ack. i just read the replies to your comment and they all sound a bit like someone from the phone company explaining that is it wrong that all other phone companies track your calls but when her company is doing this it is something totally different and totally reasonable.

Can please someone explain me in clear and sound terms the recurrent FSF bashing ?

i can. stallman had some great ideas and wrote some k3wl essays, but time has changed. stallman became annoying. in his eyes, the only way to release software is GPL. while speaking all the day about freedom, he likes to enforce everyone to use the gpl. go to gnu.org and read some things like "why you shouldn't use the lgpl" and the like (don't get me wrong, i like the gpl-idea, but i also like the freedom to choose the license by myself).

the second reason is: whatever goes on in the it-world, the fsf (or stallman, most people think they are the same) must bash it. remember the "java trap" rant?

fsf bashing happens because fsf starts behaving like a lobby or a commercial organisation. trying to establish only one way of thinking as the right one and all that stuff. read some fsf papers about "linux is not gnu, but gnu/linux is".

ps:don't get me wrong again, i like the fsf, they just have a horrible pr.

this simply is wrong. main is a static method of a class just as the main function in c is a function in a file. and static means this class does not need to be instantiated (that would produce an object) in order to execute the main method.

All Java offers is a cross platform unstable graphics suite, and a set of annoying libraries, and bad object oriented design

come on. this is just the usual fud. both awt and swing are stable. and the oo design of java is a very sophisticated one (to inherit from multiple classes is a real mess, better implement multiple interfaces and delegate for instance). and calling the core libraries "annoying" is just your opinion.

btw, i do not really see why so many people complain about swing performance. using 1.4.2, it runs as smooth as a native app on an amd 630mhz pc. the only bad thing is the jfileselector which no one should use, take the native awt dialog.

  9. not the right way on XPde 0.5 - A Linux Desktop for Windows Users · · Score: 1

there's a difference 'tween linux users and windows users (for now): the linux user knows that the gui/window manager/whatever is just an interface, the windows user thinks all the windows and widgets are the operating system. an older windows user, someone who remembers that it took a command from the dos command line to start win3.1 may also know.

my point is: the gui (how it is) way is not the right way to move people from ms to linux. the power of linux is the kernel, the sockets and the huge base of free software available. and the freedom of choice, which includes the choice for your favourite window manager. this is something average windows users don't even know about: the gui is just a graphical layer in front of your os. this is something that makes linux and other unices extremly powerful from my pov.

the only way to move people to linux is to make them understand the real power of this operating system, not to make linux mimick the windows surface.

but i think about this like linus does: why should we take effort in moving people from windows to linux? there is no war, choose what you want, and if it's winxp, fine. not my prob.

in my opinion there is such a low number of people getting sued because the ifpi is not able/ has not the technology (be honest, they are not able) to find more people with 4 gigs of shared data. and the methods they use have not been tested yet by any european court[1].

and the other side did just start their engines yet while the ifpi is running out of fuel. this is literally just the beginning.

    no need to get nervous.

[1] for example, in germany they first report an offence to the police by knowing that this criminal procedure will be appointed (therfor they had to aver every single download for every single shared file, which they can't) in order to get the ip address of their "target" (the providers must only reveal the ip address of a customer in connexion with a criminal procedure) so they can sue her at the civil court. one out of 68 defenders will argue like this or even better.
