    It's relevant because we've evolved in the current climate. It may have been warmer millions of years ago but we didn't evolve to live in those climates.

    Yeah, maybe they should look way back 4 million years when there were no humans. That would be great. 120,000 years may not be a significant amount of time for the planet but it's a very considerable percentage of the time Homo Sapiens have spent on this rock.

    Oh yeah, if you give someone the bird in Japan then, well, you're giving them the bird. Might be good to check they don't have a lot of tattoos or are driving a car with black tinted windows first ;-)

    I teach in Japan and I've found some gestures to be the same whilst others are quite different. The OK sign in the west is often misinterpreted as it is similar to the the sign the Japanese use for money. When you call someone over to you or hail a cab you use your hand palm down and make a kind of gesture that looks like a western childs goodbye gesture. These are just a couple of examples.

    From the National geographic article on the squid.... The longest giant squid on record measured 59 feet (18 meters), including its two elongated tentacles.

    I think it is just because the ambient noise level tends to be lower during the night so you hear the trains more easily.
