I think it is quite unlike that the alliance between Finland and nazi Germany during II world war had anything to do with this guys interests, although that shooter disliked communists (but on the other hand he said he liked Stalin). Nowadays that alliance is not much more than just part of history.
Btw, one interesting detail in this alliance with nazi Germany is that also Finnish jews were fighting against Soviet union -- together with German nazi soldiers.
It is true that Finnish habbits differ from West European tradition, but as a Finn I find some of the things Linus says, a bit too rude even judging from Finnish perspective. Finns lack small talk, many Western European phrases that are used for politeness etc -- but I would say that important aspect for Finnish manners is also being somewhat shy, trying to avoid uppsetting others and being nervous or at least curious what others think of you.
For example. Linus says ofthen that some idea is idiotic, someone is moron or something like that. I think that more typical for a Finn would to say that the idea simply doesn't work and perhaps offer some arguments to back that claim, but avoid calling it idiotic, because it might sound like you were trying to offend the person who offered the idea.
And I think it is worth noting that Linus is from 6 % minority of Swedish speaking Finns who have somewhat more West European manners although the culturar differencies within Finland aren't that big. But I guess that cultural background is just sugar coating and there are all type of personalities and behaviour in all cultures. It is just that some things tend to be somewhat more common in some cultures than others.
Well, Kimi Räikkönen is a special case in many ways and shouldn't be consired to present a typical Finn. He has some kind speech defect(s) and his speach is difficult to understand even in Finnish. And I think that one reason for his one word answers in English might be that he isn't fluent in English.
Are you Finnish? Have you gone thru the Finnish schooling system? Answer is yes for both questions.
It really isn't that rosy as the studies give impression.
Best part of Finnish school system? Free warm food every day.
They say it's free, which is untrue completely! You pay it in form of education debt, low interest yes, but no one except you pay for the debt, and it's 300 per month.
Nobody said that there aren't some problems, but everything is relative. And nothing changes that on the education level covered by PISA study, the Finnish school system got quite good results compared to most other developed countries.
BTW, it is quite common that students have to pay some of their expenses usings loans, in almost all parts of world there are buildings with mould problems, it is quite rare tha the temperature would drop to -30 Celsius in southern Finland etc. You complain so much about things that are common pretty much everywhere in the world, so I am not sure if you are serious.
So, suppose you have a pulp mill. In Europe, you'd need to make a lot of processing to your waste so you'd keep the rivers totally clean. Down here, you don't need to make it clean. This is of course a risk, but one shouldn't be techno luddite, but to work for implementing tight enough regulation system for industry instead of banning it. And by industry I mean pulp and paper industry and also the production of trees (or some other source of raw material).
I don't know well enough Uruguay or Argentina to comment how that kind of things could be established -- and what kind area we are talking about. But I would say that most Finns are more than happy that there is still a lot pulp and paper industry in Finland and even though there are some negative effects because of this industry, those effects are really small compared to to the money that the industry creates. Perhaps it would help if some skeptical Argentines would come here to see themselves how little negative effects these plants cause if they are modern.
But Botnia does, in fact, use TCF technology at its pulp mill in Rauma, Finland, according to Arrarte. The company has not denied or confirmed this version. Botnia and ENCE's choice of the less safe process means that "Every day, millions of liters of wastewater will be dumped into the river, which will degrade it," Fray Bento activist Delia Villalba told CorpWatch." I think Rauma pulp mill was 10 years ago the first pulp mill that used only TCF technology to bleach pulp. But about a year ago year they announced that they are starting to use also ECF processing at Rauma pulp mill.
And one should remember that using ECF or TCF technology is just part of the picture. The amount of pollution depends to large part on that particular plant how those technologies they are implemented -- and I think this is something you should perhaps be more concerned about.
You gotta watch over your shoulder on our capital city and nearby cities
when going to trainstations, there's people who might try to beat you off just because you don't give them a cigarett or you look too good for their liking or rich. Well, of course things like that happen and railway station during nightime is probably not the safest place to be, but IMHO you are exaggerating. Even during nightime at railway station the risk for getting into that kind of troubles is quite low and most people aren't afraid of being there even during nightime.
None of those are Finnish, but mostly immigrants and such. (Now i will be called a racist). If you say that none of those troublemakers are Finnish, then you are clearly racist.
Education is bad, healthcare seems to be more like deathcare etc.
Of course there are some troubles, but I don't think you give accurate information. For example the PISA study ranked Finnish school system among the top countries.
Forgot to mention, Europe is moving their "dirty industries" to Latin America and other poor countries. Finnish Botnia is making a H U G E paper pulp mill in Uruguay (and keeping their Paper factories in Finland). Is that because they want to share their wealth with us, the poor, or is it because they're going to pollute so much that Europe won't let them build that factory? Why don't they make the paper factory in Uruguay too, so Uruguay can sell paper to Europe (and no the cheap paper pulp)?
I don't know about other industries, but as far as I know, modern paper industry doesn't have to be that polluting anymore. And I think paper industry is mainly interested earning money for their shareholders and it is not that important for them whether they do it in Finland or in Latin America. If there will be mass movement because of pollution, the source for that must be something else than modern paper industry, which hasn't caused too much troubles even in Finland, which has relatively clean environment.
Nowadays Finland has Nokia, but paper industry is still quite important source of money for Finnish society. Paper industry pays lot of taxes directly and the wages at paper factories are known to be quite high even for those with low education level. And that is why most Finns are afraid that pulp and paper industry is starting to move to other countries. We don't want them to leave Finland, but with globalisation and international stock markets, moving to countries where the distance to cheap raw material source and/or customers is lower, wages are lower etc is inevitable.
A few weeks ago, I was trying to find any justification whatsoever for the arab nonsense that goes on in the middle east. I ended up reading several encyclopedia articles, and not one of them had Israel doing something unprovoked.
I think you have read quite biased accounts or using very limited timeframe. For example, it is hard to see how for example zionist invasion to the area from Europe prior Israel was caused by arabs.
I especially like how Hamas broke the cease-fire about a month ago, and when Israel attacked back, Hamas had the gall to ask for another cease-fire. Obviously, diplomacy has not worked, and will not work. They left Lebanon, they left Gaza, and in return they get cross-border raids by extremists.
Diplomacy won't work as US uses always veto to resque Israel -- no matter what is has done -- even though rest of the world disagrees with US and Israel. Embargo against Israel would work as it did work against aparthaid regime South-Africa.
And I wouldn't say that Israel has been innocent before this chrisis either. For example, it has constanly invaded Lebanese airspace and tried to provoke response. And when those fighters have been shot as a self defence using IT artillery and some of those shells have landed within Israel, Israel has retaliated using artillery against Lebanon. And let's not forget all the prisoners Israel keeps and tortures.
Groups like Hezbollah exist solely for hatred, and they are funded by the surrounding arab countries who want to keep the region unstable. Israel does not exist for hatred or genocide.
Even Israeli historians (like Benny Morris) have stated that Israel couldn't exist unless jews had made ethnical cleansing against the local arabs. And all the millions of refugees etc which keep this crisis on, are caused by the Israel ethnical cleansing, robbing/socialising their land etc.
Voting for terrorists makes you a legitimate target.
No it doesn't. And voting for Bush, who started illegal war against Iraq which is a war crime and used terror bombing (shock & awe), doesn't make United States civilians legimate war targets. If you disagree, please support your claim quotiong Geneva convention or some other established international rules of warfare. Besides, not even all Lebanese civilians that have been killed indiscriminately by Israel, have voted for Hezbollah.
You must recognize that Hezbollah is like a geographical province, in addition to an ideological organization, with its own quasi-government and all. Those targets, and also notably, main roads and bridges, were indeed targets. That bombing was intentional.
That doesn't change the fact that for example sewage works is civilian infrastructure. And nondiscriminating use of force, targeting civilians or civialian structures is forbidded as a war crime.
1) They waited too long to evacuate? 2) They were terrorists? 3) In any event, they voted for terrorists in the last election (Hamas, Fatah, Islamic Jihad, etc.); they supported terrorists.
This doesn't matter. Voting for non popular party doesn't turn civilian to a legimite target of war. If it was true, then you could argue that attacing the civilians of Israel (or US) would be allowed, as they have voted for example Bush or Sharon/Olmert. And the same is also true for evacuation. There is no responsibility for civilians to evacuate, and even if they stay or are slow to evacuate from southern Lebanon or northern Israel, you aren't allowed to target them.
And Israel has often claimed that ambulances has been used as a method of warfare, but at least many in many cases of these claims have been later proved to be lies.
I wouldn't be so sure that Israel is willing to give Golan Heights back to Syria even if Syria recognizes Israel. Straight from Wikipedia: On the other hand, the Benjamin Netanyahu government's Basic Policy Guidelines stated "The government views the Golan Heights as essential to the security of the state and its water resources. Retaining Israel's sovereignty over the Golan will be the basis for an arrangement with Syria.
And after World War II, the international community in general, hasn't accepted claiming more land by using warfare. And I think it is good principle, as it reduces the motivation to star wars in the first place.
And Israel might not be interested in killing the maximum number of civilians, but it doesn't cary much of civilian victims and it is doing war crimes and delibetarely destroyng civilian infrastructure. And just days ago Israel army said that for each rocket lacunhed to Israel it will revenge by destroyng 10 Lebanese apartment buildings.
And Israelis might not be handing out candies on streets of Tel Aviv, but Israeli children write messages like "From Israel with Love" to the bombs (warning, gory images) Israel drops to Lebanon.
Most of the prisoner Israel holds have never been sentenced in any court, and they are also not treated as a prisoners of war. Israel should either release all prisoners that are not sentenced of anything and who are not prisoners of war. And it should also stop torturing prisoners.
Not true. Arab countries have promised peace for Israel on the condition on withdrawing behind borders that were before 1967 war, which is an offer Israel has refused. So don't pretend that all arabs want to kill all jews.
But Isreal is targeting civilians even on purpose. For example, destroying the houses where suicide bombers have lived is a collective punishment which is a war crime (as well as many other things Israel does routinely, like forcing palestinians as tying palestinians on the the jeeps and using them as human shields). The persons who suffer because of it, are not just the bomber but his family and neighbours who have had nothing to do with the bombing.
And in case of Lebanon, Israel army has said that for each rocket that lands Israel, they are going to destroy 10 Lebanese apartment buildings as an revenge.
And don't say that much of the land of palestinians has been returned. That is simply not true. just a tiny part of Gaza has been returned to palestinians, but nothing else. And Israel is still controlling that area with iron grip Israel has returned some destert to Egypt, but that is separate issue.
There are still millions of palestinians refugees. And until the ethnical cleansing done by Israel is resolved in a fair way, there won't be peace. Arab countries have offered Israel a peace on the condition of Israel withdrawing behind the borders before 1967 war, but Israel has refused this offer and is constantly and illegally building illegal outposts to the occupied territory and same time preventing palestinians building houses there even though palestinian populations is growing and desperately needs more houses.
I am not so sure about your claim that German is harder to learn than English. I have learned both German and English as foreign a language (my mother tongue is Finnish and it is not related to German or English) and although I have better language skills in English which I use more often than German, I have found German much easier to learn. It's same at least in Finland (even though I am not interested in that contest and don't even know which country won the competition). Maybe it has something to do with camp humour which seems to be popular among gays.
I think we should react by sending letters, e-mail to that school, tell others about this school using blogs etc. With enough coverage the school should face some financial setbacks and other companiens that are considering something similar would perhaps think twice.
I wonder what happends if that elevator stucks for some reason with a person inside it. Will he have anough air to breath while waiting for somebody to let him out?
And wouldn't it be easier to build a similar regular elevator (without counterweight if dimension of that elevator must remain small), but with more common technology and without need of air tightneds..
Why don't you check your facts. Calipari was the killed agent. The person you are talking about is Giuliana Sgrena.
And some references to some unreleased "satellite photos" aren't really credible source of information especially after US has been caught in blatant lying about WMD evidence and about torture in Guantanamo, Afganistan and in Iraq.

It is perfectly possible to asseble the shredded pieces together and read the original document in typical cases. Iranians did this the shredded documents in US embassy during the hostage crisis ovar 20 years ago even though there were enourmous amounts of shredded papers.
