More like a memorial service, am I right??!!

All joking aside, I would like to see a *BSD get to the point where its "year of the desktop" might be as close as Linux's currently is. I tried Free and OpenBSD, and although they are both nice systems, they hold little appeal over Linux outside of the server market, and especially lag behind on the issue of desktop usage. That being said, I would pick OpenBSD for a public server over any Linux distro in a heartbeat... if it was important enough to justify learning the *BSD ins and outs.

Ummm... granted you will need to set it up once by creating an fstab entry (one line in a file, easy to edit) and set the device in the GNOME "mount button" properties window, there is such a thing. Also, if you know that a newly inserted device will take /dev/foo, you can somehow set it up to be automounted on insert, like can be done with a CD-ROM drive.

Well, this also covers the transport layer. It's not like your Internet connection (hi-speed, if you download lots of video content) comes free. Also, there are some premium stations that cost extra. But, I'm speaking in generalities, so don't take things too seriously.

I try to pay for music and movies. I only download movies if they aren't available on DVD, or in my favorite theatre. I only download music if I only want one or two songs from the person. If I want lots, I'll buy the CD.

  7. Do I hate commericals? on It's Not TV, It's MythTV · · Score: 3, Interesting

Well, I think TV downloads would work, because, unlike movies and music, TV is offered free of charge to start with (with the exception of commericial-free stations). Also, TV is a one-shot deal (except for PVRs), so I, for one, wouldn't be as opposed to DRM. Also, I could stand a "free" download of a show, where you get it with commericals, and a "premium" commerical-free option. It's not like I can't stand any commericals; it's just stupid ones, or when they get shown twice in a row. Perhaps you could block certain commericals, and the commericals would be custom-added to each show (or several different commerical themes, so men don't have to watch Tampax commericals and the like).

Yes, but it is a definite improvement. Independent benchmarks have shown it. Perhaps the problem is a lack of true 64-bit operating systems and programs, although this should soon change (Linux leading the way of course).

  13. But will they be 64-bit? on Dual Core Intel Processors Sooner Than Expected · · Score: 4, Interesting

As I see it, the smart step to take would be to start with consumer-level 64-bit chips, make them as fast as they can be, and then move on to dual-core. The only way dual-core could be better at this point is if it is given to the server market, where 64-bit Intel processors already exist.

  14. Re:Just personal experience on Microsoft Claims Linux Security a Myth · · Score: 1

Exactly. The weak point of Linux is interface. Also, perhaps you haven't installed Windows in a while, but nice Linux installers (i.e. Fedora, SuSE, Mandrake) far outdo the XP installer. When it even boots, that is (I have had problems with the Install/Repair CD booting. Knoppix worked fine). Also, I think that you will find Linux does have a user base, just not on the desktop. Servers are computers too, you know! Also, you will find on all but the first two (in terms of desktop usage), Mac OS X beats them all. But the point of this article is security, not interface and popularity. Therefore, I didn't feel the need to compare every facet of Windows with every facet of Linux; only security.

    Edge: Linux

    Default Habits:
Windows: The Windows XP install, by default, seems to create an Administrator account with no password, no User account, and no suggestion that there should be a user account. Also, there's many services that are on by default, that really shouldn't be.
Linux: All linux distros I've used require a root password, and strongly emphasize that root is not to be used for day-to-day computing. Depending on the distro, most unnecessary services are off by default.

    Updating:
Windows: Use an insecure browser, tied to the OS itself, to browse to Windows Update, wherein the system is updated. Note that these updates have a nasty habit of breaking things, and this does not update third-party software which may be vulnerable.
