but also the hundreds or thousands of acquaintances you have online?
I have never used Twitter. I have a Facebook account to keep track of people I actually know, mostly old frieds, mybe 50 at most. I do not Facebook with people at work.
The definition of "acquaintance" seems to have changed since I grew up. To me, someone I have never met in human form, nor had any significant conversation with either in person or "on line", is not an "acquaintance".
Luddite Rube, you say? OK, as you say... Involved with professionally "IT" since 1988, high in the IT food chain at a major US Air Force Base...
Most (if not all) garlic in the US now comes from China, thanks to their dumping of garlic.
Garlic is a major crop in Washington State. But, you can always shop at the local food coop or farmer's market for "certified organic" which will definitely not be a Chinese product.
The NSA doesn't have any red tape or legacy junk holding them on '80s software...
Depending on how the US Gubment *really* feels about Bitcoin, it might just be on their "radar" to put the Super Secret Super Computers at the NSA on this to undermine (heh, heh...) Bitcoin this way.
People either seem never to report the numbers, or only those with relatively poor Bitcoin numbers report them.
Perhaps they are reporting the numbers, but most of the numbers are "poor"?
The "carrot" has always been "we can use this as currency for purchasing goods!" but the reality has always been that Bitcoin is in reality a speculative commodity that is rarely used in commerce.
I was going to reply then realized it was an Anonymous Coward. Is it me or are there a lot more Anonymous Cowards inside and outside Slashdot.org?
It's really not safe to express a controversial opinion at Slashdot anymore, lest you find yourself posting at -1 Karma, instead of engaging in thoughtful discussion.
Social networks are useful. It's about time we wrote and popularized a distributed one, hosted on our own machines rather than dependent on some group of folks to whom we are products, not customers.
The US Government knows that they need SpaceX, and Texas definitely wants SpaceX to stay in Texas, and folks, both for the completely obvious reasons.
Of course there are reviews to take place, and itâ(TM)s my guess that none of this is either a surprise nor going to be a roadblock to the SpaceX Thunderdome in Texasâ¦
Who cares about coral or the sea? It's better to poison and destroy the whole world so that walmart get it's chinese crap brought in on time.
What are your wearing? What kind of phone do you have? What type of computing device do you use? What kind of car/bicycle/motorcycle/mass transit do you use?
My guess is that a great deal of what *YOU* consume, even if you didn't buy it at Wal-Mart, was not made in the United States, and almost certainly was shipped here from... Asia!
If you really want to "put your money where your mouth is", go live on a self-sustaining commune. It's not the 60's anymore, but they still exist.
There are much more useful things to donate money to. If these folks believe this this is something people would buy and pin up on the wall ay home or their office, they can invest their own money and sell 'em to the ThinkGeek folks...
Tried that. They still blocked the card after my first transaction abroad. You are making the mistake of thinking banks have processes that meet your needs, rather than their needs.
I bank with B of A, and travel a few times a year to far away places. I've never had this issue. Perhaps you need to look into a different bank?
If anyone is dumb enough to connect nuclear power plants to the internet... well, let's just say we'll learn that lesson and never make that mistake again.
You're talking about Stuxnet, right? You must be from Iran?
You can't post from the iPhone anymore. Mobile Slashdot on safari is horribly broken. At least for me I can't log in or post once I do login. I switch to classic.Slashdot and everything works as normal. Switch back to mobile and it breaks. I don't know why they can't test it. It is not like you can extend mobile safari.
That's not Apple's issue, that's a Slashdot issue. Just like unicode...
"Windows Metro" is dead, irrelevant to this discussion. QT will continue to be available for Apple's little garden. Your comment constitues "fear mongering".
Hipster Mobile for the Glasshole crowd.
Dice killed it, just like they killed Sourceforge and are killing Slashdot.

Yup, I'm a Luddite Rube...

My company routinely has customers pay in Bitcoins and I've stopped converting them to USD as there are plenty of avenues to spend them...
What's your spot price for a kilo?

You have only one solution. Move. England, Australia...
Really? Seriously? You think the UK or Australia has more "freedom"/ Seriously? You don't follow politics in those countries, do you.
Social networks are useful. It's about time we wrote and popularized a distributed one, hosted on our own machines rather than dependent on some group of folks to whom we are products, not customers.
Email lists.
The "story", such that it is, was probably submitted by a "Libertarian".
Remember "Love Canal"? This is what happens with no regulation, minimal regulation, or simply ignoring regulation.
I know, the reference is so old, the 20-somethings that now populate Slashdot will say "what?" ...
Get off my lawn.
These are all formalities.

And we already know what happens to animal life that's subjected to climate change: it dies out, sooner or later.
You are not a believer in evolution?

Can you really not see a difference?
Bullshit. Uber/Lyft is simply an unlicensed cab dispatched via a phone app.
A lot of people don't travel with their phones to foreign countries because it's too damn expensive.
I travel to Italy several times a year, I purchased an iPod Touch and loaded Skype on it for making phone calls overseas...

Removing slander is one thing, removing accurate information that is public record could be considered censorship
What is a "public record" in one country may be defined differently in another. Likewise, thresholds for what is slander differ as well.
Who is "John Oliver"? And this post reminds me of Spurious Correlations.
Some random comic makes a joke to a small segment of the TV watching late-nighters, and this somehow took down an FCC web site?
Sure, OK, if it makes you feel better....

Why is this dumb post modded insightful? You can still use all the same languages you did before.
Because Slashdot Sheep have a childish hate for apple, as they post comments from their iPhones?
Qt does not (and cannot) support Windows "Metro"
"Windows Metro" is dead, irrelevant to this discussion. QT will continue to be available for Apple's little garden. Your comment constitues "fear mongering".
Aye. The thing is according to Swedish law TPB should be legal.
Apparently your understanding of Swedish law is as good as mine, which is absolutely none.
One assumes that if the man was convicted of a "crime" in Sweden, than what he did was against Swedish Law...
