There's a difference between being in radio and being the actual musical talent. Mainly radio hates can-con because it imposes restrictions on what it can play, that being the most popular music, which brings in the advertizers. True independant and campus radio stations are quite good at filtering out the crap from the good, their audience isn't large enough to make a major impact. Basically Can-con is good because it allows the bands to get paid. BNL American success may have been from alot of US touring, however I think the cash they got from their earlier Canadian popularity certainly helped.
However the greatest example of Can-con would have to be Muchmusic. Without Can-con I think Much would have gone the way of MTV becoming overly produced crap that caters to the recording industry then the breath of fresh air it is.
For all the trouble Can-con causes I think it's better then the alternative.
I'm sorry but without the CRTC's regulations on Canadian content on Radio and TV Canada would have almost no entertainment industry. That fact is proven with the movie industry, as Canada has no major movie studios. The only movies to come completely out of canada are low budject indie flicks, that may have alot of talent but that won't keep their makers from going south of the border. It's the reason Jack Valenti was considered evil LONG before DeCSS and Napster.
Without Can-con there would be no Barenaked Ladies, No Celine Dion, No Bryan Adams, in fact there would be no uniquely Canadian bands out there as they would all go to the US to "Make it".
Don't say something is wrong unless you know the reasoning behind it.

If the author can get some sound finacial backing, this could very well do what everyone predicted Java would do. Which is making the choice of software by Operating system, all but over.
But even further is that when software is released it's available for all platforms, not just one.
Java was supposed to do that, and it could have, but for the various reasons it didn't.
This project has it where Java doesn't, it's not a new language, it's pure C/C++, which means it has a much better chance of being accepted and used, but only if they get the backing.
I hope they do. It could start a trend with all the other languages we know and love having a Internet sibling
I disagree, I would put more as: Faith is Faith stay out of it. The trouble with many people is that they think they have a right to dictate how people should view and express their faith. Sawyer expressed how he believes in God in his own way.
Or rather the better thing to do is to ask "Why should we leave science out of faith?" More is learned through debate than blindly following what someone tells you. Socrates, The Buddha and Jesus all followed this philosophy.
I find it amazing how Katz can spin almost anything into his alientated Geek gestalt. So now corporations are going to use genetic engineering to eridacate geeks? Lovely. Actually Katz is right on with this one. The hardest thing for parents is to see their child struggle. And so partents will use anything to make life easier for their children. They remember the troubles of teenage life and they remember the plight of the geeks they were or knew as teenagers and so they'll try to keep that hardship from thier children. Somehow I doubt a culture that still idolizes Einstein (one of the more unique individuals of this century) is going to put all of its faith in human control and homogenization of all aspects of reproduction. But how many other people are idolized like Einstien? How many people identify with Stephen Hawking like Eintien? Other than the basic equation for the theory of reletivity, how many people can say they know what Einstien did? Americans idolize sports "heroes" far more than academic ones. I would go so far as to say that a great deal of Americans would say they think Einstien invented the atomic bomb, having no real idea what his involvement in the project really was.
Americans love what they're told to love. THis can be seen in the Box Office of any summer blockbuster.

Lucas shouldn't be directing, he's a great technical director but he can't cut it at the artistic.
The reason The Empire Strikes Back was so good was because he wasn't directing it. The movie was not the glossy, fairy tale movie that A New Hope was. Same with Return of the Jedi. These movies were ruined with the Special Editions, mainly because Lucas was NOT the director and then he came in and put his spin on it.
The pod racing scene was amazing, as were all the fight scenes. But any scene that involved people talking were lousy. Lucas should leave the directing of Star Wars to someone else and go back to directing projects that he can do a good job on like THX-1138.
Falling Down was successful only because the movie was done so well and that bend nobility of Micheal Douglas' character was thrown in your face along with the nobility of Robert Duval's character. Both of them were heroes only Douglas was on the wrong track. You are right in that the US is sensitive about it's failures. As a Canadian I find that Americans must come out on top in every situation. For instance the war of 1812. The US in fact did not win this war dispite how much the US tries to show the outcome in a different light, the greatest battle of the war, the battle of new orleans was fought after the war ended and the treaty signed.
The Gulf war is portrayed as a great military achievement when in fact it was nothing more than a police action.
The only major US failure that is shown in the correct light is that of Vietnam, perhaps because there was no way to spin that war as heroic.
It's unfortunate that the US portrays it's history in such a way as it is the entertainment capital of the world and it's views tend to be broadcast all over the world.
I thought about switching to AbiWord, however I found no mention of compatibility with the wordperfect file format on the website. Will it (or has it and it hasn't been mention) be implemented in the future?

What really bugs me about this movie it that Tim Robbins death was done so stupidly. With the detailed view of what happens when you're spun until your body rips apart, why were'nt we given an acurate representation of what would have happened in a vacuum.
He should have turned beet red, after about 10-20 seconds begin bleeding from the mouth, nose, eyes, ears, etc.. then there would have been a reather large ripping of flesh as any air in his lungs would have ripped out of his body and then after about a minute and a half of depressurization, he dies. A slow, agonizing and rather grusome death.
