles.

For several years Jeffrey Morris has been setting up email marketing businesses around the Leeds area and taking advantage of both employees and customers. Is it coincidence that he has changed the company name five times since the it all began...

The original techdirt story seems to have been about a peer to peer email scheme meant to protect you from spam but the company next door so to speak are a spam marketing company run by pretty much the same people. The history is a bit convoluted but essentially it seems Jeffrey Morris renames and restarts his companies on a regular basis some might say when they stink just a bit too much.
Its a wonderful thread spanning 6 years of jeff morris and his internet based "marketing" companies.

The thread has been spammed with biblical quotes and tom jones lyrics, i guess they are left in to avoid techdirt appearing to endorse the thread comments. occasionally there are testimonials by possible customers or employee's saying how wonderful jeffs email promotions company is others saying that his services under deliver and others that he rips off his staff too.

some noted posters include a nick griffin and Mr adolf hitler. Largely adding a little humour to the proceedings.

I believe one problem mr morris has with this thread is that if you google his current ventures then you find this thread with all the old names included. They just won't give him a break, seems that possible ex-employee's sometimes possible current (at the time) employees keep joining the dots which tends to lead potential customers to run away from mr morris's advances (well his companies any way).

you really have to be rational about this if 2 blocks is too near how far away should it be 10, 50, blocks away?
The real problem is that Americans are blaming other Americans for something they had nothing to do with. Who exactly is being terrorised here? If I was an American Muslim I really wouldn't choose to go that Mosque the chances of some "patriot" deciding to shoot me on my way to church or blowing the place up really would be quite unsettling.

However the concept of the Mosque is very powerful since it asks Americans to think and that is a good thing.

If you take a situation closer to home for me the division of people into Catholic or Protestant its easy to see that you shouldn't blame everyday Catholics and Protestants for the actions of militants.

dividing a community against itself is very powerful and destructive and this is something 9/11 achieved and its about time Americans began to heal that divide.

Terrorism doesn't do a great deal towards advancing political aims and probably achieves the opposite effect.

The personal tragedy is huge of course and surprisingly far reaching one of the students was related to someone killed by terrorism.

An obvious case where you can uncover an insight has to be the new mosque in new york. Gut reaction it is a bad idea. Considered reaction you are associating an innocent group of americans with a bunch of terrorists who killed 3,000 people. Thats not right they had nothing to do with 9/11. So why are people acting like they did and just who is being terrorised now?

To deny religious freedom to segregate certain groups of americans is wrong which is why the mosque should be allowed.

The idea of the mosque was to provide a place to heal the wounds of 9/11 and the first thing that needs to be recognised is that it wasn't american muslims that carried out 9/11.

Ok it's rather silly to try and get more out of say a 640 x 480 picture, if that is the resolution of the image.

Although years ago i used a hand scanner to scan a scratched photo initially the scan was black or white pixels and you could see patterns at that level and continue them into the scratched area's and restore the picture. Before the scanner software took the black and white pixels and converted to gray scale.

Ocr can work quite well figuring out what the scanned text is it has a limited number of possible letters and numbers plus generally these are grouped into words which helps produce a successful guess.

sometimes you can filter out dust and other noise which helps enhance the detail by removing the distractions.

Now lets examine 35mm film it can contain far more detail than you would normally see on a typical print. The information is in the image but it is too small to be seen at the resolution that is being viewed at. It is there and it was captured.

With digital photography modern camera's are capturing at 4000x3000 pixels and we can be viewing at 400x300 which makes each visible pixel an average of 10 x 10 around it. However zooming in will reveal detail which is normally lost. I have a projector which currently gives a 2.5 meter wide picture. connected to my netbook i can see detail that I wasn't aware of when I took the picture and I can zoom and pan about just like in blade runner.

Video capture is more limited since the resolution is down to 640*480 on my camera but digital movie cameras are capturing at 4000x3000 which will have a lot of information lost to the general public. Presumably the film studio can still view the tiny details. I can't since the information has been lost in the dvd or blueray copy.

The other trouble with digital is the camera generally compresses the images meaning the data which was captured has already been thrown out.

This is one good reason to keep shooting 35mm or larger film formats because there really can be details which can be enhanced. It's a little more expensive than digital per picture but its never been cheaper to shoot with an SLR. You don't have to buy prints and you can scan your own negatives or positives and bring out detail that you wouldn't have from a digital camera.

Worth considering getting your own darkroom equipment too. Hopefully there will be enough people to keep some of the film and paper companies producing because film is still better than digital when it comes to image quality.
