Isn't the prime purpose of slashdot to gather together interesting stories for its readers
If so i have no problem with roland because he must spend hours finding sites and pages of interest- time the majority of readers don't have. it is a useful service he provides for readers of slashdot.
on the otherhand submitters who primarily post for page rank and to pollute google thats a diservice to everyone.
a database of submitters and successes and fails would probably allow the editors the opportunity to sort positive contributers from negative. Some posters probably should be blacklisted if they are just manipulating slashdot for pagerank in google.
a user rating for the individual stories could be very useful in that it would actively involve the logged in readership and promote the posting of stories which interest the readers. if this is linked to the author and even editor it would be feedback that could be used to improve slashdot. more relevence more interesting stories and less dupes.
maybe you could use the polling mechanism you already have on individual stories.
finally i would like to compare slashdot and digg the big diffrence between the 2 sites are on slashdot i read the comments on digg i read the stories that take my interest
hmm I think there might be some merit in using a pda as a small server. for example I have a small website hosted on a linux box I made it as an unofficial resource for a course i was studying last year. now i think that if i could set it up on the pda it'd be 1)quiet 2)cheap to run 3)as it is battery backed It'd always be up when the power came back online. to be honest cpu power isn't such an issue for me i have a couple of xscale pda's that will run upto 520 Mhz native is 400Mhz but here i am writing this on a 400mhz laptop...
would this work from a pda or pda phone? with wireless built in I could see it working as a nifty little server. What could you put in one gig? If you could run apache on CE now that could be fun and quiet very quiet. actually ahem http://www.rainer-keuchel.de/software.html looks like you can
for those who didn't read the article. It appears MSN servers will block some words the example given is "download.php" I tested this and it appears to be true. sending download.php to a friend on MSN resulted in a message saying this message was not delivered.
now this means that each and every line of text sent over MSN is parsed for content.
it also means the msn server has a function built in to carry out a different action depending on what the parser found.
The implications are that there are other phrases which could be used to maybe target specific advertisements at an individual user or perhaps create an alert that someone should take a look at an individuals msn chatting history.
As a nonamerican I don't have any rights as far as this goes. in fact I probably agreed to have my conversations recorded in the EULA.
Is there anyway to avoid this happening I guess that the answer is no. but it might not be too hard to make it a lot more expensive to routinely monitor everything we say.
Just a comment on the shaving problem, The solution to this is in the type of razor you use. most modern razors use two or more blades with a small gap between them single blade razors also keep the same small gap. This design is prone to clogging if the whiskers are much more than 24 hours growth.
The solution is the old fashioned safty razor. This has a double edged blade the design of these razors uses a castleated edge with the blade sandwidged between two curved plates
you don't get the clogging effect inherent in modern razor design and blades last longer even with daily use. they are also extremely effective in removing a beard.
um I guess its just a matter of opinion, English Welsh Irish (ulster) and Scots all come under the heading British which one you identify with is definately a matter of individual opinion. I was born in England with welsh irish and scots ancestors. Am I English because I was born in England, British is the only way to express my heritage for me, perhaps even European. My Brother thou prefers English.
British is a nice neutral term, only liable to upset nationalists some of whom don't even realise they are not purely one thing or another.
I think the only case where calling someone British will offend is in the Republic of Ireland WHICH IS NOT part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Although some British People are ignorant enough to think Ireland is British.
In the uk the rating system is a little different we have 18 15 12 ratings.
Blockbuster basically carry main stream cinema releases an 18 certificate is not a problem... but never seen a porn movie in a blockbuster's store but then i haven't in a HMV or other mainstream outlet.
I think thou porn films get regulated to licienced sex shops.

Actually there are a few, sony ericson p910i i think is on ce the mda series of phones with t-mobile and the the xda series from o2, the m2000 from orange. they run wince as well. The HP iPAQ hw6500 Mobile Messenger , sprints i930 , samsung i730... see link below http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/default.msp x
generally it is very nice but the screens still 320 by 256 which makes remote desktop more awkward than it could be. http://www.fpsece.net/index.html playstation emulator for ce http://www.scummvm.org/downloads.php allows you to run things like flight of the amazon queen and beneath a steelsky on ce and as you mentioned there is java gaming as well.
The built in browser IE isn't great so opera may well be a welcome improvement. (id prefer a version of firefox thou)
Very little reason to make a phone CE? for microsoft there is if you use MSOffice and Outlook there is.
and of course there is GPS which can run while playing your mp3's and be your phone too.
finally can i recommend velcro i put the hook half in a suitable space on my dashboard and the other half on my phone battery pack.
you don't really want to leave your gps in the car its likely to get broken into for this alone. being your phone too means its with you.
I'd just like to see a better use of screen space.
one thing the amiga did nicely was having menu's appear at the top of the screen when you needed them. not taking up screen space when you don't.
right now I am writing this in a box about 2/3rds max of my screen width and maybe 25% of the height why?
how about this for an idea slide out panels from all sides. use a middle mouse button to control them. move to the top click panel drops into place select whats needed click again panel gets out of the way. simple isn't it. (and not as annoying as windows pop up task bar) all the time the user gets the maximum use out of thier screen. oh and for those of us without a mouse how about using the FKeys for something useful I would suggest that 6 of them might be used or more maybe. left right top bottom hidable panels one for the main window and one for click to activate and hold click to release.
I know this concept might break existing programs some even use the F keys already so perhaps something to qualify the mode. maybe even telescope side panels or rotate panels to a depth of 3 or 4 maximum
heres another idea zoomable widgets how about widgets that can double in size when required. (this inspired by the tiny track forward and back buttons in media player on a pda terrible to use without a stylus)
ok there's a few idea's lets discuss add some more and see what does make a better desktop.
"Also a quick point; to those people who have hands-free headsets. It does not help if you do not wear them, then fumble to put on the sodding thing when a call comes in!"
The problem with headsets is 99% of the time your not going to be using them
I have found an alternative which works fairly well for me
I have a pda phone (MdaIII) this can be working as sat nav or just playing music. in car it attaches to the dash with a velcro pad.
because it has a 2.5 socket i have a small converter cable which gives me 3.5 socket for stereo and replicates the 2.5 socket. the 3.5 runs to a small transmitter (a cassette adapter works too but isnt as good sound wise) into the 2.5 socket i just put in the standard headset. If a call comes in it automatically cuts the music and the callers voice comes over the speakers and they hear me from the headset mike.
handsfree and ready because i am already using it.
I do have the alternative a bluetooth headset but to be honest it gets very little use.
Is something like norton ghost a workable remedy when infected by a sony root kit or similar?
Is it possible to set up a windows system so a simple restore of a ghost image will put your system back how you intended it to be.
or has microsofts obsession with the C: drive left it impractacal to have data away from the programs that use it.
There's plenty of microsoft fans read slashdot some even claiming to be qualified so I would be glad to learn how to set up a system where its possible to run a restore without losing data? I think i could be disiplined enough to make a new image when software requires updating or installing.
I don't begin to understand how "Climate change" comes about or how the mechanisms work or if in fact it is steerable.
can we alter our environment? yes appears to be the answer every land area which isn't subject to extremes of cold or heat or dryness seems to have been modified by man. from farming to industrial plants, we seem to have modified the planet whereever we live and that mostly is everywhere. I am not judging the implications of these changes just stating the obvious. Can we alter global forces, with our small contributions?
Well if you think of a car a tiny amount of input from us to the steering wheel will alter its direction. The vast forces within the car are controlled by our small input. we don't really put much in do we, but its undeniable the small contribution of the driver is magnified.
Look at where we are people, in a near perfect orbit of the sun closer its too hot further away its too cold. we have an abundance of water and near perfect conditions for life. We are lottery winners! It's a fluke.
The Earth is a dynamic system a lot of interactions going on we don't comprehend well enough. So far we have been lucky the balance of forces has been in our favour making this planet habitable. nobodys at the controls steering.
I would suggest that man has been fairly ineffectual for most of our species existance. mostly we have worked alongside the natural balance and have been lucky (less of us too).
it's only in the last couple of 100 years we have harnessed energy from our environment and put it too work and made it portable.
we are now big energy consumers and the rest of the world wants to be too.
I think we are influencing the direction of the balance of forces on this planet. just like the movement of your little finger on the steering wheel of a car will change the direction of a car.
However I think that at present we are driving the car blindfolded- we don't know what the results will be.
I don't think arguing that we control this tiny % of the environmental forces so we don't have an affect is more than a comforter to a child , just makes us feel better.
The day after tomorrow is going to be outside our lifetimes (hopefully) so its not really our problem?
The balance of the worlds forces has made this planet habitable so if we minimise our influence we should be ok it hasn't crashed yet (or has it maybe thats why the dinosaurs went extinct). thats not a certainty either.
I think right now we are just about at a stage where investigation and modeling of the realworld is possible -certainly 50 years ago it wasn't and I think we might find answers within this century.
in the mean time can we upset the dynamic balance, its possible certainly. Should we actively be seeking to minimise our impact now and hope the natural balance keeps going till we know enough?
Heat exchangers seem to be very efficient. I have seen sites claiming over 100% efficiency that is the enegy moved to where its wanted is far greater than the energy to move it.
Seems like this could be a great way to have our energy and reduce our enviromental impact.
actually Npower in the uk has a system which gets you to enter your phone number tells you to hang up and a real person calls you back I think in about 30 minutes. suited me it was my mobile they called. I think it took about 2 minutes to get my call request in. nicest automated system i have ever used. I hate paying to wait but this was a good compromise.
Skype does give free calls to 0800 numbers and low rates to 0845 locall and other nongeographic calls. my mobile call plan stings me everytime i call one of these numbers saves using one of those public call boxes which double as a urinal it seems.
one or two companys do allow you to type to customer services on the net another valuble way of delivering customer services.
I was at a market today and there were maybe 20 or more stalls packed with ps2 xbox games, dvd's cd's full of mp3's. Dvd's generally go at £5 or 3 for £10. Quality seems to be quite high sleeve work tends to be reasonable.
The question I really have is how does it make any sense to be prosecuting kids and blackmailing parents for file sharing for free. When adults are making thousands every weekend selling the content. I would guess people prepared to fork cash over for a pirate copy might be legitamately counted as a lost sale...
just concidering the food industry here when you have a product like say chicken soup a factory might be producing chicken soup for 10 different brands. trust me it is not the same chicken soup. Each run for a particular brand uses its own mix of ingredients. Cheaper ingredients do make cheaper products.
All produce gets rated for quality the best goes in the veg section of your supermarket-Standards vary between supermarkets. In the UK the best quality available goes to Marks & Spencer.
The worst quality of all are ingredients for packet soup baby food is pretty low too-(its all mush and a baby knows no better and can't really complain).
As a general rule of thumb if a food has been processed your generally buying lower quality than if you buy fresh and if its pieces the smaller they are then the more likely the original was in poor shape.
unfortunately for me I have too much experience of food factorys.
Poland which did have high quality food, is now getting clobbered by companies like smithfield.
Before eating anything it might be worth thinking do I really want to eat that, you are what you eat and its your choice of products which govern what gets produced.
wtf is this turn britain into an open prison day theres people who get watched and they are called criminals and we have em in prison now it seems like the whole island will be an open prison. we will be given freedoms to an extent but we will be checked.
Didn't we used to pity the soviet russians with thier limited freedoms and having to get permission to travel now here we have random searches checks on our movements stored for two years just in case. If I was a fuckin criminal i could understand it but I'm not your not and we are being treated as if we were. So fuckin what if you've got nothin to hide you've got nothing to fear, so great whats that make us then trustee's ??
This countrys goin to crap, its bollocks and there's nowt to be done unless you want to become a criminal and take some action. and now I'm fucked i am inciting a terrorist act, bollocks.!!!
if those 1000's get the same milage as a truck per gallon you have a point. But realistically a 40 tonne truck does not get the same milage as a 1 tonne car. He isn't paying the same per mile and thats where your arguement falls down an extra $5 dollars a week might easily equate to a $150 dollars a week to him. if he is an owner driver that might tip the balance from modest living to loss.
Ever considered it might be concentrated diesil fumes that your breathing in in a bus station?
That black stuff you see up the side of buses isn't from cigerette smoke. I used to dispatch ride in london end of the day i was black from traffic fumes.
I can't say the running cost but my amd cpu powered tower in my bedroom has an air temp of 37 degrees inside the case I never heat the room! XP sp2 with the concurrent multiuser remote access hack means it's power gets shared around the house and even a 48 meg ram 170 mhz laptop runs quite swiftly when all it needs to do is run remote desktop.
basically its using the parts even macdonalds wouldnt use. organic matter rots produces gas that can be used as fuel. if you google around for biogas and sweden. The EU has targets for bio fuels of around 2% off hand (uk is hoping for 0.3%)and where this technology has been developed usage is around 6%
from what i caught of a tv article about this its possible to mix in bio fuel with your regular fossil fuel to a small percentage without adapting the engine(5%).
one problem that will have to be overcome is the new car buyers willingness to buy fuel guzzling transport.
I guess if you can afford the cost of a new car, you can afford the fuel to go in it. Plenty of us can't afford a new car and so get the fuel choices made by the folks with the money. in my experience GM seems better than Ford at making fast efficient engines your milage may vary.
how many funnys will there be after mentioning biogas on slashdot.
Thats very interesting So you can probably divide the worlds population into 4 catagorys. descended from
1)people never exposed to the 1918 strain 2)people exposed but didn't develop symptons 3)people who had symptons but survived 4)people decended from people who died from the desease.
has there been any studies done into the 1918 outbreak analysing the mortality within familys.
Maybe I am totally wrong here, but as a species (ignoring the south sea islanders) we are more flu resistant than the population that was around in 1918. As a new desease our grand parents great grand parents would have had no antibodys that could fight the 1918 flu. thier immune systems must have adapted fast enough to cope with this new threat. those that couldn't died.
is it likely then that this adaptability of thier immune systems will be something we have now?
basically roche have a demand for a drug that they can't meet, initially thier stance was to refuse to licience the drug they have changed thier position on friday http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4362864.stm
The 1918 flu pandemic killed more people than WW1. This apparently was a bird flu strain. probably we are all descended from people who survived the 1918 flu (my great grandmother had it and lived I am hoping I got the right genes from her).
overturning patents in times of national emergency legal in most countrys. When this birdflu reaches america for example would george overturn the patent? Should he?
So given that taiwan needs the drug now. That your not going to find a goverment on this planet willing to give up some of it's stockpile of the drug (as no country has enough anyway).
Violate away it is justifiable in fact if you look at the link to the taiwan story its not fu roche its were making it now, we need it now, and we will deal with the paperwork later.
Is it just me or does it seem rather creepy that roche is going to make record profits on the back of millions of people who are probably going to die in the next few years.

in the UK NPower has a program called juice
basically if you signup for this
All your electricity is generated by renewable energy sources.
Cost wise its exactly the same as non-renewable sources.
So if you want to be part of the solution choose a supplier that gives you this option.
The more people that sign up the more investment npower has to make to meet the demand simple really.

just concidering the food industry here when you have a product like say chicken soup a factory might be producing chicken soup for 10 different brands. trust me it is not the same chicken soup. Each run for a particular brand uses its own mix of ingredients. Cheaper ingredients do make cheaper products.

All produce gets rated for quality the best goes in the veg section of your supermarket-Standards vary between supermarkets. In the UK the best quality available goes to Marks & Spencer.
The worst quality of all are ingredients for packet soup
baby food is pretty low too-(its all mush and a baby knows no better and can't really complain).

Before eating anything it might be worth thinking do I really want to eat that, you are what you eat and its your choice of products which govern what gets produced.
wtf is this turn britain into an open prison day
theres people who get watched and they are called criminals and we have em in prison now it seems like the whole island will be an open prison. we will be given freedoms to an extent but we will be checked.
Didn't we used to pity the soviet russians with thier limited freedoms and having to get permission to travel
now here we have random searches checks on our movements stored for two years just in case.
I like that link in the parent, it seems komar are ready for us but will they survive :)

interesting technology being developed in sweden.

(first biogas train)
basically its using the parts even macdonalds wouldnt use.
organic matter rots produces gas that can be used as fuel.
if you google around for biogas and sweden.
Thats very interesting
So you can probably divide the worlds population into 4 catagorys.
descended from
1)people never exposed to the 1918 strain
2)people exposed but didn't develop symptons
3)people who had symptons but survived
4)people decended from people who died from the desease.
has there been any studies done into the 1918 outbreak
analysing the mortality within familys.
Break the patent or have millions die.

basically roche have a demand for a drug that they can't meet, initially thier stance was to refuse to licience the drug
they have changed thier position on friday

taiwan says its trying to get a licence but its main concern is public health.
"Once the virus gained the ability to pass easily between humans the results could be catastrophic.
Worldwide, experts predict anything between two million and 50 million deaths. "
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3422839.stm
How many countrys will behave as fairly to roche
