I don't remember bring up oil companies, but since they came us, I'm pretty sure I remeber the fine for the Exxon Valdez spill being more that $155,000. Fines proportionate to wealth. It's not perfect, but that's the model.
You seem to miss the point that media giants are disproportionately wealthy and that $155,000 fine is absolutely nothing in the face of spending $2.7 million for 30 seconds of publicity.
Really, a hundred and a half K is enough to tell a reactor manager, "wow, a couple of those and we won't have a reactor to run".
Pepsi will spend that money at the drop of a hat. THAT is why the fines are disproportionate.
As I write this, the parent has a +3 "Informative Mod, when all he "informed" us of is his ignorance of the medium. Insightful I could see, if he broadened you horizons with his doubt, but "Informative?"
Perhaps you are not a comic geek. The Watchmen, by Alan Moore, set the standard that comic creators today are still trying to meet. It's praise throughouht the industry is universal.
Ok, for all the very smart, yet somewhat short sighted people...
If you do it all in one day, it's an "event" and people in general will more likely participate, where as with a simple "Call your congressman this month" statement, people will have all the good intention in the world, but laziness will tend to take over and people will simply "meant" to have called.
I'll take this one. Who cares about keeping the machine running? Take ethics out of law and you are left with "Might makes right". Now, I am a fairly giant man, with somewhat above average intellegence and martial skill. I'd do okay in this environment. At least 'till I got old. Things would be right or wrong simply because I, or others stronger and smarter than I, wish it. And who are you to question the very nature of it? We see this in the animal kingdom. It is perfectly natural and right.
Only... it's not. And we know it's not. Not for us. So we form societies who try to define right and wrong as bet we can so that the whole of us can prosper. This process is always in flux, and is never quite right, but it is the best we can do morally. I'm sure you could find someone about my size to show you how much he can take from you by force if you need the point driven home. I am thankful with all my heart that I am an ethical person, and I do not behave thus.
Well, since I have had philosophy 101, I will say again, law is morality legislated. I cannot force you to see it that way, but it is fairly simple to see. I understand that in these last few decades, it has become fashionable to dispense with morality, or at least to be morally neutral, but I find that in practice, this is no practical solution. As for mum, I said that all law is morality legislated, not that all morality is or should be law. Fire that back at your 101 teacher, and he may pass you on to 201. You did know there were classes after 101, right?
The law should codify only what is necessary for people to get along together in one world. Ethics should not be even brought up; they are irrelevant, except in the practical case.
This is nonsense. ALL law is ethics defined. We have an ethic against stealing, and a law against it. Now, you say that is only right and natural, but many Native American cultures had no sense of possesion, and therefore, NOTHING could be stolen. Our speed laws are morally derived from how fast you can go without being a danger to others "IN IDEAL CONDITIONS". Yes, this means you can rightfully get a ticket for doing 65 on the freeway in the fog, because you may not care for your life, but you are morally and legally required to not put others in danger. All law we have limits people from performing actions deemed hurtful to others which is ethics at it's very core. And I , for example COULD get a big stick and beat you till you saw it my way, but I am ethicly, and legally prevented from doing so, much to our benefit.
In conclusion in our society you, other than through participartion or lack there of, have no rights when it comes to what another has created. None. Fair use is a courtesty extended, nothing more. And while I like the idea of fair use, my only way to lobby for it is with what I choose to buy and not buy.
Tech TV's(R.I.P.) Digital Dig contest has people watch for codes and then enter them on the web.I'm sure a dozen more will pop up in the thread. Looks like they got their head up a small narrow space at the patent office.
1. Infrastructure should be kept off of the public internet. If it is not, there should be backups in place.
We (government, web developers, designers, early adopters, et. al.) built the "information superhighway", the "world wide web", the internet, and sold it to the general, non-technical masses with an almost religious fervor as a solution to almost everything. It's OUR fault it's the way it is. It is our responsibility to help protect them from our lack of foresight.
There are a lot of ways your ID can be swiped. Unless we go after all of those other methods with equal vigor, I suggest you simply keep an eye on your credit report. You seem to forget there is a remedy for most forms of id theft. If you are mugged, you call the police, and cancel your credit cards. If someone mugs your computer, and you are like me and keep very little outstanding debt, you may not know for a long time that someone is charging up a storm in your name. And we, the people who championed the internet boom the last 15 years, wrongly convinced the public that it was safe. We built net ready 686s for our grannies and taught them how to surf, and chat and shop on Ebay. What the hell does "granny" know about Anti-Virus? I tell my mom about it and she says she's been to the doctor already. What the hell does "granny" know about sight spoofing? My mom barely understands how a URL works. She's the type who still types urls into the search bar on her homepage. (BTW, my mom is a grandmother, but I can't seem to call her that)
Ever hand your credit card to a clerk at the store? These activities can all lead to theft and a blemish on your credit report.
You messed up here, because there is government oversight of this kind of theft, and you can bet the scammer ends up on the news. As for shred my trash and encrypt my email. I sure do. But I am irrelevant, because I know better. Millions of AOL subscribers don't. So, are you gonna tell them all? No? Maybe someone who has that kind of connectivity should. You want a hands off internet? I say too late. We should have counted the cost before we built.
What?!?!?!?!?! More like in the other, possibly millions of dollars down the toilet as the infrastructure of business in major countries crawls to a halt. Not to mention any compromised financial data, that I might not know about until I get turned down for some credit application. Hell yes! They ought to tell somebody.
You try again. How does this contradict my post at all? I mean really, did you READ it at all? I'm not even going to keep discussing it with you, because you saw the 2 words you wanted to see and missed MY whole point of veiw. Damn, talk about can't see the forest for the trees.
The geeks willing and able to do things the free and hard Linux way already have access to the tools they need to make everything work.
If Linux is going to be a real desktop alternative to Windows, there is going to have to be easy, "out of the box" entertainment solutions.
I'm a perfect example, I'm only about 10 to 30 percent the nerd you guys are. I finally got Plugger working... a little bit. I still can't see quicktime, PDF, or windows media files. And it took a month of tinkering in my spare time to get the DVD configured. That's a hobby OS folks, and it always will be at that rate. And I'm the guy in my circle who fixes all my friends Macs and PC!!! I'm about as nerdy as you can hope for in the general masses.
If you fundamentally hate what Turbo Linux is trying to do, just admit you LIKE the smaller "Geek" market share and be content. You still dominate the server world (like we dominate the Graphics world).
can anyone else guess why this project isn't opensource yet. Possibly because money talks more than common sense ?
It's simple, they are afraid the Geek Nation will skew the vote in favor of the Geek Vote and they don't know enough about this geek stuff to know the difference.
I see, and have read, and laughed at a lot of joke answers here. But I thought I'd seriously answer.

How's that?
Ok, I usually don't care how my posts are modded, but this is CRAP. 1st, even the poster of the article made a joke about off shoring. 2nd, if the modder had read a Superman comic or two in the last few years, he might know that Superman has renounced this particular claim in favor of a policy of international altruism that even as recent as LAST WEDNESDAY'S comic has him deeply introspective of WHAT is JUSTICE, to WHOM.I renounce your lable of Flamebait. I have never intentionally trolled ANY message board.
The post was a(n apprently poorly comunicated) social criticism on the modern US Uber Patriot, which I wrote with the intention of being modded "funny". Ok, I'm off my box now.
Ok, I was joking. As A HUGE Superman fan, I can assure you, he is quite international in his heroism. He even recently had a very UN-PATRIOTIC encounter with President Lex Luthor. Actually, I tend to find the re-imagining of heros interesting. Stan Lee's version of Superman a notable exception. I'm just curious, how prominent is the spider in Indian culture?
The very last brand I'd consider in digital music in the very last place I'd want to go and buy it. It makes sense, bundle a lousy music service with lousy customer service to make it a completely lousy experience.
Sorry, I guess that sounds like I am a troll or flame bait, but honestly, I have NEVER had a GOOD shopping experience at Best Buy. Even when I was just running in to get a cd, it was a conjested hassle. But my LAST time there took the cake. I had to wait 20 minutes to get an employee to sell me my Canon A75 there.
Some people will say I could have went somewhere else. Yeah, I could have. Maybe I should have. (sadly, my sole motivation for staying was an unusually lucky parking spot) But now for ALL of my purchases, I am inclined to drive the extra few blocks to Circuit City or The Good Guys. I never want to go there again. So yes, Best Buy made an impression on me.
If you want true portable methane power, find a way to harness the awesome effects of my award winning Split Pea Soup! A small hose could be ran from the "back end" of the methane converter to a meriad of electronic devices. My wife can vouch for the consistent power output.

No, that's the past. Flash players came first, but capacity was (and still is) an issue. Remember?

We need a new mod catagory. "Icky." Although on /. the debate is open as to if that's plus or minus 1.
