Oh, sir, I didn't intend to be pejorative by saying "communists and anarchists", but it's the truth (at least on european and african indymedias). Sometimes you need such extremes to balance a society. And we must admit that most occidental societies are basically neoliberal, disguised as center or right-wing. It's not like we're gonna assist to a massive communist-anarchist revolution or something, but we need these extremes to make a comparison with what we have. Even the other extremes, such as fascism, are also neccesary to make a proper balance.

It's just a matter of balance and equilibrium. Or theology and geometry if you prefer ;)

I read that book some years agou and found it to be an excellent piece of sci-fi. The problem is that to develop that set of squares and fit them together they needed a special kind of indestructible metal to build both the ring, the squares and the wire that did the consistency job to such squares. But I agree with you, it's an ingenious device: it provided both shadow and energy.

Long story short, it's a worldwide network of internet resources for communists and anarchists usually located around local indymedia pages. They use these resources to organize social events and stuff like that. Sometimes I participate of such events, they are mostly orientated to civil rights and antiglobalization stuff.

Apart from that, they also provide hosting solutions to social and radical groups, specially local Hacklabs on which I partitipate frequently.

  12. Re:Useless on 45GB Triple-Layer HD DVDs · · Score: 1

The thing is that I *really* understand what I'm talking about. I've been in the DV world since ppl used dirt tricks to backup movies using crappy MPEG encoders to make VCD.

What you must understand is that, even with a 45 GB disk, you cannot store full resolution/br movies with lossless video and audio. You need _at least_ 1 TB to do so with raw data. Even if you use lossless video codecs the kind of Huffyuv (audio doesn't matter in comparison) you'll still need hundreds of GB to do so.

But this is not the point. Memory in the in the future is not going to spin. It's that simple. Because that kind of devices fail because mechanical stress, and disks are weak no matter what you hear about them.

When I say "proof of concept" I mean that this technology is a field to try new concepts. This is never going to be released to the wild but it's useful for testing new ways of storing data. Blue-ray is just a joke unless it becomes a new standard accepted by everyone, just as happened (after a few years of hard fight between manufacturers) with DVD.

The fact is that Blu-ray and this very technology is using obsolete technology to read (not storing) data. DVD will be dead when you find a way to read data that is both reliable and safe for the media, and it won't happen in several years. Certainly it won't happen with discs spinning at 6000 rpm or more.

BTW, you *can* purchase Blu-ray players and media since mid 2004. Well, they were launched, but the prices are so high that nobody risks taking the technology outside Japan.

  13. Re:Hell, at that price on Indian Company Shows Off Sub-$200 Laptop · · Score: 1

Sure, man. And then, the price will rise high because of high demand and lack of parts.

They should forbid the exportation of the device for an initial amount of time, to avoid this. The other solution is not to forbid, and at the beggining the price will be so high that nobody in India would be able to afford it, but eventually it would drop to a reasonable price...

  14. Useless on 45GB Triple-Layer HD DVDs · · Score: 1

This is the type of technology that is never going to be released. Blu-ray is failing miserably. There's another DVD standard on the go. Lots of hype, but this huge capacity DVD is only useful as a research tool, I mean, as technology basis for other developments and proof of concept.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

Don't generalize. I've a lot of ppl on my office complaining about how much longer Firefox takes to load comparing to IE. And what about OOo... Yes, I know, IE is mostly preloaded when Win starts. It does not matter because it loads much faster.

Believe me, for an Average Joe desktop user, startup time is WAY important.

  18. Re:I Dub Thee too, "Sir Troll" on Graphical Gentoo Installer In The Works · · Score: 1

But man, it's not really about compile-time optimizations stuff. It's about dependence control. You can control which dependences of an app you want to build (if they're optional of course), so you can reduce significantly footprint, improve speed and load times by not having to load a truckload of unneeded libraries.

Compile-time optimizations usually come in handy, and can make your system a bit more responsive. But this is only a small part of the advantage of using gentoo.

Well, you usually know that you have partitions named in this way, the configuration files lay in this folder and this is the place to change network configuration, without any all-powerfull app that controls everything, which means that your configuration is always going to stay the same if you do not explicitely touch the config files.

When you have problems, you're more likely able to resolve them if you know how your OS operates, mainly because you've put together all parts. You're not a linux guru by installing Gentoo, but if you manage to install it by reading the handbook you're going to learn lots of things that could come in handy later.

For example, imagine that you've lost your LILO because you reinstalled Window$. One of the first steps of the Handbook is to chroot into your new Gentoo base system and operate from it. You only need to use maybe 1% of your brain to realize that from this point you can reinstall your lilo.

This is an OS done for ppl that wants to mess a bit more than normal with their machines. Ok, there's also portage that allows you to install optimized programs without unneeded dependences, and I also love it. I have a powerful machine because all of this. But I could be running Kubuntu and I will be equally happy with my machine. It's just a matter of election :)
