It's easier when you've learned to use a CLI.
I started out on a DOS box (can't remember what sort, it was 9 years ago). I'm 14 now, moved a couple of my computers to Linux a few months ago, when I got hold of some RH8 CDs (I have 56k, but use 33k modem, since my 56k is a Winmodem, bad for stability), had no immediate problems.
The reason people have problems is that they don't like using the keyboard. Teach kids to use a keyboard, and they can do anything. Don't and they can't.
Claims one and two alone would cover every OS in existance:
A static memory allocation system for use in a computer system allocating memory for executing programs, said static memory allocation system comprising:
linkage editor means for storing information about an amount of memory required at initialization of an executable program, in a management information section of a file containing the executable program by obtaining the amount of memory required, when each program is translated, assembled or compiled to produce a corresponding executable program;
loader means for automatically loading the executable program into memory, for reading the information about the amount of memory required when the executable program is initialized, stored in the management information section of the file, when the executable program is loaded; and
memory management section means for statically allocating the amount of memory indicated in the information read by said loader means is statically allocated memory for the executable program to be loaded into by said loader means.
Okay, that covers working out how much stack space you need at compile time
The static memory allocation system according to claim 1, further comprising:
program executor means for dynamically allocating additional memory, when the statically allocated memory is insufficient during program execution
And that covers malloc()
Well, it seems like we have a patent against memory allocation.
I don't know how I survived before I downloaded Cygwin...it makes my life worth living (my parents bought me a computer with a Winmodem, then a CD jukebox with only Windows drivers...I'd put on Fedora, if it weren't for the jukebox (i get ADSL in a week, so no modem to worry about)).
Can software exist without people to buy it? Yes, it's possible, but it would never happen. Can software exist without developers? Not possible at all.
Our current methods of gently killing people don't seem to be much of a deterrent
Well, they are only killing people: impaling would be considered torture, and therefore unconstitutional. Not to mention that no-one really deserves that kind of punishment. All you are doing is stooping to their level.
And don't forget, no matter how hard you try, you will convict innocent people. Think that they should get tortured to death too? At least with current methods they don't have to spend several hours in extreme pain to die.
DISCLAIMER: I am against capital punishment anyway
I know this isn't what was meant by security, but kids should also be taught about security against viruses, etc.
Stuff like "This is a firewall. You use it like this." "Don't click.exes in email". I learnt the fast way: I have to clean up the family computer when it gets infected. Use VMWare if need be, kids should know how to keep a system secure.
I just don't leave the computer on its own now.....my family uses Outlook, so I have to make sure that they use the webmail interface through Firefox.
Drinking in the morning causes problems by 12:10AM.....I picture a small guy in the basement, who drinks one light beer a week. And he just emptied a whole bottle of vodka.
From the sound of what you said, I'm assuming you're talking about Rambus and their RDRAM back in the Williamette days.
That is an interestnig idea, and it could work, but perhaps simply making all lawsuits invalid in that single case would be better than voiding the patent.
As an Australian child (14), I agree. Someone should fuck me ;)
If you tried, you would in fact notice that you can see when you have a welding mask on, before you strike the arc.
Yes, it is legal. I live in Australia, and AFAIK, we have no constitutionally protected freedom of speech.
No, it was Debt of Honour. The planes shot down were Japanese AWACS planes, modified 737s, IIRC.
Debt of Honour was about Japan, Executive Orders was Iran.
I'd say computer geek, seeing as:
Of course, judging by the fact that I just wrote that list, I might fall into the dork category
Its worth it for the spam free mailbox. I can live with the anthrax threat though.

We have nothing to do but become pastier and pastier while trying out distros.
Get an old CRT, sit in front of it for ~6 hours a day, and you'll have a tan. Works for me.
Well, I'm 14, so I have 2 go out for school, and that "natural light" or whatever it's called could be giving me a tan. Meh....
or perhaps our wives' strong grip on our wallets
;)
I get the feeling that this isn't the case for most readers of that site

Then I thought of programming, but what can you really teach a kid in 10 minutes
You could teach a bit of C++ in a weekend, that's how long it took me to learn the very basic stuff (functions, variables, expressions, etc).
but I'd prefer to see different sorts of things applied to infants, like those shock collars that go off if they go 'out of bounds'
;)
It just might be a bit dangerous to put electricity through an area containing a nerve which can stop a person's heart
ummmmm...I thought they were the same thing?
If not, I wonder which I am.
Vinegar is an acid. Trust me: acid + computer = not good.
They have them already. Or, at least special ops do.
How much of the target audience leaves their basement, anyway?

Look buddy, OSS differs from CSS only in how you decide to license it.
And who can contribute - if I find a bug in GPLed software, I can fix it myself, send in a patch, done.
CSS requires me to wait for the dev team to find the bug, fix it, and make a patch.
Good enough diff?
But how many of the accounts are actually being used? Why pay for storage for an inactive account? That's the complicated part.
they probably don't have the money to run their own home LAN or the RAM/CPU power to run lots of demanding apps at once
And the internet doesn't count as networking?
