Yes, because typing in "apt-get" or "emerge" makes so much more sense to new users than double-clicking an icon that says "setup".
And where does that setup icon come from? I don't see an icon on windows that can download almost any program, compile it, and install it automatically.
I put in the CD and it took about 3 minutes to copy everything, and then I had to reboot the fucking computer! Jesus Christ! What a retarded operating system!"
You do realise that you're comparing the quake 3 install process to downloading video drivers and configuring X.org, right?
At my primary school, the servers were all NT4, although that wouldn't really be considered a "respected company". At my high school everything runs on Win2k, except for a content filter, which runs some sort of UNIX, Linux I assume.
The important thing that many people seem not to know is this,
It works. *DO NOT* fuck with it.
Sure, on your desktop system there is no problem with upgrading, you can slowly make the change throughout the userbase. But the servers cannot afford to have anything bad happen. If it already works, there isn't any reason to change it. That is why many people use NT4.

Most people don't seem to really care about all these laws, unless they KNOW they are going to hurt them directly.
That would account for the Patriot Act, the anti-drug laws, etc. etc.
Also, let's face it...no-one is able to compete with corporations and their bribes that they use to get all these laws passed (DMCA, etc. etc.).
But still...it's not much better here in Australia. At least most of us KNOW that the US is sending everyone it can to Cuba. Which doesn't seem to be the case in the US. The system doesn't really work though, no.

The difference being most people don't commit murder...my point was that current laws have not been effective, and have not gained us anything except more prisoners.
I mean think about it...you're making laws which you know most people don't follow. If most people don't follow them, why do you think they want them?
Because if it is licensed only for OSS projects, then MS and the like cannot use them without opening up their source code.
AFAIK, IBM makes most of their money in hardware and support, and helping OSS is an advantage to them. They don't get much of an advantage by helping other companied become richer. So they don't help them.
Over here in Australia, you can just buy a SIM card for $30 which gives you prepaid on whatever phone you've got. And you can buy phones with them in too (I got a T100 a year ago, it has plenty of features).
You don't replace the SIM card, what you do is you go to a store, and then they give you a card with a phone number and code on it, which you call, and then give the code to the phone company. This just adds however many dollars you payed for to the account.

Sorry, my bad...It's been a while since I slept;)
The thing is, it's normal for teenagers to want to do things that their parents don't want them to. Not to mention just having fun...the idea is to do these things while you're still a kid, before you move on to other things, and when it may have more effect on the rest of your life.
Actually, I would have said it was more like "Today terrorists have announced that they have armed an atomic bomb in the middle of Los Angeles. If it goes off, it may burn you!"
Since microwaves are on the same band, you could have saved yourself the work and just used the same size ;)

IIRC, it works on the nightlies.
To be honest though, I think Slashdot's shitty HTML may be at least partly at fault.

Which ISP?????
"work" with an OS other than Win/Mac,
I just copied my new Silverchair album from my Linux PC to my iPod mini using gtkpod. It works fine, your point is not valid.

We have both ways over here in Australia, and while my phone came with the service, I made sure to get one that wasn't network locked.
But you couldn't say that you made it, you have to give credit to the Mozilla Foundation.
IS that a joke? Is the US really that bad???

US telcos seem like a joke.

It works fine for me.
Cleaner UI, and you don't have to worry about how it renders in IE.
Yeah, but, now, there's a hell of a lot of other stuff in the landfills.
Not to mention that you don't want this to be happening on your mission-critical server.
What's it do? Java or normal HTTPS?

Maybe you should switch banks.
Over here in Australia, my bank is Java, so completely cross platform.

One would assume that any vulerability that could run arbitary code would be able to delete files.
Take: to get into one's hands or into one's possession, power, or control: as a : to seize or capture physically
It seems that this requires something to be in your possesion. Which it clearly is not.
Why arent we teaching kids that stealing is wrong?
Or perhaps we should rephrase that...
Why are we teaching kids that sharing is good?
