How I wish I could mod you up. This IS NOT about Linux vs. Windows. This is about independence vs. dependence. Regardless of the sub-human by some of the recipients of this laptops, I believe that at least at the genetic level they are capable of supporting themselves give the tools of an open platform. This is technically impossible with a closed platform.
I (have to) use it fairly often these days, and I can't say I see what the big deal is about it besides it's unintuitive, but integrated and collaborative calendaring system. Any one care to clue me in?
You don't need copyright to make music. And you don't need copyright to write software. The face of the matter is, you don't need copyright to do any of the things copyright covers. These things aren't reliant on the existence of copyright. Copyright does however give some an advantage over others.
Could a fervent Microsoft Windows user please explain what drivers them to beg their vendor for features and support for products which they have paid, and in different ways, continue to pay for? is it just a state of mind? I don't fully understand it.
You had your years of pre "police state", so let other countries have theirs. Don't export your "values" to other countries and help them go directly to the police state stage under the guise of democracy. If _this_ is democracy, I'd rather not have it.
I don't think the US (not sure about Europe) even need such. Those who are interested in information and gather and disseminate it are often quickly labeled as conspiracy theorists. Most others simply don't care. (large generalizations here of course)
I don't see how this is an argument. If a convicted serial murder known for his knife skills was to ask you to throw him a knife so he could slice an apple, wouldn't you _at least_ give it more careful thought?
Most claim to be highly religious, yet they take these actions which seem to be purely unethically motivated. I often wonder how they imagine themselves squaring accepting money from lobbyists, etc with God. "it was a lot of money" seems like a terrible excuse.
I wasn't aware that AMD has fan boys yet. If they fully open source ATI cards they can send me a shirt and a cap.... but I haven't heard similar voices yet.
Bad example but still... the minimum memory requirements for Centos5 is 256MB. I built a home server and installed Centos while the (eBayed) machine still had 128MB, I had ordered more... but completely forgot about the fact that needed to add more memory because the machine was running perfectly. For a paid product, minimum requirements should give all the features advertised.
God forbid I have a file on my laptop from the one time I toyed with cryptography, or a corrupted binary blob, or whatever... if they get to thinking it's encrypted... what are they going to do? Because there aren't going to be any keys. I can't afford a lawyer, nor do I have an real confidence that I will be afforded one. And there is no 100% sure way to prove that an apparently encrypted file is _not_ encrypted. And one lonesome encrypted file on an otherwise mundane hard drive would look pretty suspicious.
My fear is that the those within the USA with the power will gladly take a large portion of the world down with them. Bare in mind however that I consider myself to be a paranoid person.
Getting African hooked on Microsoft products is helping them? Or teaching them tools that they can later modify and build on themselves is helping them? I mean really, do Slasdotters really have to stretch their imaginations that much to see how using non open platforms helps them less? It is definitely better than nothing, but at this point it isn't nothing. It is going from open to closed. If it had started out closed then the discussion would be different. Seriously, this is purely depressing at this point. Thanks guys. Really.

How would one get such figures?

Please contact your lug or distro's mailing list about this... this should not be so.
When people laugh at Linux for being an OS with a webserver which hosts compromised web pages.
Do you have any reason to believe that KDE can't run well on hardware that isn't the most up to date?
I just hope people can understand that drivers aren't magically the fault of Linux. At least no more than drivers are the fault of Microsoft.

Haha, that's cute.

Could Microsoft please, possible just leave HTML 5 and XHTML 2 alone, and simply follow the standards produced? Pretty please?

lame
Were their no other ISPs? How were you so patient with your paid for service?
Well I use Fedora, and not much Java... so I don't have any Java on my desktop... so if a site needs java, I simply hit the [x]

Well it might be probably cause, but the idea being that if you don't cross the border, they don't have the right to detain you.
He's saying that you could decide no to cross the border AT the border.
