Sure, it's better than GNU/Linux, IMHO. Additionally, FreeBSD is a complete OS, not just a kernel.
If your preference is for structure and good engineering, you'll like FreeBSD. However, if you use hot glue and duct tape to fix everything, stick with Linux. This isn't a bash on GNU/Linux, since both work, but merely a quick idea of their "personality".
I'm glad someone else caught that. Goodwill != Market Capitalization, and any such comparison between the two between companies (X Goodwill to Y Market Cap) is meaningless.
"But besides that, maybe an ISP should by default block all but a few outbound ports unless the user requests them specifically..."
I certainly don't think ISP's should be the one's responsible for trying to secure the internet. IMHO, ISP's should not block any ports and should only provide connectivity services...all of them.
Where's Mr. Internet (Al Gore) when you need him? We need a law passed that requires anyone connecting to the internet is required to received a state license, and an international license if they wish to use internet outside of their own country. Additionally, I'll startup my own insurance company selling government mandated "internet insurance". And no, *collision* isn't covered!
Anyone found breaking the good Samaritan laws of the internet can be fined (except for speeding) and have their license revoked. BUI (blogging under the influence) is actually encourage to better increase the quality of most blogs.
Repeat violators will we forced to work the help desk for the worlds largest Microsoft-only enterprise.
Just a guess, but after RTFA, the include photo shows and Opteron CPU with populated memory banks and the DRC product's memory banks empty. Perhaps this is a hint?
I'd sure hope anyone subject to BSA audits would use Solaris or some other Vendor supported version of Linux (RedHat, Novell, etc.)! Keeping on topic, Microsoft software should not be accounted in as an asset but as a liability, especially in this industry.
SOX is just to far-reaching to try to save a buck by going the Redmond route...hire real professionals.
Poor conclusion. The high heat capacity allows for lots of heat transer, in either direction. Without enough information about the copper waterblock and radiator on the cooling end you cannot make an assuption that it will cool slower. Simply this all depends on the design performance.
VMware does make a good product, but by not making a generic UNIX host (Solaris 10, Apple, & Linux) I believe this limits their uptake. I'm not "downgrading" to Linux from Solaris to run VMware but would buy a copy today if I could run VMware on a Solaris host.
Fortunately, the innovations in Solaris such as Brandz (formerly "Project Janus"), may enable a Linux version of VMware to run anyway.
Who really wants to purchase VMware to run Solaris or Linux guests on a Windows host???
The exponential growth factor was pulled out of the air and was based on the probability of growth [human interest] of such a cool contest with live logs. Nothing more.
In effect, that would turn into a DDOS quite quickly once the logs grow and site traffic increases exponentially. Still, the idea would be cool to see...perhaps if hosted on one of Sun's 8-core Niagara chips instead of a Mac Mini.
A hybrid solution would be a summary of the logs and perhaps a popularity percentage and other "smart" metrics.
It may have once been an ugly step child, however, "Snapple" (as some have coined this idea) could make great in-roads into the corporate environment. Perhaps the Sun/Apple collaboration could allow terms that Apple serves the Home/Home Office users and Sun serves (and sells support contracts for) the large corporate users.
"actually, if this really happened it wouldn't suck. solaris 10 has quite a lot of good stuff in it (DTrace!!!)."
I totally concur that Solaris is fantastic but this idea doesn't, as you so elegantly phrased, "suck". Imagine all of the goodness of Solaris with a easy to use GUI for those that want/need it. Then again, [this is the part that doesn't "suck"] all of the CLI tools and Solaris specific features and advantages would remain intact! Very cool if you ask me.
Another cool thing. Users start with the GUI and are immediately productive and can learn or master the OS's full potential at a later time, IF they desire...not because it's necessary to do anything useful with the OS.

And just like the fast-food compliment, IE also leaves a bad taste in your mouth...

"...Servers running on java, anyone?"
Why not? This sounds perfectly complementary to me since most Sys Admins also run on java.
Make that >1 or >=2

Get your Solaris 10 PostgreSQL binaries here.
Perhaps there is still time for you all to attend the PostgreSQL High-Availability Webinar on March 23rd?
I just prefer the first "SCAM" definition name for short.
Call me crazy, but generally I would think that the best developers for any given platform also use the same platform for development?

With the obvious exclusion of Bill himself!

Be Safe! Sleep with a Marine. Semper Fi!
Yep, I even thought of this later after I finished my cup of coffee. It wouldn't be "real-time" but could be sufficiently close to be useful.
True, but would not the access from another box provide another potential breach point and statistically skew our security findings?

[throws gas on the fire]
This is because Apple is moving from Darwin to Solaris 10 x86 as its GUI code base!
Okay, okay, not stop spreading nasty rumors and get back to work!
This was my first computer.
