We can sit here and laugh at people who downloaded this stupid, stupid program. Heck, if one of us did it I think we would all laugh and laugh.
But this sad problem is the same problem that every new computer user has. No matter if you use Windows or Linux or Mac or / all new users have a tough time learning which program they need to accomplish a specific task. Hell, I spend more time telling people what program to use, more than actually fixing something.
Do you family and friends a favor. Since we all know the OSS versions of these programs, why not just post a list of what you use in your daily life so they can just look it up? Seems the easiest way to prevent non-computer people from getting screwed is for geeks to post their program list. Now that OSS has come around, I'm sure more of us can actually do that!
So what if there aren't enough women in CS? So long as there isn't some troll department head with a hatred for women turning them away in droves, what do you expect us to really do about it?
It seems to me, if you want to get more women into CS (or any other technical field) you just need to get their parents to let the idea slip into their daughters heads ever now and again. My wife was once a CS major, thankfully she changed to civil engineering. She was a miserable cuss when she had to start debugging. I love it, she hates it. It's not a statement about the sexes, but a statement that sometimes you have to do what you want to do. She is an amazing civil engineer, somethng that I would be a miserable cuss if I had to do. It's just personal preference.
She would make the worlds shittiest nurse:)
The funny thing is, she wanted to be an art major. Right before she graduated high school someone finally made the suggestion that she try engineering. She was (is) very good at math, and no one told her engineering was a career option until her senior year. She liked it because it blended art and math, really a natural choice for her. You don't have to take a girl to a summer camp to get her interested in something, you just have to say "Hey, you might want to look into this, it could be good based upon your skills". That's all it takes.
Of course CS peeps could do much better about not being such lonely and sad people. I have a male friend with the name Kelly. He's a CS major, getting his graduate degree right now. One day he turned in his assignment and the TA began emailing him. Why? Because he thought Kelly was a girl, and he decided to email "her" to let her know that "her" code was so beautiful he wanted to know how a girl did it.
My friend freaked out enough thinking the TA knew he was a guy. I can only imagine how pissed off a woman would have been had the TA been right about the sex. This from a TA at Georgia Tech. Totally uncalled for.
So the solution is obviously get parents to actually show their children the jobs that are available from a young age, and for young CS guys to stop getting off on every techie chick they see. Sure, being a techie chick makes you totally hot, but keep it in your pants young man! You don't hit on people in class, you hit on them after class. Jeez.
But if you aren't a guy in college, or a man with a daughter, what the hell am I supposed to do about it, and why should I care?
Actually you don't need a degree to be an (non-software) engineer. I've started off doing CAD when I was 16, and have moved into design in the time since then. I now have enough work experience to qualify to take the EIT and PE if I so chose too.
Just like everything else, it doesn't come down to what the person was taught, but what the person has learned.
You're right though. It has been a pain in the ass to work to where I'm at now. A degree would have been simpler, but then all I would know is engineering instead of construction, project management, documentation, network administration, programming, etc that you pick up from just jumping in!
Does it label be a geek when I say that was the funniest joke I have heard in months? But it sucks, cause it's not exactly a joke to tell at parties.
Ok. You see, Gentoo Linux uses a system called portage that is based on the ports system of BSD. Umm, BSD is an operating system. Jesus, ok an operating system is like Windows. No, not like IE, that's your browser - screw it. It's not funny anyway.
I use my Caps Lock key everyday. That's like a n00b going around and trying to get rid of the F keys because they don't know what they are used for.
Was the news really this slow today?
Unless your SO happens to enjoy everything that you do, chances are good that she has things that she likes to do, but you hate.
For instance, I am a gamer but my wife isn't. She likes American Idol, I think it is stupid. The fix, play games when American Idol is on (ok, bad timing I'll admit, but you get the idea).
Better yet, treat it like everything else. Set aside a few hours a week that you will be gaming. If you are gaming as opposed to going out to bars with the boys then she really can't complain too much about it. You have a life as well. Of course if you are gaming more than a few hours a week (ie. you can't get your time in in one good day) then this won't work either. You'll have to find her a hobby, or send her to visit with her parents:-)
I had been riding my bike to work everyday for about a 2 years. It was only one mile but I had to climb about 900 feet in elevation each way. Not a good thing to be doing in Georgia's humidity and heat. Plus I had to cross over two interstates and ride on Peachtree Street.
While I was getting good exercize, my lungs still felt like crap. I'm glad to have a car again...
There was a Motor Trend article that talked about the flawed mileage issues and came up with some real world numbers of their own based upon their test results. They tested the 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid, the 2004 Toyota Prius, the 2004 Honda Insight, and the 2003 Toyota Prius.
Oh my, CD sales have gone down. Be sure to blame all of the pirates (arrg) and Indian outsourcing while you are at it.
The fact remains that you (the record industry) have lied to your customers for years. Remember back when CD's first came out, the recording industry said that the materials to produce the disk are much cheaper and would eventually cost less than a cassette. Hasn't happened.
I recently paid $26 for a 2 disk set (it was Outkast, so I at least paid alot for a good set, but it still pissed me off) at a local record store. As worthwhile as the cover art might have been (Andre's clothing is usually worth a couple bucks) it doesn't change the fact that everyone now knows the cost of the media and the case and realize that however nice the art might be, it isn't worth a $20 mark-up.
Everyone knows that the value of the media and case is less than a dollar now, and transportation costs have plummetted, yet still the prices have gone up. They still operate on the same lousy business model that rewards short term gain and ignores long term investment. Instead of delivering a wide array of options and thus fostering a musically inclined culture, they give us Justin Timberlake and Nora Jones and complain when someone doesn't buy it.
Look mac, I already have Justin Timberlake's album, it's called Thriller. I'm not spending $20 for another one. Perhaps you would make some money if you released some music that hasn't been done 30 times already.

Uhhh, dude. It's the government. This requires hundreds of millions of dollars and 18 months to decide.

Does no one else notice that the Phantom looks just like a George Foreman grill?
Obviously a fake!
