There are reasons why this bitrate and sampling frequency are used and it can be heard. It is not futile and it is not just big numbers for the sake of it. I speak as a technical director for an AV company and as man who built several home and project studios and was part of 3 major studios migration from analog to digital technologies. I once was a teacher and technical supervisor in a sound design school.
24bits: -you can and you WILL hear the difference with 16bits. It basically record finer amplitude variations than 16bits, therefore the dynamic range is increased and there is less approximation of values when the sound is digitized. the end result is that stereo spacialization is usually better as the right and left channel amplitude differences are closer to reality and very fine variation will lead to audible different result. Less quatization noise is heard (the low amplitude pop corn noise and "8bit feel" you get when listening to low amplitude digital recording) as lower amplitude values are represented with more bits and therefore are less coarse. More importantly any processing playing with amplitude is rendered much more accurately with finer detail. A digital compressor/limiter won't screw you stereo image, an expander won't bring more distortion to your mix by amplifying quantization noize for example. Echos and especially reverb will be MUCH finer and accurate, the tails won't cut off and won't sound like white noise.
192KHz: - this one is tricky as it has a lot of use in the studio but it can barely be heard even on the best systems. Basically pretty much all AD/DA system uses brickwall filters to filter frequencies above 20KHz, the limit of a very healthy ear, so as to prevent foldback frequencies. The higher the sampling frequency the softer the slope of that filter is because the foldback won't happen until 96KHz is reached compared to 22KHz on 44.1KHz. the brickwall filter at 44.1KHz is harsh and many people with good sound system were complaining (me included) that it could be heard and was annoying. At 192KHz it is softer, enough to not be a disturbance. On the other hand the most important reason and use for 192KHz is latency. When recording someone in the digital world you have to deal with the fact that as a certain number of samples will have to be created before what goes in, goes out, at 44.1KHz there was an audible, annoying delay, if audio was processed it was unlivable for most musician. at 192KHz this delay is essentially eliminated and only the most discerning musician will be annoyed by it. So in that sense 192KHz is not really needed for most people and indeed very few people have systems that will indeed let them hear the difference with 44.1KHz but it is there.
I guess we all like to believe there is a big evil industry in all domain that make us buy stuff we don't need, I like to believe my i5 750 is as good a an i7 960 for what I do but the reality is the i7 960 IS better and with the right application the difference means a lot. Same goes for cars, a 2001 Toyota echo will get me around but a more expensive cars will get me around in more comfort will less issues. Same goes for audio, most people using gaming headphone or 5.1 gaming audio setup and cheap all-in-one sound system will never ever hear the difference between 16bit 44.1KHz and 24bit 192KHz but it doesn't mean it is not there and it doesn't mean it is not significant and that it's a lie. It might not be a necessity but for professionals like me (as in "it is how a make a living" not as in "I am an expert, listen to me") it is significant. For audiophile it is significant also and for people who listen to music all day (ear fatigue will come in much later with 24bit 192KHz than with 16bits 44.1KHz).
That is what I do, taking a flight path, pressing the autorun button are ways I have to take a break, go empty the diswasher, grab a snack, go read something online, mandatory cuddle time with my GF (she plays too) during a play session, remove that and will be a endless gring more akin to work than play.
Because they are abusing a monoppoly, even simpler because they have a monopoly. Because this monopoly is gained and maintained trough the code they created, don't abuse of your monopoly and drastic measures won't have to be taken.
This is a dumb arguments to justify putting a price on it, the real reason is to profit from a court decision. Do they imply people with money don't copy? We all know it's not true, quite the oppsite. Let's pretend it's true though, what will prevent a group of people to gather the money and then clone the OS?
Lol, what they are doing is effectively rendering innoperable a monopoly, nothing else, they actually succeed where the US failled, as usual, not surprising americans are jealous and will flood this news with witty comments.
If they would the game would be stable. Google handle much more data traffic than WoW yet I haven't seen the service crash or become unusable even once and I'm on the web everyday (I don't say it hasn't just that it must be REALLY rare cause I never even have heard of it). WoW has logging issues, server stability issues since the begginning none of which has ever been addressed. Every patch they release don't solve bug they change bugs. I am ready to bet that this is included in their business model. Some guy somewhere researched how many downtime their player are able to endure before resigning their subscribtion and they are going to do their best so this downtime (via in-game bugs, logging issues, server overloads...) remain. The more downtime the longer it takes to achieve our goal in the game the longer the subscribtion goes.

That was what is considered "proof of concept" on the mac...
Sorry its blunt but that's what it is. It's the music that's copyrighted not the ink you use to transcribe it or the magnetic pulse or the dc voltage, it's the music, whatever the form of retention, production distribution or propagation you use, it's the end result that count.
Music is copyrighted and reproduction is copyrighted, the first copyright means that however you reproduce said song, melody or musical work you have to obtain the rights for it. The second make sure that the recording, the effects used on the instruments, the instruments chosen and so on and so forth cannot be copied without prior approval. Do you have to obtain copyright for the song yes, that is obvious, MIDI, digital audio, airwaves, farts, who cares if the song is the same its the same, you can change the instruments the reverb type, anything if the song is the same its copyrighted, do you have to obtain the second type of rights (often refered to has mechanical rights, even though the process could be something else than mechanical) no, because you don't copy a recording, just the material found on it. Therefore if you want to play back a Beattle song reproduced in MIDI you first have to obtainn the copyright to the song but once you get those rights you can record it, broadcast it anyway you like because the recording is different and therefore you have no mechanical rights to obtain.
If I mutilate your child can I call it my own? grim way to put it but that's exactly what it is, the mutilation is done by me not you, the child, however, even if he looks very different, is still your child.
Not really, consider that the signal sent is digital but the transport is analog, you could assign values to frequency shifts, phase shift and amplitude levels. Greater power permits greater amplitude, depending on the resolution of the A/D converter at the other end, greater amplitude can lead to more information channels. A 16bits A/D could therefore have a theoretical 65536 channels into which information could be extrated from frequency shifts and phase shifts, hence greater power=more information.
Of course this is purely hypothetical, but it illustrate that greater power can mean more information. I don't know if that is the trick used here I just say it's not as far fetched or impossible as you imply.
First the fact that your software generates low frequency is in NO way an indication of even your sound card being able to reproduce it. I have yet to see D/A converters working under 20Hz for a starter, then you would have to have a subwoofer able to reproduce it, the one mentionned in the article being the first one it seems. Not to mention you need the amplifier to reproduce something under 20Hz.
Realize that audio gear being able to work efficiently at 20Hz, is rare, expensive and usually geared toward studios, take a look at your gear spec, you'll see that most consummer, prosummer and semi-pro and even some pro gear start their frequency response range at 35Hz...
The THX specification used by most theatre prevent frequencies under 20Hz to be reproduced, amongst other. Titan A.E. was produced under the THX pm3 specifications, which is the small room (studio) equivalent of THX, it let studio operators have a good idea of the end result in a theatre. There is another reason that even Titan A.E. or any other movie does not have content below 20Hz, below 20Hz we are talking about movement and in movie theatres sound amplitude is high, bass are most often constant, such a movement, at this amplitude generated continuously could potentially affect the movie theatre structure, its dangerous, plain and simple.
What you heard was probably the mechanical rumble of a subwoofer moving during high amplitude passages, if also means the subwoofer was on the ground or somewhat connected to the movie theatre structure.
Not only you don't hear those frequency they actually feel like vibration, very low vibration, disturbing vibrations. Plus since EVERYTHING you happen to listen to has been recorded on gear thats doesn't reproduce frequencies below 20HZ, and even then, it's perfectly and uterly useless, for 13000$...
I've worked in studios, I've been consultant for studios and even built some, many project and home studios and 3 commercial studios (no commercial studio is built alone so count me part of a team on those). No studio, none, is equiped to deal with such low frequency for obvious reasons, comfort and audibility being the 2 most obvious, so even if your subwoofer reproduces frquencies below 20hz you will never know it.
I have quite a few friends working in the video game industry, they mostly started with a salary of 10-12$ an hour, SOME of them got promotion and now have 32-36K$ salary, and that's canadian money. The argument being that so many people want to do this job that if they aren't happy with their salary they can go look elsewhere, everybody is replaceable. Problem is, the game industry want a bigger pool of people to draw talent from so they ask their friend to write BS articles about how programmers start at awesome salaries, young impressionnable to-be-students pick up private school courses (cause they are better, or so they say) at 12-20K$ per year, those school then make a crapload of money, about 10-20 students get jobs at the end of the year (out of an average of 250 student per school). Most of these jobs, if not all, are as game testers, not programmers. After a few years they get to program a bit, by then only 2-5 student of the original 250 are still in the business at the above mentionned salary. In a few year maybe one of them will get promotted to head programmer or something like that and will get the nice salary. Meanwhile hundreds of students get out of school with an enormous debt with no possibility of following another course (having expended most of the possible loan limit imposed by the government, 25K in Canada) and no interesting job to pick from except multimedia houses where they will get paid a meager salary to do a very uninteresting job. I have worked in one of those school, during 3 years and I got out because of this. The industry is completely saturated and those kind of articles are extremely evil by nature because they help to sell unatainable dreams to impressionnable young students. This is the kind of BS article that make me proud of not having IGN in my bookmarks.
Dam if you are to write in french to look intelligent write correctly, if you are to correct someone who wrote in french too look even more intelligent correct him correctly.;)
Common, how much bullshit can you hear/read before identifying it as it. Does it only require jazz in front of the word musician for people to view someone as a musicologist? Britney Spears makes dimwitted easy music for people who don't really like music but wanna look cool. It's what we call in the business train music, it comes real hard and goes fast and then we forget about it, she's no bethoven, she's no Beattles, she's a musician that makes hits and sell records, period. Its quite something to be able to do this but no need to go overboard. Giving it some intellectual value is downright insulting to anyone who actually care about music for something else than knowing what to wear or how to groove, mean, care for the music . No need to listen to classical music, or jazz, which are indeed decent form of music, even pop music brings forth some very interesting stuff, Radiohead, Kid Koala, and many many others are actually deep stuff, innovative and accessible stuff, hip-hop even, Mo Wax record label has proven many time that hip-hop could be extremely complex and accessible. If you need to invoke the name of a no one self-described "jazz" musician for people to believe Britney is complex stuff it just mean it isn't. If Britney was complex stuff you grandma would find it complex even if joe nowhere "jazz" musician wouldn't say it. there is nothing innovative or original about her music, or complex.
There's no reason iTunes can't let you re-download your music.
So what you are telling us is that when your CDs get stollen or your house burn down you can go to your real world music store and just pick the CDs that got destroyed/stolen in the process for free?
I attended an internationnal conference on neural networks in Montreal recently. Well, attended is a big word here, I was the AV technician on the floor. I listened to many talks, some of which I could barely understand what they were about. the closing speech was made by a man who has been working all his life in Neural Networks, respected by all in the room. He was their mentor, for some of them, he litteraly has been. He was speaking of the current state of artificial intelligence, cybernetic implants and the like. Not at a sci-fi level, as an everyday reality, he was speaking of the states of those technologies as of now. As of now we cannot even reproduce the brain of a housefly, no computer in the world is able to reproduce in real-time a brain as basic as the brain of a housefly. Contrary to popular belief we are eons away from a computer that can think and operate as a human brain. When you start thinking at everything your brain does at any given moment it becomes mind buggling that we can even think abstract though or be conscious of our own self. Singularity will happen, but not now, not soon, we'll first have to understand what we are before we can up the ante in the chain of life...
Not to forget bang for the bucks, Nvidia 7800 might be more powerfull but for the money it cost it might be kinda dumb to buy it, especially since the power boost is almost meaningless outside an SLI rig, of course the alpha antialiaising is a great addition but again, its all about power per buck I guess...
And a product invented in 2001 might still be the best of the crop in 2005...
I thank God everyday for giving us a minority government, every single day of my life. Minority government HAVE to work for real on real issues to get anything done, to get legislation to pass, they have to work on politics if they want to be reelected, they have to produce concrete result to justify their position, to convince others. They have to be political and defend their conception of the Canadian society instead of offering jobs and contracts to their friend, instead of manipulating the political system to fill it with like-minded people, instead of using our taxpayers money to fund private entreprise.
Minority government are an ideolical and political blessing. Please all my canadian friend of the west vote NPD, please my canadian friend of the prairies vote Blue, Ontario, Please vote Red, Quebec please vote Bloc Québecois, we haven't had such incredible results and advancement in our society and its perception by the government than since this minority government was formed. May God continue to bless us all for the forthcomming election and lets vote again for a minority government, our country is just getting better and our freedoms and rights are just more respected because of it. For once Fellow Canadian lets unite and agree, lets vote different!

Dam if you are to write in french to look intelligent write correctly, if you are to correct someone who wrote in french too look even more intelligent correct him correctly.

As it turns out its the best of them, some people disagree but most people prefer it to anything else, hence the best product claim.
