At my old job (a 12 person IT consulting firm) we closed down the entire shop in order to donate all our time to fixing up a local non-profits computer network.
Perhaps a phone call to your favorite local charity group to see if they have any computer issues that could use some fixing.

Hell no, wasn't news on Digg either. People have been doing this mod for years.
It all boils down to marketing.
Vendors require them to sell their products, without them you can't be a "certified reseller" or some such.
Employers pick the "lucky" ones to get certified in order to be resellers for the vendors.
Without certifications, the resellers can't be resellers, and there goes their market.
