  1. Amtrak on In-Flight Web Access Coming Soon? · · Score: 1

I've been taking Amtrak recently instead of flying (going back and forth between Philadelphia and Washington DC). Lemme tell ya... its great! I've got more leg room than I would in first class (Important when you're 6'4"), and there is a 120v outlet on each row. I plug my laptop in, get a beer from the dining car, stretch out, and watch a dvd. Also, its usually not very crowed, so I often get a row to myself. Coupled with not having to deal with airport bullshit, I'm sold. Check out Amtrak the next time you travel.

I believe Tori Amos released the first single of the album "To Venus and Back" digitally before the acutal single was released on CD. You could buy the (I assume high quality) MP3 for two or three bucks. I don't know if it came with b-sides or not, though.
Yes, she released a few singles from TVAB before it was released. (Can't remember for the life of me which ones though). She also toured with Alannis Morrisette last summer. The tour was sponsored by mp3.com, who had mp3 broadcasts of a few shows.

  6. Take a tip from TMBG on The MP3 Troubles Continue · · Score: 4

After all the mess with Napster, mp3s, et alle, its good to see a band doing the Right Thing with mp3s. They Might Be Giants has a very 'geeky' and loyal fan base, but has trouble with record contracts. So, they get together with emusic.com, and say "We want to put out a mp3 only album". It sells wonderfully, even if its only a collection of bsides with a few new songs. A few months later, they add a mailing list, and people subscribe to get the latest TMBG news and here's the kicker: a FREE mp3 from the band with a short story behind that weeks selection. It may be a song from a live show that was particularly memorable, it may be a new song they're fooling around with, doesn't matter, the fans love it. Just last week, TMBG decided to put their upcoming EP on emusic.com. You pay $7.99, and get to download the 7 or so mp3s, and they then mail you the cd! Wow! Does it get any better? You've got fans that aren't mad at you, you get your music out, you make a couple bucks (probably more than you would if you had to deal with a record company), and people are generally happy! Whats so wrong with that?

Be has said on a number of occasions that they're shifting focus to the WebPad embedded device market, and I don't blame them. Having used BeOS in the past, I can see how a trimmed down version with a good browser would do a great job. By giving away their old operating system, they'll be able to attract developers, so they can have a better product for investors. Can't blame 'em one bit.

  11. Everything is fine here at U of P on What's Banned On Your Campus? · · Score: 1

As far as I know, everything is allowed here at University of Pennsylvania. I'm a bit concerned about all of these universities getting upset about the amount of bandwith that Napster and the like use. Do they not see that this is only the beginning of some very high traffic applications? At Penn, there is a lot of work being done with Internet 2 research, and applications that use ungodly amounts of bandwith. If these universities can't keep up with the increasing bandwith demands, how do they expect to keep there researchers? And if the researchers and professors go away, so will the students.

  21. Re:Why would I wait? on Quake 3 Arena goes Gold · · Score: 1

It should take no more than a few weeks. They're essentially telling the distributors and manufacturers to make the Windows version of Q3A -NOW- and the manufacturers will stop everything that they're doing to make it happen, since its an easy buck. It takes a bit longer to convince them to take a chance and press some linux cds. If you wait the extra time, it'll help get linux into the gaming market by showing the distributors that this is what people want.

Personally, if I hadn't preordered the game back in February, i'd gladly hold off, since my windows machine is in a state of disrepair right now anyway.
