If they move to sealand, what's to stop the MPAA/RIAA from buying an old Russian Bomber / Diesel Sub / whatever and just destroying the whole platform?
I think someone's been watching a few too many movies...
That's just flat out wrong. I've had my iPod for over a year now and I never installed iTunes.
Even before I switched to Linux, I used EphPod which works well enough and is simple enough for the non-techie to use. After I switched to Ubuntu, gtkpod worked "out of the box."
As for sources of music, you can either rip CD's as was mentioned by another poster, or there are other music sites that provide music in a non-DRM'ed mp3 format which work fine on the iPod.
Uh... M$ was making buggy software long before the "current administration" came to power.
What?!?! You mean Bush isn't responsible for *everything* bad that's happening today? But... but... he caused Hurricane Katrina! Bush caused global warming! My microwave's broken... I think Bush did it!
I'm a conservative (but not a Republican), and while I can't say I agree with a lot of what the current administration's doing, I'm tired of the far (and getting farther every day) left trying to blame everything on Bush.
No, I use it in Linux all the time. FreePascal and Lazarus are being actively developed and are very powerful. Most code you wrote in Delphi/Kylix can be compiled (most of the time with little or no changes) with FPC with the delphi mode compiler directive turned on.
... but EasyUbuntu accomplishes the same thing (at least as far as the codecs and drivers go, I didn't RTFA) for Ubuntu and is as easy as the name suggests.
I was looking for this feature as well. After a while, a little googling revealed that there are some great Greasemonkey scripts that will allow you to do this from Google, YouTube, iFilm, and others. I don't have the link, but you should be able to find it on userscripts.org.
We should all write stern letters to GM and Ford, telling them how evil all their vehicles are because a small minority of people use them for evil.
Offtopic, I know, but this is the same thing I think every time I read about some genious new piece of legislature designed to ban handguns or otherwise take away my 2nd amendment rights.
Actually, since I posted last I was googling and found a few threads (one example) that indicate that performance when using VMWare Server and connecting to it via its Console program (even when connected locally) is worse than when using VMWare Workstation or Player because you're basically connected over a socket via some VNC/rdesktop-like protocol (don't know the specifics, sorry). When its just running in the background as a server the performance is fine, it's when you're using it interactively with the Console that you'll notice a difference.
Has anyone seen any performance differences between the two (Player and Server)? I installed server and it seemed to run quite a bit more slowly than player did loading the same VM. I'll admit the host machine isn't the beefiest (2GHz Athlon with 768 MB of RAM), and that's probably my problem, but I'd still like to know if anybody else has noticed any differences.
Although I know it's not exactly the same thing, it brings up some interesting questions about the rights of the creator of the work vs. the right of the viewer of the work.
For example, I have a TV Guardian, which is basically a little box that sits in front of your TV and mutes the volume when profanity comes on, displaying the closed caption with a tamed-down version of the word. I, personally, don't like to hear profanity (nor do I like my young daughter to hear it), so I love it. Is this also "illegal" along the same lines?
What about me using something like Adblock or Greasemonkey to change or filter content I'd rather not see? I've got a Greasemonkey script that replaces most profanity in web pages with *'s. Am I violating the rights of the author of the web page?
While IANAL and I understand there are laws in place to keep people from changing and reselling copyrighted work, I do see where these "rednecks," as another post called them, are coming from. Personally, I think it's more than just "rednecks" who are interested in something like that, but to each his own.
What is wrong about letting people do what they want as long as they aren't harming anyone else?
Often though, when drugs and alchohol are involved, not "harming anyone else" can easily turn into "losing complete control of oneself and harming other people." I know enough people killed/maimed by drunk/stoned drivers.
My personal favorite from when I worked tech support for a local ISP:
We were sort of the "ghetto" ISP (ie., the only ISP in town with offices within walking distance from some of the more questionable areas of the city) so we got a lot of, um, "interesting" clients.
Anyway, we had this older woman we called "stick lady" because she would carry around a walking stick wherever she went. Not actually use the stick, mind you, just carry it around. The stick would never actually touch the ground. Well, she had a laptop and it had been running really slow, so she decided to buy a new one. When it finally arrived, she brought it in to the shop to have me set up the dialing software to connect to the internet. She brings the laptop in, sets it on the workbench, then pulls out her old laptop, opens it up, and sets it down next to the first. I asked her, "Oh, are we going to be configuring both of your laptops today?" She replied, "No, I always use them like this. The new one likes having the old one nearby. Helps it run faster, you know."
Honest to goodness truth. I think I ruptured my spleen trying not to laugh in her face.
What hinders them is the Slashdot Coliseo wordmark and the ------- stupid ------- green colour.
This may be slightly offtopic, but if you don't like the color, get the Slashdotter extension for Firefox. It allows you to customize which style is used when viewing the site. That is assuming you use Firefox, though...
Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying, I think you can do this. I've got a filter I use to make sure emails from my wife don't get the same label as the chats from my wife.
from: email@email.com
subject: -"Chat with Andrea"
Isn't the minus sign used as a NOT when filtering?
The FEDS are mistakenly assuming that most of the talent which resulted in snort resides at Sourcefire, which is simply not true. Being an open source product, a lot of its development is done by others, a lot of whom don't live in the U.S. anyway. I smell FUD...
One thing i would change about the iPod is to get rid of the annoying dependancy on iTunes.
I've got an iPod, and I don't use iTunes. There are other alternatives, including EphPhod and gtkpod (my personal favorite) which work very well. I send my own gripped, DRM-free mp3 files to my iPod with gtkpod and am able to enjoy my device without the iTunes apron-strings (DRM, Windows, etc.).
I think someone's been watching a few too many movies...
I'm sorry, but to me, the words "legal" and "moral" are not synonymous. I can think of plenty of legal things that I consider immoral.
At first I read that Shakira. I couldn't figure out what the Iraqi's like so much about Latin music.

1. Get tech job
2. Move to Idaho Falls
3. Buy rifle or fishing pole
4. Become Mormon (optional)
5. ?
6. Profit!

I am using VMWare Tools, yes.

Yeah, well, they thought Jack Bauer was dead, too.
I for one welcome our new South Pole Santa Claus overlord.
I, for one, being easily offended, am offended by your accusations against the easily offended.
...you don't have to deal with people yelling "WHERE YOU AT" into their cell phones...
Please... everyone knows the correct usage is "where are you at."

How long exactly has Longhorn, er, Vista been pushed off? Six weeks pales in comparison.
