Being a marketing exec in a Fortune 500 company makes you an authority on exactly what? How to push crap to kids with too much time on their hands? One of the problems with the web today is too much flash, zap, pop, sizzle, pizazz. I am an adult, I don't react to flashy crap and automatically switch my (admittedly somewhat limited) attention to something just because its flashy. In fact, I tend to ignore the flashy shit and examine more closely the more sedate, urbane, sophisticated adverts, because I think that adults (or at least marketing execs that have adult tendencies) put them together. Look at this link for an example of what I think a good, professional site looks like. I patronize these guys (its NOT my site!), and without flash, they manage to produce good service, have a reputable customer base, and put money in the bank. Guys like you are the reason spammers exist.
Its interesting that you would pick that example from history.. because there is more to it than just a standards difference. There was a whole industry devoted to the moving of goods from one guage cars to another.. and the creation of a standard guage track set caused riots and political upheaval because this class of men was put out of work by the standard track guage.
This is not unlike the current situation inwhich many IT jobs are going overseas (for whatever reason) leaving many persons here in US screaming about their jobs. The reasons for such job loss may differ, but the end result.. the constant change inherent in human society resulting in chaos and turmoil.. is not. Standards suck, but they are needed, look at the multiplicity of formats in the imaging sector, and then think about all the programmers who have made a living writing translators.
I see that the gnomes have a good, firm, grip on your soul... While anyone would like a large screen, you just cannot duplicate or approach the PC game experience on a console. "Demise of the PC game platform..."??? How can you even move your fingers to type those words (on your PC???) You cannot get the same level of control, quality of graphics and overall experience on any console.
"...more powerful than a PC..." More powerful than whose PC, what PCs? Today's PC's, Last month's PCs, more powerful than Alienware, or more powerful than the PC I game on? I defy XBOX or any other console manufacturer to put together a console "...more powerful..." (very subjective statement -- more powerful how?) than my present PC, and for less than or the same money I did it on -- and while your're at it, give me graphics of the same or better quality, and command & control options that are as good as or better than I now enjoy, and the ability to edit my own maps, mod my own weapons (or whatever) and in general play around with the program. You're breathing vaporware, Brother, high on the fumes of hype. Come back to us -- don't go into the light!
Quit harping the "How long will Apple last?" tune. That record played out years ago, and Apple still survives, thanks to its "dedicated (read:fanatic) core of users". Apple will never die.
Can you say I.P.-based pilots? "...192.168.0.123, you're a bit high and off slope..."
That's the purpose of college -- to learn to use your head. Geez

Real programmers know how to comment, they just choose not to.
