At what point did having many people on seperate networks all using up someone elses bandwidth for only the purpose of taking away their usable bandwidth become something other than a DDoS?
Course, if I want to send emails from school I'm fucked (probably, they use Squid as a proxy, which didn't compile on Windows for me, so you never know what they use for mail servers, if they have their own).
But for the most part, schools and somesuch are windows-only from my experience.
It works fairly well for the most part though...I was just about the whole IT staff for my school back when I was in yr 7. I had to bring the server down once in two years, which isn't too bad.
And it's not just 5 year olds that we educate on "Mess with this powerpoint and you'll die". I'm 15 atm, and we did that in our electronics class. For 2 weeks.
And the slightly more complicated stuff we were taught (how the wiring works, wire colours, voltages, etc. etc.), was quite often wrong. I'm talking about things like wire colours.
I mean, I've done mains wiring, I know how it works. But I wouldn't have if i knew "red wire is active, black is neutral, green is earth", and then cut the insulation to find a brown, blue, green/yellow wire. Yes, you can make a fair gues of which is which. You're just really, really, really, really, really stupid if you guess on something that's gonna have 240V running through it.
This kind of tactic, if not outright illegal, is
a grey area...now perhaps, if you simply made a
script to go through the emails, put every link
on a list, and used spare bandwidth to request
pages from all of the links that have been
sent, that could be legal, but still a grey area.
What I don't think is a good idea is a company
deciding who deserves to be DDoSed. In that
sense, it is little better than MyDoom, which
also attacked unpopular companies.
Personally, I think we should try to take
down companies that use spam for advertising
legally, rather than using a DDoS. But I might
not have the popular view, you never know.
Over here drug dealers who have had all their heroin seized are able to file it as a loss...even compared to things like that, they have no chance of getting anywhere.
If you know exactly what you want to install then you can cut down the number of commands by quite a lot, by just putting all the packages on the end of one emerge command.
The thing is, if you only buy the tracks that you already like, you aren't going to hear much new music. Most of my favourite songs haven't been the ones I've bought the CD for.
I agree, except I'm 15, and had just been rejected, had a fairly serious neck injury, and a lot of painkillers.
Gotta have something to keep it all coming during the holidays, so I figured, why not continue making my life hell? For the next week, I compiled it, having to repeat often, because the power kept going out.
The documentation made it easy though, and after recompiling the kernel a few times, to get my config perfect, I had it running.
But yes, it taught me a huge amount about Linux....6 months with RH8 doesn't teach you as much as you learn by compiling the base Gentoo install (w/ X, Gnome, KDE, OO.org, AbiWord, etc. etc).
Up until that point, I was primarily a Windows user (with Cygwin of course). I still wouldn't recommend it to people new to Linux (although.....portage...so hard to resist...), but Knoppix/Mandrake/others are meant for that spot.
I just recharge mine every night, it's an Ericsson T100. It lasts a few days, but what is the point of letting it run down? Just lowers the battery's lifetime.
But I thought to be a DDoS it just had to be stealing a large amount of their bandwidth, from a large number of locations.
Well I haven't seen one in Australia yet ;)
By legally I mean not using an illegal method.

has slowed to a crawl, Here's the cache.
When you let people read that stuff without restriction, you're basically saying that it's ok.
By censoring it, they are saying that it is bad, and that if you do read it, it must be kept secret.
Ok...so there are some slight problems with the implementation details.

Of course, the whole school is behind NAT.

Being in high school, I'd have to say one thing:
;)
No, we can't get laid
I meant to use a method of removing spammers from the internet that is not illegal.

But they're not directly connected to the internet anyway. Or at least I hope not.
You'd think all the ISPs giving away firewalls/routers along with their connections would help too.
That probably helps with a lot of the problems, but not people voluntarily downloading it of course.
Lithium polymer, relatively new type of battery. I'm only 15, so haven't got the money to get one to play around with ;)
For some (basic) information on power storage tech, try here.

You should try Japanese.
;)
A whole page of symbols with no spaces, or paragraphing. Somewhat intimidating

What sort of battery? I have a Li-ion, which will need to be replaced every 18-24 months probably, but in return, I get a phone that is under 100g.
Ni-cd/Ni-mh batteries last longer, but they are heavier and bulkier for the same capacity.
Yeah, but always bendy ;)

Doesn't mean I don't love Gentoo though.

(s)he" is just plain ugly
Yeah, reminds me of lisp too.
A serious "hacker" doesn't need an interface!
;)
He just uses a wire, a battery, an NIC, and has very fast hands
