"Or management, who de-prioritized it as a "nobody will ever do that" feature."
So let me get this straight.
There you are coding the bulk importing tool for SQL server. You have written all this code to try and determine data types, matching the columns to commas, etc. You wrote the loop that iterates through the file. And then the manager came along and told you not to add any eception handling to the code inside the loop? I don't think so.
Instead I think you are stupid and lazy coder who decided not add any exception handling to the loop instead letting the exception bubble somewhere up the chain where it pops up as "overflow" instead of "unable to convert 05/05/206 into a date on line 129,456".
BTW here is a helpful hint for all SQL server DBAs. When you are trying to import very large CSV files import them first into postgres, that way if there is an error postgres will tell you exactly what line the error occured in and what field. You can then open up the file in emacs or vi and fix it (don't use notepad your windows will crash with a file that big).
"Of course there is... Unless all militaries are terrorists, in your opinion."
Wow. Nice argument there. Define terrorism such that the current military occupation of iraq does not fit it.
"The big and important difference is the intent"
Since intent can never really be known that means there is no difference at all. Furthermore there isn't a whole lot of difference between purposfully killing three thousand people and uncaringly killing 100,000 people. In fact I would say that being completely indefferent to killing a hundred thousand people is worse.
"Of course, they are wrong."
Well since you say so it must be right. I mean there is no sense in listening to anybody who has studied international law for decades when I can listen to some schmuck on/.
"But we are talking about one particular wrong thing -- terrorism. Don't change the subject."
Occupation is terrorism. Expecially when it follows an illegal, immoral, and cruel war.
"My theory is that it's not the software engineering that's the problem - it's marketing. "
I disagree. Having been subjected to innumerable vague and meaningless error messages from MS products I think the engineering staff is lazy or stupid or both. I am positive it was not the marketing dept that decided that "overlfow!" was a sufficient error message to throw at you when you were trying to import a 300,000 like file into a SQL server table. Other faves? "Multiple step error" and of course the ever favorite "there is no error message for this error".
Those were all the fault of engineers.

"why did this get modded Troll? He's right on."
There are a lot of republicans here. They tend to mod down anybody who disagrees with them. But yes every word was true. Bush has said on many occations that god told him to invade iraq.
I read an interesting article the other day about an xtian movement which basically believes that if you pray hard enough then you become an instrument of god and that everything you say or do is god acting through you. In other words you can never do wrong because it's actually god doing it and he is just using you as a tool. This why Bush one said "I trust the god speaks through me". Yes that's a real quote google it.
1) the difference between terrorism and war is merely dressing. There is no actual difference. 2) What is happening in iraq is not war. It's occupation. The war was over when saddam was captured and the stated reason (getting rid of tyrannical rules) was over. 3) no matter how you look at it the war is illegal. MOST of the brightest legal minds of our country and the world have come to that conclusion.
And beefore you say it. There is very little difference between purposfully targeting civillians and indiscrimately shooting knowing that innocent civillians will die.
Oh and one last thing. Torture, rape, and murder are wrong, even when they happen in "war".
Actually since the "war" was never formally declared and never sanctioned by the UN it's more like terrorism then war.

I don't think he was talking about the crusades. I think he was talking about the modern day occupation of jerusalem, and the numerous other holy sites for both shia and sunni in Iraq.
And really lets be honest here, GW said on more then one occation that god told him to invade iraq and that god speaks through him. A huge majority of the republicans who support this war support it because they believe that it's a part of biblical prophesy. There is a very large movement of evangelical xtians who believe that they have to help the jews occupy all the holy lands so that jesus can come, save them and kill the jews.
For the record I believe that all religious people are crazy and dangerous. Without exception. Any of them can crack at any time. Who knows what their god is going to tell them next.
Sorry that still doesn't make it funny. I tried to laugh, I really did but it just wasn't funny. I guess I don't think sentencing people to be repatedly raped is that funny.
This guy modded as being funny but it's sad. Every crime in america contains an adjuct sentence of repeated forcible rape and gang rape. Even for mild offences like check kiting, or smoking dope. Whatever your sentence is you have to add being raped several times a week to it.
That's what passes for law and order here. Being raped for all crimes no matter how minor.
"How is it anti-competetive? They're doing it so that people are more willing to try their product in a world where DRM has crippled the ability to take music you buy wherever you want. "
First of all their product is DRMed too so that doesn't make any difference.
It's anti competitive because they can leverage their monopoly profits and other companies can't.
"Now that the law forces companies to release the numbers at the subscribers will (with possible applicable early termination fees) the market is much MORE competetive. "
That's a bad analogy. That analogy is would work if the govt dictated that DRM must be transferable and that companies must provide tools to switch from one DRM to another.
"Now Microsoft is saying it will take the cost of giving consumers the choice, and you're calling it anti-competetive? "
Yes. The only reason they can do this is because they are charging monopoly level prices for windows and office.
"Good for the consumer! "
Why is it good for consumer for MS to switch them from one DRM to another? At best it's neutral for the consumer at worst it's bad for the consumer because MS has a worse history of screwing their customers then apple does.
"t's here to stay unless microsoft can make a much better product. What they're doing now is just levelling the playing field a lot quicker than they'd otherwise be able to."
They are doing this because they know they can't make a better product. If they did there would be no need.
"Personally I don't see how this will work. I can't imagine Apple being too keen on it."
It will work because that's how monopolies do business. MS knows they can't beat apple in this market so they will tap into their billions of dollars of monopoly profits and start dumping like they have dumped every other product except windows and office.
What's apple going to do about it? Sue? With this justice dept? That's a joke. This justice dept is never going to punish MS for anything. They have already been bought and paid for.
This is a winner for MS. They will leverage their monopoly and their monopoly profits and give away lots of music for free. They might even give away their player for free. They don't care about making money in the short term, they have lots of money from ripping off customers on windows and office.
MS should have been broken up exactly for this reason. We didn't break them up so now they get to do anti-competitive stuff like this anytime they want.
1) Ecma standards are worthless. Ecma exists specifically for the purposes of ratifying standards that have patent encumeberences. In other words standards that are not usable by open source. 2) MS does have patents on their file formats (and on XML in general). Unless they specifically state otherwise you should assume they will sue you.
"If you believe this, you have missed quite a bit of what really happens in American elections."
Show me a US presidential election where the older, uglier, less charismatic guy won. I dare you. I think it you who is misguided or at least overly idealistic. Look at the reality of what actually happens.
"These groups are largely non-partisan and usually try to work in their philosophies to both major American political parties."
Once again you show a stunning lack of realism. You really believe that the pro life movement is non partisan? If so I have a bridge to sell you.
"I find it hard to select candidates who represent my hodgepodge of values and opinions. "
In America things like values and opinions have very little to do with who gets elected. Things like intelligence and positions also don't really matter all that much either. The fact is that the US political races are simply popularity contests. Usually the younger, better looking, more vigorous guy wins.
"I often find that my "opponent" and I agree in basic principle, but are hung up on some minor detail or interpretation. "
It's those differences that are important. Is there really that much of a difference between a catholic and a protestant? Between a shia and a sunni? Of course not and yet they have fought each other for centuries. Little endian, big endian. It makes all the difference.
SO what. It's just a fucking corporation for god's sake. It's not like a human being or something and it's feelings are not going to get hurt. It's certainly not going to make any less money.
Honestly save your pity for someone who really needs it. Not a fucking corporation.
If you ever do need to bask in adulation of MS you can always go to gotdotnet.com. There you will find minions of MS dancing around Bill gates chanting "holy, holy, holy" 24/7 just like it says so in the bible.
"Who the hell are you to pass judgement on the study?"
A rational human being with the ability to read, write and come to conclusions.
"Do you have even the first cite to discredit the study other than you think it is wrong?"
You seem to be stuck on this treadmill. You don't need other studies to fault the methodology of studies.
Sorry I still don't buy it. It takes less then ten minutes to add a try catch block around a set of code.

Yes. America is a special place. You have no right to be anti american. you can be anti any other country but not anti american.
Also please wait till america is actually a fascist state before ciritizing it. There is no sense in critizing it during it's slide into facism.
