    IIRC, the GPL contains a clause which allows software to be linked with non-GPL packages if those packages are routinely supplied as part of the OS.

    Actually, the relevant clause in the GPL reads (emphasis mine):

    However, as a special exception, the source code distributed need not include anything that is normally distributed (in either source or binary form) with the major components (compiler, kernel, and so on) of the operating system on which the executable runs, unless that component itself accompanies the executable.

    So, in this case, both get_it and QT accompany eachother (distributed on the same CD), and therefore, this exception does not apply.

    I just can't live without swallowed apps in my Gnome and Window Maker docks. Will KDE ever get these?

    The current version KDE does have some basic support for them, but they do need to be the size of a panel-button. Don't know about KDE 2, though.

    I doubt it :) I pay AT&T $9.95 a month to get 5c/minute around the clock (they advertise $5.95 for 7c; you have to know about this one to ask for it).

    Hmm, I can call from .nl to anywhere in the US for around $0.07 a minute with no monthly fees, billing per second.

    Last time I tried (the evaluation versions of) JavaStudio and JavaWorkshop (about a year ago, if not longer), some hacking was involved in order to get them to work on Linux, even though the tools were entirely written in Java.

    No amount of programming methology...can replace good, solid comments. Comments lines are soooo understated in schools, but are sooo conforting in the real world.

    No amount of comments will help with poorly structured code with badly chosen variable and function names. Code should be written such that it needs very little comments (admittedly, this is a subjective matter).

    So if i had a big company and we needed to make some customizations to emacs for internal use, and never planned on releasing the customized version in binary format to anyone outside the company, we could keep the source secret?

    Indeed you are entitled to keep the source secret. In fact, RMS has been very negative about licenses which force you to distribute source changes even if you do not distribute binaries.

    Actually, you can't. The license of Yast, a core component of SuSE has this clause:

    Distribution of the YaST programme, its sources, whether amended or unamended in full or in part thereof, and the works derived thereof for a charge require the prior written consent of SuSE GmbH.

    You can't really say that E is ugly. E doesn't have one particular look. It's themable. Even if all the themes are ugly, that's not a complaint against E.

    The configuration language is ugly, IMHO.

    A year ago, it took me about half a day to get fvwm2 to look exactly how I wanted. A few months ago, it took me about half a day to get WindowMaker to look exactly how I wanted. I'm afraid it's going to take weeks to get E to look the way I want it to.
