  1. Mac and the command line on Learning Unix for Mac OS X Panther · · Score: 1

The above did not mention Darwinports, an excellent alternative to Fink. http://darwinports.opendarwin.org/

I live in the terminal on my ibook. Darwinports provided wget, unison, tin, links, mutt, irssi, anacron, and a ton of other Unix stuff. Of course Macs already come with vim, emacs, and the ability to alias emacs='vim'.

Roll up your sleeves and open that terminal!

  2. Re:And as usual, Apple is the pioneer on The Death of the Floppy Disk · · Score: 1

It may be more accurate to say that Steve Jobs was the first to realize the floppy was dead, and NeXT was the first company to move on. (Though of course NeXT had little mainstream success). When Apple assimilated NeXT, then Apple dropped the floppy.

1998? Jobs gave up on them around 1986! Of course, in hindsight, people weren't ready or able to give up on sneakernet.

  3. Modestly profitable? on Apple vs. Microsoft Myths Revisited · · Score: 5, Insightful

"Apple matured into a modestly profitable computer company. Macs account for about 5 percent of the computers in the U.S., and 2 percent world-wide."

Since when is a Fortune 500 company modestly profitable?

Well, ok. This is 2004. Let me try again.

Since when has a modestly profitable company lasted for so long in the Fortune 500 ranks?

Apple makes money. Everyone tells them what they ought to do. Like it or not, Steve Jobs is usually right about what they ought to do. It isn't licensing. Profit != marketshare.

  5. Apple iBook G4 on Laptops with the Longest Battery Life? · · Score: 5, Informative

My G4-800 iBook has lasted at least six hours, perhaps longer.

I'm a Linux user but Mac laptops are lovely, with excellent battery life. Too bad Airport Express (and power management?) isn't supported on Linux PPC.

  6. Author has "no idea what was responsible for name" on The History Of Pentium · · Score: 5, Informative

The reason Intel broke with tradition and gave this chip a non-numeric name is because numbers cannot be copyrighted/trademarked.

Anyone could sell a "586 Chip": competitive chip makers like AMD and Doritos.

They switched to Pentium so nobody else could use the name.

  8. Lucas doesn't know his strengths on Can Star Wars Episode III Be Saved? · · Score: 1

Episodes 1-3 could have been terrific if George Lucas could recognize that his talents are limited.

In terms of coming up with an aesthetic and mood, he is genius. In terms of dialogue and storytelling, his skills have severely declined. (Or his commitment to technology has inhibited those skills.)

He should have stuck to set design and broad plot outline, while letting someone with talent handle dialogue and direction.

This is all assuming that the real problem isn't his commitment to marketing his film to children. Maybe the action figures, cereal, bicycles, and other assorted products drive film production? If so, it is a miracle that this man was able to create the wonderful Episodes IV and V.

  11. Formal Logic on Math And The Computer Science Major · · Score: 1

I am not a programmer, but I was a bit surprised that the article did not mention formal logic. I would think that courses in mathematical logic would build useful skills. These courses are usually cross-listed in Philosophy and Mathematics, but they're also associated with Computer Science/Electrical Engineering. Also, a certain sort of modal logic (epistemic logic) is actually used by programmers, is it not? This allows you do model and draw inferences from what an 'agent' knows and believes.

  12. Does it matter? on TheOpenCD 1.4 Released · · Score: 2, Interesting

Maybe I'm blinded by my exposure to all different types of software, but does it matter if the widgets are different? For example, Mac users complain about the widgets on the Mac OpenOffice port. To me this makes absolutely no difference! It's mostly aesthetic. I've heard complaints that this makes the software 'unusable.' I don't even notice! In my experience you have to learn how each piece of software works. Whether they all look/behave the same is less important than how well each of them are designed. No, I'm not saying that widgets are totally irrelevant. But I'd rather use a CD full of good, free software using many widget sets than use Internet Explorer, Office, etc.

  13. Re:Simpsons Lifecycle Ending on Simpsons Pay Dispute Settled · · Score: 1

I really don't think Fox is going to cancel the series because a bunch of hard-core fanboys complain about the writing. All fans pine for the golden age. With music, some vocal fans generally sour on a band after 3-5 years. Either they've "sold out or stopped innovating." The same goes for the Simpsons. Of course it isn't as fresh as it used to be--but it still makes me laugh. The series is a cash cow and will continue as long as everyone wants to continue making money by producing the show. Bitter complaints from old fans are inevitable and irrelevant.

  14. Good enough for the command line on Many Internet Users Happy With Dial-Up · · Score: 1
