Duh. It's wireless power.
But seriously... think Matrix. I mean, why else do you farm Yaks? Just so you can go to cocktail parties and say "Yeah, I'm a yak farmer"?
Our local university is hardly a hotbed of activism (being quite young and still small), so it's probably just the quality of product at work, but that's one thing everyone there gets right. There are two primary sources of coffee on campus (told you it was small): Starbucks, and Tim Hortons. I see huge lineups in the morning at one place, and piles of their cups overflowing from garbage cans in the evening - and it isn't Starbucks.
Aside: Okay, so Timmy's is a big chain too. And I'm not so fond of them now that they've forced all the local outlets to ship in frozen donuts from a central factory (the difference between that and making them on-site is definitely noticeable). But still - lesser of two evils and all that.
Even farther OT aside: Who the hell runs the Tim Hortons chain anyways? I can only imagine the thought process there.. "Okay, we're going to be facing pressure from Krispy Kreme's expansion now... how can we counter that? Hey, I know, let's make the donuts all gross and pasty!" F'ing brilliant.
I did a paper on the topic of general-purpose GPU programming for my parallel computing course just this last semester here, interestingly enough. I believe our research indicated that even a single PCI card was so badly throttled by the bus throughput that it was basically useless. AGP does a lot better taking data in, but it's still pretty costly sending data back to the CPU. I have a feeling your proposed setup will be a whole lot more feasible if/when PCI Express becomes mainstream.
You don't need a computer to do that. See the anecdote about a quarter of the way down the page entitled "They make the call." Apparently such a cron job will run on an actual pizza boy. Mind you, *BSD will run on a mechanical pencil, so it's not too much of a stretch from there.
About the d20 system....

I was going to construct an elaborate rebuttal, but I have to go out, so instead I'll just point you (and everyone else!) to ENWorld. Easily the best online community I've ever seen - if you want to go debate the finer points of d20 vs. other games, that's the place to do it. Anyone else here who's been out of the loop for a while and looking to get back into D&D, it's the perfect place to get up to speed on what's happened. Plus D&D/d20 is open source gaming, so it's the perfect game for all the Linux geeks around here.
Stress != struggling to survive. Many of those people may indeed be stressed. Many people in corporate america are stressed too. Stress is a product of the expectations of your surroundings. A high-up manager being constantly pressured from all sides to perform stands to lose his entire lifestyle if he slips for even a second, given the fast pace of today's business world. That kind of stress has a very real effect on one's body, ask a doctor.
Disclaimer: I study computers and physics and stuff, not psychology or medicine, and I am perhaps the most un-stressed person I or any of my friends know. I am utterly unqualified to speak on any of this.
When you say 'Chebyshev', are you referring to Tchebysheff? I feel the need to point this out because that name is all I remember from my statistics class.
Wow. I didn't know anyone here was old enough to make that joke.
Yeah, given the above post about how he heard it from Rush... I'm torn between claiming that any fan of Mike Oldfield and Rush is indeed that old, and admitting that I also enjoy both.
Eh, I've seen better.
while (1) fork();
Had someone pull that on me in the lab at school. He looks over and says "You doing anything important?" "Not really." "Want to see something cool?" Then he fires up ssh. Wee.
I don't think it would make very good spyware though, it has a tendency to bring everything to a screeching halt within 30 seconds or so.
Aye, that's why it's a nasty issue. On one hand, I recognize that someday, some prioritizing may be necessary. On the other hand, one of my best friends was born terribly premature.. I believe there were other issues involved too. I've seen pictures of his mother holding him in the palm of her hand. He wasn't supposed to live past the age of one year, but now he's 20 and perfectly healthy. Sometimes it's just impossible to tell, I guess.

The harshest part, of course, being "seeing 350 lb. people play DDR."
But seriously, folks. Go swimming. Look up your local Masters club. Best full-body, low-impact workout you can get (just watch those shoulders).

As many great men before me have done, I'm going to forego comment on this and allow Penny Arcade to speak for me.

Ah, back in the day... Then, of course, you have the really good stuff where a single is the whole album.
Ah, the crazy PS/1 DOS shell. I remember that... I think the other two quadrants were the tutorials and an early MS Works (go ASCII-art MDI).
