The problem with those commercials is they are really talking software.. Windows software to be specific. (that's why the "loser" bears a resemblance to Bill). To call the Windows guy "PC" is somewhat stupid. A PC is a personal computer. Isn't a Mac a personal computer ?.. PC used to mean x86 computer, but now a Mac is Intel... So, now are only "Windows computers" to be called PC ? And what do I call my Linux computer ?

I think when a project has a decent framework to build on, open source does pretty well with it.. ie OpenOffice and Firefox. Since I run Linux, I am probably a little biased considering everything I use is open sourced.

People throughout the muslim world are beginning to beleive we are against all muslums. You want to stop all this, then you do it the proper way.. with JUSTICE. A person commits a crime, you arest them, try them, and sentence them. You show the world that this person that commited a crime is punished, and that criminals are stupid to commit crimes.. nothing was accomplished by this person. To fight terrorists you have to change the way they think. As long as they can get reactions that further their cause by doing these horrible things, they will continue to do so. Their own people make them heros, because they are trying to fight for them. When something better works (lawyers and courts perhaps) then terrorism will be seen for what it is.. STUPID. And for that to work, you have to have some kind of diplomacy. To say.."we don't talk to those people" means they can't try and get whatever it is they want. They may have a legitimate beef, and it could be resolved legaly, but is not because no one is talking to them, so they do this stupid crap.

However on the dates in question it turns out Atta was in Florida. The fact that you know about the "meeting" but not that it was investigated and discovered that it never took place should say something to you. You should also know that when Iraq invaded Kuwait that al Qaeda wanted to go there and remove him, they were on opposite sides, not allies. There are now plenty of al Qaeda in Iraq however, and many other newly created groups.

It was not a mistake that so many gay marriage ban propositions (11 states) ended up on the ballots of the presidential election. Things were close and the right wing USED this to get people to the polls. They also USE the boogyman (terrorisim) very effectively.. you yourself are terrified aren't you ? Let me set you straight.. Although an "At Will" employer could tell you you no longer work there, and not tell you why.. they WILL have to give a reason to the state unemployment office. The whole hiring firing scheme of at will is to prevent wrongful termination suits, but they can still be brought just as easily, so the reason given to the state must be well thought out. I doubt very much that someone making barely over min wage is going to fight it though, so in these situations the at will thing is used to crack the whip in a job nobody wants anyway.
It is always a good idea to give notice, even to jerks. If you have already obtained another job you are in much better shape, but if you are quitting to find another job you might need their reference. Most employers have policy of only verifying employment dates to protect them from lawsuits.. but it is not a LAW that they can not tell your good and bad points, it is just to protect them. If an employer says your the best and you turn out to be some psyco they could be sued, if they say your bad and you find out about it they can be sued. But there are still some employers who will still actualy talk about an employee that used them as a reference, so it would be a gamble to screw them over in a crunch with out already having another job.

On what basis can you call the neighbor using the mosquito device paranoid ? Just going by what has been said in the article the only one exhibiting "paranoid" behavoir is the author. I am not saying the neighbor isn't annoying, but it is the author who says the neighbor is out to get HIM. I think I need more evidence about the neighbor to conclude that this is intentional harrassment. For one I would like to know if there is indeed any mosquito problems in the area. I would also like to know what attempts besides calling the cops were made to resolve the situation. There are lots of gnome themes that people have contributed. It is a bit more complicated than windows though, when you like a theme, but want to tweak the colors.
For example... I liked the theme GreenHeart controls with Slate window border, but to truely make it like I wanted.. I had to open both the tz.gz files and load almost every image into gimp and adjust colors.. and then decipher the gtkrc file and change some hex numbers to adjust other colors as well... save everything.. Then had to re-zip and install it.. it was a good part of a lazy Saturday to accomplish.. I am very happy with the results though !.. and for good measure I hacked up an xmms skin to match it.:)
But all in all, there are so many combo's of controls and borders that pertty much anyone can find something to their liking.

However for that scenario, there are better alternitives that wouldn't depend on the system your logging onto (that may or may not go down) You could carry around a thumb drive with your data (and apps), and a bootable thumb drive for your os (or a bootable CD such as Knoppix)

Most people now, including law enforcement, don't really care all that much about people using marijuana. There are also hemp products on the market. I personaly don't have a problem with people who smoke pot. even though I don't myself. But I do know that most of the pot smokers I know also indulge in other recreational drugs. Here is where I draw the line.. If you smoke pot I am fine with that. But I have real issues with tweakers, and people who use pain killers, and coke, and heroin.

Well I am hoping that your addiction analogy was just a bad analogy. You could say the same thing about speed limits. I have the right to drive 180 miles an hour on the freeway as long as I don't hit anyone. Now with both analogies everything is fine, and yeah freedom !, but the chances are very high with both that something bad is going to happen, that WILL infringe on others rights. There are many more downsides to drug addiction than just the illegality of being under the influence of a drug, and you could go to any N/A meeting and hear the stories of people who not only ruined their life, but others around them.

It depends.. My freind has an older system I am trying to get Ubuntu on, with some difficulty. It's a CDrom drive issue, and although this sytem does boot from CDrom it craps out. Now, at home with a "slightly" newer machine there is absoulutely no problem.. pop in the CD answer a couple questions and wait for that new puppy to appear.
You are 100 percent right about the USING linux, I think both issues are misunderstood by the masses. Linux is not hard to use, and installing it is (usually) not difficult at all.
