When you start almost all PocketPC apps that interact with files they drop you into a tree view or an open dialog. Perhaps you meant open it with a different program then the one registered to open it from the file explorer?

Syncing works well. I have file synced from my IPAQ to my desktop and to yahoo. Contacts/Appointments are also synced to my desktop, yahoo and to my ericcson t39 phone. What part "sucked ass"?

Also how is crappy GPS software the fault of the OS?

The PocketPC OS still has a ways to go to impress me, but as it stands it is a hell of a lot better than the Palm crap people are grasping onto. So far only two pocket OS's have been good, NewtonOS and Psion's.

Microsoft doesn't pay dividends on stock you own. Hence many critics complaints about their shifting of money to avoid paying any taxes at all. When you are buying msoft stock you are hoping it will be worth more in the future to sell. There is no revenue side for you as the investor other than this. Because of this msoft MUST continue to increase the dominance it has to push the stock price up and keep investors happy. The gist? msoft can't be a well behaved company and keep the stockholders happy.

Gates gets richer and richer by year at an incredibly rapid pace because of the particular "loophole" in taxes on stock.

Slashdot has been hitting new lows on a consistant basis for about 14 months. Sure there were foul-ups before but usually one of the editors would admit their mistake. Not really the case anymore.

But think of it like this. An article such as this, about a hot new technology that you can have for free drives a lot of traffic to the slashdot site. How so? It is a lot more than just the initial people who read the article. Many forward a link off to their friends via email or chat. These people hear it was "broke" on slashdot so when it doesn't work they go there and peruse all the messages looking for a solution.

Slashdot exists solely on AD revenue. Let's all not forget that if the impressions don't maintain a high enough level some positions will have to be eliminated from the slashdot staff. Because of this don't ever expect an editor to call out another for doing a shitty job. They all protect each other because its the only way to protect themselves.

However as a young guy you might not find it is the place for you. The city is not geared for younger people who are not of the "southern" lifestyle.

The living is cheap. There is a good abundance of decent food. Nice scenery and shopping abound. In short it would a great place to head in your early 30s with a starting family. Earlier than that? Try to risk NYC or SF. Then again SF is the deadest market I have ever seen so don't bother unless you are exceptional. If you must stay in the south head over to Atlanta or maybe even somewhere in NC. I don't know enough about the midwest to make a recommendation but I hear some parts of Coloraro are up and coming.

No, it's simple economics. The price point is set to a level the market is willing to pay.

Economics do not come into play in a market where all parties involved are guilty of collusion. For those that don't think this is the case explain why independant CDs sold at local records shops and at live concerts cost in the same ~15-20 range. The market is only willing to pay the price because they have no choice. This is not economics at work.

What the hell is wrong is supporting artists who make money off it? What kind of altruistic free love hippie world do you live in?

It just so happens a lot of damn fine musicians enjoy eating just as much as you and I. Your words are written as though you have never had any close friends who were struggling artists. It is fine to cry out for the merits of art for arts sake when you are an artist, but it is entirely a different matter to yell the same cries when you yourself have never been in their shoes.

Personally I have never purchased a CD where 90% of the music was crap. This is because I am picky and only buy from stores that let you sample the music extensively before hand or by purchasing from artists that have an extensive personal track record with me.

I appreciate independant bands and purchasing music directly from them. But as someone who loves music no matter the source I find your words quite confusing at best.

Do you actually listen to music? Do you own any music? Which advertising told you to purchase it? Word of mouth? Live concert? A song in a movie?

Oh wait you already said you willingly pay whatever the going rate is. So what does this make you? Are you not a supporter of the system? Are you not also part of the problem?

  15. Re:If they think "piracy" is OK... on Educating Youngsters About Piracy · · Score: 2

There is a difference between something you "accept" and something that is reasonable. In this case you pay $15 because its the only way to get what you want. The question you need to ask yourself is, if these same CDs cost $17, $20 or even $30 if you would pay the same.

The price point currently set is arbitrary. The RIAA is guilty of collusion.

I pay what I must for CDs because I have no choice to get the music that I want if my friends don't have it. We share collections thereby sharing the cost of music in an informal co-op. Do I think a CD is worth $15?

No. But if for every CD I purchase my friends purchase one and we share the music the cost is much more bearable.

I own and absolutely love many of the classics (North by Northwest and The Third Man fight in my mind for ultimate supremecy)... but those stories and characters were somewhat limited with what could be shown. Now directors/writers can make their dreams appear in vivid detail on the screen. It may be harder to find the gems because of all the refuse being made, but continually hanging on to the past directors as the "masters" is a disservice to story telling.

And for the record, Rushmore, is a brilliant piece of film making. Personally I rank it behing Memento for the best film of the past 5 years.

If you do it is quite easy to show how your costs are easily offset by the services that you provide internally. Apparently you have never done this or you would have already understand this concept.

Running an IT department isn't hard if you have a clue and a real work ethic. Anyone who says otherwise is more than likely in the wrong field or needs to seriously think about getting some professional training.

  25. How does an IT department suggest this? on Can Developers Work in a 'Locked-Down' Environment? · · Score: 2

2 ways that I have seen.

One. The department is woefully underskilled and incompetent for the jobs they need to perform. In an effort to try and head off as many problems as possible they lock things down to a minimal set of known circumstances.

Two. The department is horribly understaffed. They feel the only way they can keep up is by making sure there is little different from point to point.

I firmly believe in having a COE on every machine. But I also believe that a user can and should have the right to software they feel would enhance their work experience. As an IT guy would you really know if MATHCRUN2002 helps that user or not? Make sure all users run the idea by you first and let them install it. As long as they have the understanding that is isn't supported and if something on your machine can't be fixed quickly you will return the machine to the COE.

BTW the two reasons I listed at the top are a result of poor management. Usually you end up with fascist IT directors when they have no concept of how to really run a computing environment.
