Can't see what this is really about? People freak out at MS about any little thing - remember the whole Webdings thing? The letters NYC produced some symbols that seemed to suggest some wierd "disturbing" things. I mean, sure it was co-incidence, but they took a literal beating about it for a few weeks way back.

    Read your own words again.

Can you honestly not even hazard a guess as to why people reacte so strongly when msoft does something? They control without any intervention the operating system that powers 89% of the worlds computers. What other major system do you know in the world that is controlled by a single corporate entity... one that has no real controls placed on it by a goverment? If msoft decides a word doesn't exist, then it doesn't exist on every installation of Word. When Word becomes completely integrated into the OS then it won't exist on 89% of the world's computers. People get in such a hissy over msoft's practices because the people that should be (the goverment) isn't doing anything about it.

The goverment in the US regulates everything else that has such a strong impact on our economy, yet the sole super power in the computing world is basically untouchable.

Because as others have pointed out this is *too damn* far. This is what we need to get the general populace involved. You try telling finicky Americans that they no longer have any choices. Hell it doesn't matter if that is already true, but once you tell them that to their face things will change. Sometimes things have to go way too far before enough people will stand up to it. The general populace of any nation is much like a spring. You can push it in for a long time but only to a certain point... and after you get tired of pushing they are going to push back hard.

    Let this pass.

Then I will have no problems convincing friends or family why Microsoft/RIAA and their ilk are bad news in the long run. And then? Then I will be standing there with open arms to all those who want choice and won't take it anymore.

Does anyone here honestly think we will use GUIs in the same way 10 years from now?

I believe current GUIs (everyone of them) are horrible. They have poor interaction principles. They lack the fundamentals of task based interactions. They are overly complex when they don't need to be. They do not communicate well in abstract terms to the end user what they are really doing. Current GUIs are also heavily based on US culture.

No I don't have any grand ideas to fix it all other than I believe the GUI should be based on basic geometric shapes for actions. Much like most embedded devices have. And that if needed, somewhere easily accessible is a further level of complexity for those that demand it.

In the past when I interviewed I made the mistake of asking people too specific questions... while you may get the answers you are looking for that is definitely not a fair gauge of how good the person will be.

Situations are the best thing to ask about and not really things related to sysadmin. Ask them questions about cars, planes, boats, trees. Get them to show you they have a real base of problem solving skills. Most admins don't and can only parrot back things they have already learned. While they are useful for doing their jobs, it is these people that crack under the high pressure situations.

Also when I interview people I am overly candid about my views on the company, the people and my opinions on text editors and OSs. You need to see how people will reacte to opinions that don't mirror their own. Because a great deal of sysadmin work is dealing with problems created by people higher up who don't/won't understand the underlying technology.
