Maybe. And maybe at some point it will be. But at this point in time the USA has no official language, and therefore can not force people to use a specific language for government participation.
Voting is optional as well, no one forces you to vote, and indeed most people do not. Government should be forced to accommodate everyone? What if I demand to have my ballot translated into Latin? Sure I know English, I know several languages. Who are YOU to tell me which one I have to vote in? Latin might be what I am most comfortable with....
Your job next election then: ensure each voting booth in Orange County, CA has enough paper ballots in the proper languages, including (but not exclusive to) English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese and Korean. Also keep braille ballots on hand.
Not to be a troll, but there are a number of hurdles people are supposed to hop over to become US citizens. Maybe a usable knowledge of the most common language (english) should be one of them?
After all, for much of the temperate latitudes for much of the year the external ambient temperature is at or below that needed for the data centre so why not use conditioned external air to cool the equipment and then exhaust it...
So what? Google owns a load of patents themselves. Do you think they would let it slide if someone else was using their patented technology? Just because everyone at Slashdot is infatuated with Google doesn't mean they shouldn't have play by the same rules they themselves make others play by.
Most places around here we have unemployment insurance. They walk me out 6 months ahead of time, I spend 6 months "searching" for the job I already have lined up to start 6 months from now...
Not necessarily true. Your employer can switch gears and say you where fired for cause. Ever been to an unemployment hearing? The deck is stacked against you, they bring a lawyer. Can you afford one? The hearing officer is often "personally aquanted" with your employer's lawyer (who is a specialist in unemployment). You lose. Six months working as a flager or something is your future.
I should know better than to feed the trolls but you do know these guys are not responsible for Open Document and have no official status.
Yes, I think most people here at Slashdot understand that. And just about everyone else doesn't care. And that's the thing: While there is a good amount of frothing conspiracy theory going on, it really doesn't matter because no one really cared about the "Open Document Foundation" anyway. And that's probably one reason they shut down, they just where not effective FUD.
Keep in mind that I was responding to a suggestion to quit with no notice. In the professional world, that is called "being a dick". But if you are willing to do that, you may as well be a dick that is getting free money.
My point is that when an employer walks you out the door when you give notice, they don't have to pay you anything (unless your contract says so), and probably will not.
Most employees are "at will" employees. You can be fired at any time for no reason. Unemployment my apply, but two free weeks of pay almost certainly does not.
If I was at a company where the standard practice was to walk someone out the door as soon as they gave notice, I would give them 6 months notice. After all, maybe they would walk me out immediately and pay me for the next 6 months.
I'm sorry, what planet do you live on? I assume you're in the US, right? Your employer would be exercising their right to fire you for no reason at all as an "at will" employee. At most you might qualify for unemployment. But 6 months free money? I don't think so, unless you have some special employment contract that covers this area, and that's not likely.
I am somehow not convinced... how many TB of data would a major provider like that move in a day? Those would have to be some moby servers...
That it is all forwarded through that secret room doesn't mean that they look at it all. Perhaps they have some algorithm, some system or filter, for determining what they want to look at closer...
As I've pointed out in the past, there are a number of high profile consumer computer mags that get an amazingly (and suspicious) free ride here at Slashdot.
Let them close it. As long as the open source community doesn't use it to distribute isos, I'm happy.
Indeed. BitTorrent.Inc can join Napster, Netscape, Skype, and all the rest in obscurity and eventual death. The dustbin of the Interweb is full of great ideas that have outlived their relevence.
The problem here is that while Jimmy Wales leaches money from donations from WikiDrones to pay for his corporate empire, most people have to find more traditional sources of income. Hence, advertising. But it's really no different than advertising on any site. For example Slashdot.
Are you suggesting that VA Software is biased in favor of Microsoft just because The Borg advertises both here and other VA Software properties?
And how exactly are they going to "force" this? Such things require legal documents, Microsoft has no power to waltz in and demand anything. I bought it, it's mine, YOU prove otherwise. Have your lawyers call my lawyers. Anyway, businesses that don't keep licenses and receipts are idiots.
I'm sure 99% of american's have MORE THAN ONE credit card...
I don't think that's true anymore. Many people choose to live within their means these days when Credit Card Companies screw everyone but the very wealthy with astronomical percentage rates and draconian fee structures. It doesn't mean people don't have money, it means they don't want to give it to Credit Card Companies.
Now, most people have Debit Cards, which may be acceptable to Apple...
Canadian dollars, right? So in American that guy just got back $10k, right? Payday!
You must be stuck in the 60's. Right now the Canadian Dollar is much stronger than the US, and it will only get stronger considering the US economy is based on two kinds of jobs, McDonald's and The Iraqi War Machine. The US will became a "second world nation" (if it isn't already) within 10 years.
EULA agreement which states, approximately: '[I]f the end user is not willing to abide by this EULA... he shall immediately contact the producer to get info for giving back the product and obtaining refunds.'
States approximately? I'd prefer to know exactly before I made any conclusions.

Communists are "OK" because although they may be godless, at least ther are not Muslim.
Remember, this war is about two things: GWB's version of Christian God, and oil. In that order.
As I've pointed out in the past, there are a number of high profile consumer computer mags that get an amazingly (and suspicious) free ride here at Slashdot.
Let's hear it for BitTorrent! Here, here!
I think you would be hard-pressed to say they are...

The GNOME boys didn't get their monthly manila envelope from Microsoft.
