  1. Edited by... on Merck's Deleted Data · · Score: 1

Kinda off-topic, but this reminds me of the time I found a usb memory stick in one of the school clusters. I was able to identify the owner and return it to him because of the "edited by" info in some of the word documents inside it.

Well, it seems like at least one of the gazillion stupid features included in Word has a use after all.

  2. Lack of Interest? on Analysts Lower Publisher Projections · · Score: 2, Interesting

Maybe it's because nothing particularly astounding has come out as of late? I understand that the game industry is right now trying to concentrate on just getting the next-gen consoles out the door, but thats no excuse for the lack (well, more so than usual) of creative, interesting, and/or original games lately. You can't expect sales to increase just because its winter (well, you can, but not completely). There also has to be something that entices people to say "hmm.. I really want to get this for christmas", and considering how hard it is to get 360's right now, that would basically just be new games for the old consoles. But because of what I discussed above, there just isn't very much in the market worth buying right now. just my 2 centavos

Birds, insect, and lots of other animals exhibit the type of behavior that you're describing, and from what I understand their amount of self-awareness is quite limited at best. I completely agree that complex ai is a solution to the problems you're describing, but I disagree that self-awareness is a requirement to succesfully perform those tasks. just my 2 shillings...

  4. Why do we care? on Mozilla Firefox 1.5 RC3 Released · · Score: 5, Insightful

Not to be a troll or anything, but why does slashdot deam every minor release of Firefox to be worthy of a story? Its no different from any other OSS. And also, anyone who uses Firefox would notice and know what the little green upward-pointing arrow on the upper-right-hand corner means.

  8. Resolved Already? on Airport Screeners could see X-rated X-rays · · Score: 0

Wasn't this whole "privacy" of scans thing solved already a long time ago? I dont remember where, but I do recall reading about some technology in which the computer took the scan data and overlayed it ontop of a gender-neutral human model before displaying it to the security guards. I tryed a shallow google-search, but I couldnt turn up anything (mainly because I had no idea what to search for).

  9. Hardware or Software on Microsoft Sued Over TCP/IP offload technology · · Score: 0

I dont get it, these "smart NIC's" ability to take on all TCP/IP processing seem more like a hardware feature. So, basically, Microsoft is getting sued for providing support for a piece of hardware's features in their OS? Doesnt that seem a *little* strange?

  10. Re:Woot on Is Leasing Really Worth It? · · Score: 0

Argh, too late! Anywho, I've actually wondered this myself often. I've noticed I'm always coveting the latest and greatest laptops, but I dont get them because I already spent allot of money on the current one, and its still good (so, basically, I cant justify the purchase). However, if I were to lease, I can just change laptops after the lease is over. The thing is, I really dont know excatly what happens if I break it, through negligence or accident, or how much it would cost for that matter.

Can a client-side java applet spoof the referer field in an http request, dl the image, and display it? Or better yet, dl the webpage (out-of-sight), and embed the image in the rip-offer's webpage? Since the java applet would be cached by the browser, if a website were to use many deep-linked images, such an applet could lower bandwith for the rip-offer in comparison to serving the image themselves.
