I disagree. HR is a bunch of idiots and they do the "hiring" and background checks. Ostensibly, they have nothing to do with the "business" of a company. That is if you are not HR.

This is a serious problem with data integrity. Check out Choicepoint. They aggregate every piece of data they can with a person's identity. And they are not apologetic about it if they get it wrong. In other words, they are able to create a profile of you without any accountability and sell it as a trusted piece of information that you have no control over. This is similar to your credit report. These things are not regulated and can affect your life.

Otherwise, there is nothing you can do. Your employer will use a background service and it will not show a conviction of you being a sex offender. I would pay for a background check of yourself with the services your employers use so you can see what is being reported.

What is the source of this "power"?

Yes, it is still a fact of life. Since KY has no jurisdiction over domain names, then tough is the answer. You only can legislate over what you have control of like their borders. So, setup a firewall into KY if KY thinks it should censor speech. Think about what the supreme court ruled yesterday - internet porn filters to protect children are unconstitutional based on freedom of speech. Apparently, KY must be flush with money in their state budget to take on a luxury like fighting in court whether they have the prerogative to steal domain names. Because they will be sued and it may not be in their courts as it may come in federal court.

I think it is really funny that people believe they should go to war when they have no money. Principals are the luxury of those that can afford them. So, either pick cheap principals to have or become rich and fight for them.

Why would a state entity have a greater authority than any other political entity or individual? Who holds KY responsible for acting without a prerogative for this power? For instance, why don't the island nations hosting gambling companies grab all KY GOV domains just to be malicious? I would.

  8. Naive on Are My Ideas Being Stolen? If So, What Then? · · Score: 1

Here is your question: would you sponsor someone to develop something that they keep? If you are not the US government or someone giving money away, the answer is no. If your britches are big enough that you can fund yourself, then you can keep what you create. The school is under no obligation to share their resources with you and in return for access to professors, lab equipment, library, computer network, they want to keep what you create while using their resources.

One option is that you can go to another school if you like. Most of them probably have the same clause. Another option is to self-educate and then you are not depending upon an institution to "fund" your "ah-ha" moment.

I don't understand why people argue about contracts. Don't sign them if you don't agree with them. Don't sabotage your side of a contract if you decide a contract is not in your favor - you signed it. Best thing to do, if you have integrity, is to try and renegotiate the contract or break it and pay the consequences for early termination. Would you think things should be different if you were in the driver's seat of a contract?

The novel concept is that multiple people interact in a virtual world like MUDs or Quake. If String Theory proves to be accurate and reality is 11D, should I send in a new patent and then sue because I was the first to send in a patent that specified 11D? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/String_theory This is stupid.

People should should stop shopping there and let them fade into the internet as a relic of the early 2000s.

Since the economy is taking a big dumb, I am betting they are leveraged to the max like lots of other companies and it should be easy to tip them into bankruptcy - hopefully Chapter 7. How many people have gotten screwed by eBay because they are not accountable to those that buy goods in their marketplace? I can name several people that have been screwed by eBay, which is almost equal to as many people as have been touched by cancer in my life - 1 in 3. Universities, as entities of their communities, funded by the public, should be stewards and protectors of the public when this type of crap happens. Don't universities gather great amounts of intellect? If so, how come they couldn't see that the RIAA was abusing the US legal system and others around the world? What a bunch of cowards! It must be safer to wait and see instead of influence. WTF do we fund research in universities except to create new theories, modify old ones, and throw away those that are irrelevant. Isn't this referred to as progressive? I am curious as to what is encouraging them. This would have been, and still is, an excellent exercise for law departments and budding new lawyers.
