  5. Lump of cells != human being (IMHO) on Stem-Cell-Like Cells Produced From Skin · · Score: 1

If not, how do you ethically justify doing the same thing to that mass of cells?

A mass of cells, even structured as a human being in any of it's development stages, is not necessarily a human being, IMHO.

A lump of cells no matter how organized is no Martha, Steve, Jane or Joe. However, a lump of human cells with a fully functional central nervous system and the potential to sustain it's own life given the correct environment, now that's my candidate for the human being tag. A teratoma, for example, is not a human being, not even the ones that develop rudimentary nervous systems (I think I've read that some even respond to stimuli like being pinched with a needle, but don't quote me on that)

The only cogent logical argument for definition of life other than "life begins at conception" that I've heard...

My particular view is: between conception and the time when the different types of tissues are being differentiated it's alive, but not a human being, and I don't think an abortion at this point is unethical (ducks for cover).

Of course, this is just my unwashed opinion, and anyone is entitled to disagree (politely).

Black holes don't produce x-rays, but the material falling into them does produce x-rays which, since they're produced outside the black hole, can escape.

So, if a black hole is "alone" with no significant matter nearby to attract and consume, it is invisible @ the x-ray part of the spectrum, yet it's gravitational pull affects other bodies not necessarily near. IANAA, but, isn't this case a good candidate for resolving the dark matter issue?

  10. Human Nature? on Berners-Lee Challenges 'Stupid' Male Geek Culture · · Score: 1

Does it really require a certain type of personality? I'm a very capable female computer engineer, however, due to my emotionality, and my passive nature, I get stomped on at work, and treated extremely poorly.
So, like me, you get the business end of the human nature gun. I'm a very capable male computer engineer, and i also have a very passive nature.

Once, I got into this political mess with a coworker, a mano-a-mano with a guy that was the boss' protege so to speak, and I nearly had a frickin nervous breakdown because I was sure this guy (a guy with zero technical worth, but a weasel) was going to push some buttons and get me fired, and my reputation smeared, by proxy. Fortunately that didn't happen, and actually found out that the boss had me in a higher esteem than I thought, but nonetheless this other guy's intentions were targeted to "cutting my throat" so to speak if I got in his way, and he actually suggested that to me so once.

The point I'm trying to make is that basic human nature probably has more to do with the situation you're describing than plain sexual discrimination. Power struggles, competition, backstabbing (we call it "sawing somebody else's feet" here :) ), malicious gossip, are all part of any human gathering, even of educated individuals, and not necessarily a male or female thing.

Humans aren't made with cookie cutters, all of us have different personalities, and the fact that your friend is tomboyish (as you describe her) just says that she is an individual with a powerful personality, so she thrives in that environment.

Or then again is just discrimination . . . I'm not there with you to have a clearer view of the situation.

    Just my zwei/dos/two cents.
