Hoberman's dream of the hoberman sphere plaything is some thing far more intersting than the expandagon sets he has right now.
The idea is that the toy in it's compacted shape would be a playset for something along the lines of GI-Joes or something like that. The playset could then be expanded into a large fort that is very similar to the playset that the child could play in himself.
Actually, he's not. The idea of not releasing the code was in order to protect the reputation of Corel as a company that puts out quality code. They didn't want the flawed corel specific code from getting out into the public and being used and credited by other programs. They would be known for releasing buggy code. although that doesn't mean much in the open source community, we already know that corel is not an expert in open source. The good thing is that they're trying and embracing open source.

Unfortunatly 1984 cannot amongst the books that have incorrect dates since 1984 wasn't meant as a prediction. The novel 1984 was actually a social commentary on the present time (Post-war Europe) and was originally going to be titled 1948 (the year Orwell wrote the book) but the publisher had him change it because it was felt that 1948 would not go over well with the story
since I have what borders on obsession with this movie I have read the entire series of books and many of the other books associated with the movie. From this I learned that yes HAL is a play on IBM, since IBM did all the pre-production scientific work (since 2001 was the most scientifically resarched movie of all time) on how one would create an AI computer, but then did not want to continue the work or be credited because HAL eventually kills all those people, kubrick was not happy with this and so tried to get the one up by going one letter before. Arthur C. Clark, whose short story the sentinel(?) was the inspiration and was the co-creator of this movie, addressed this in the novel (written before the movie but not published because kubrick was slow to aprove). It seems he did not agree with Kubrick and so put the definition of the acronym in the book as Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer. As you can see since this is not a very good acronym showing that the name HAL was not originally based onthose words. In fact his original name was supposed to be Socrates (Taken from Lost Worlds of 2001, 1971)
Yeah sure the gag on office is funny, but I'm more amazed that the skill that was involved with the etche-Sketch. He was actually able to WRITE budget. and all I could draw was stairs.

Canada? Hitchhikers?
I'm sorry, but Canada is not a hitchhiker. Canada is a major contributor to the space program. In fact with all that Canada has done it should be considered the joint space program.
Intersting how much comes out of a country with a population of 28 million compared to one with 250 million. Maybe it's all those extra `u's
I believe all you americans forgot about the canadian contribution to "your" space program. Canada worked hand in hand with NASA on past and present projects. That and the fact that many of the engineers on the initial space projects were Ex-Avro engineers who were out of work after the Arrow fiasco. Althoguh Canada doesn't send up it's own rockets with astronauts, we do train our own.
It's easy to figure out the pronounciation. Linus in Finnish is Li-noos so Linux is pronounced Li-noox....in finnish. In english Linus is pronounced Ly-nus, thus in english Linux would be Ly-nux. So in the end it's wheather you want original or translated.
The author who wrote Robinson Crusoe also wrote Gulliver's travels, which was a play on the word Gullible, since most people believed that his stories were true. Robinson Crusoe was one of these stories since travel journal stories were popular at the time. Keeping this in mind I have to wonder if this is just another rumor being passed off as truth.
Female geeks tough to find because they are to much like male geeks is right.
From my experience the trouble is that you have to know the female first, such as a classmate or something or other. because I spend so much time in front of my monitors when I do venture out into natural light I find that my topics of conversation often veer towards those that are of interest online. often from this I get strange looks from everyone except those that I know personally and also spend most of their times in the cathode ray glow. Those friends I made a school maintaing it's network. It all boils down to the ratio of male geeks to female. When we enter real life they just aren't common enough for us (or rather me) to even just score (keep in mind that this is from personal experience if you're luckier, I envy you). Standard women just can't understand why someone would spend 12 hours a night staring at text scrolling up a window.
Voyager is the worst ST show in existance. My diagnosis is that their writers can't write a good plot driven show and thus resort to using tech stuff to advance the plot making many blunders in the process and ending up oh so lame
Anyone who has seen voyager knows that the current Star Trek idea is over. Insurection sucked and so does voyager. They should've ran with that idea of doing a show about Captain Sulu and the U.S.S excelsior. The old series never went bad
The only movie I can think of in which a hacker/cracker portrayal would be amazing would be a movie based in the future (ie. a Neuromancer movie) because whatever is around right now seems boring because it's mundane and normal. however if you made a movie about the modern programmer in, say the 30's, then they would seem amazing (using typewriters to crack governmant security).
Closest the ever came to portraying the true nature of a programmer was in the matrix. Asleep at the keyboard, works in a cubicle and answers to an executive who doesn't know jack. But you notice the movie hardly focuses on that. Just think about a movie about a person staring at a screen for hours on end. Doesn't matter what's on it, they won't be interested
With a genre that deals with the "online" culture and the world that has evolved with cyberspace, I would think that perhaps the genre would evolve as fast as the cuture it represents. In the past 15 years a lot has changed in the world, a lot has matured. As Person said, Cyberpunk was everything changes. Well what do you do when you change too?
As for the Matrix, it came out when it could come out. Excluding the special effects, it came out when the majority of the movie going public could understand the ramifications of the movie's message. Society is a little slow in it's uptake of the various aspects of it's sub-cultures. Now Cyberpunk movies can be profitable, which is what hollywood is really all about. They tell the stories, but only if they can make a profit.

Pretty neat, but still far off
