I want Sony's second gen reader too. You'll have a problem with PDF's though. The Reader has issues with the PDF format because it doesn't have an 8.5x11 display and the size is an issue. Might be fixed in the new version.

Are you sure you pay attention to the politics of Indiana? We have one Republican and one Democratic senator, both of which lay pretty firmly in the 'moderate' sector. Our last Governor was Democrat, and some of our longest lasting Governors were also Democrats. Not to mention most state polls imply 'Our Man Mitch(R)' doesn't have a chance in hell of being re-elected as Governor.

Meanwhile, a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage fell apart in the state senate this April, getting far more opposition than a similar ban did in Ohio (a flip state). I almost threw a party in celebration. The big-bad,evil, money-loving corporations stepped up and said they'd lose employees if they couldn't give rights to life partners. Thank goodness for Eli Lilly.

Sure, I'll admit, we always vote Red on the Presidential Ballot, but thats just one aspect of our political topography, and it's certainly no reason to lump the politics and personality of our citizens into one giant red-neck cliche.

Why do you feel the need to disparage and condone the state you live in? Considering you've never lived anywhere else, are you certain that these 'red state' sensibilities that you consider synonymous with blind idiocy aren't really just a product of human nature and aren't prevalent in all parts of the world?
Anyway, since this is the internet, and we're suppose to be judgemental and insulting: Stop being a small-minded, angsty, prick, and try appreciating the world you live in for a change.

Oh and I'm an Indiana, registered-republican moderate, female, pro-choice, pro-death penalty, broke, agnostic, college graduate, I hate Nascar and country music, and I'm so angry I could spit over this BP scandal, I love that lake. I didn't vote for Mitch the first time and I won't be doing it next time either.

I'm a citizen of Indiana and I was furious when I read it in the paper this morning. A measly eighty jobs in exchange for further ruining of our lake front! It's unconscionable. Our free lake front swimming is one of our state treasures. Miles of sand, trails, and surf.

That said, I imagine there was a lot of pressure on the state legislatures at a federal level. They see it as a chance to decrease Middle Eastern dependence. The whole idea makes me furious.

  7. Re:a little anecdote... on Record Store Owners Blame RIAA For Destroying Music Industry · · Score: 1

Like it or not, those store owners were being truthful. Piracy is killing the music industry. Not that the RIAA labels don't need to be put down like the lampreys they are, but the days of the giants are waning fast.

While there is truth in what you said, I'd argue that change would have come even if all the online downloading was legal.

Change comes to the world. Most towns don't have a milliner, shoemaker, or candlestick maker in modern times, though we still buy hats, shoes, and candles.

Nor do you see a lot of wandering minstrels working for pennies, with no copyright to the songs they write. Instead we live in a world where it costs $15+ to just have the right to listen to the music, leaving us no rights to sing or share it(or the lyrics) among our friends. Meanwhile, an army of middlemen collect the profits.

The government and lawyers artificially supporting the industry won't stop the sob story of change and loss. When all is said and done, there is still a market for candles and there will always be a profitable market for music. It just won't have the same face.

Oh and I agree that movies are on safer ground. For $18 I can get two hours of a movie plus extras that I already know I'll like... or I can spend $15 and get an hour of music with only one or two songs I've heard before and no promise that the others will be good. It isn't just the pirating effort, even if you could get it easy illegally, most people consider $15-20 for a hard copy of a movie pretty reasonable.

Sorry but I doubt my copies of the Marx Brothers or Futurama get any better in HD. Will future movies look better? Yes. Do I see a reason to upgrade my collection? No. There is plenty of old music that is only in Mono, but we buy it on CD in quality formats... because it's cheep and we already own a CD player. When HD formats become as prolific as the CD, I'll buy it. Until then I'll stick with my 'cassette tape' called DVD.

And frankly I don't think that day will come. CD's were an infinite improvement on Cassette in more ways than just recording quality. DVD's were a great improvement on VHS. HD... just looks prettier and holds more. I don't need a LotR level of special features with every movie I rent or buy.

Anyway format wars aren't the topic. I agree with you. As far as I'm concerned when you buy a CD to upgrade your music you're buying the convenience. The average consumer doesn't see it as a re-purchase of their licence. If they wanted to upgrade formats themselves, they should be allowed too.

The 1080 is displaying as 720, the low end of HD. A standard MPEG2 DVD is capable of producing 720. One must also keep in mind that though a game is made for the PS3, that does not assure that it will be full HD or even 720p. It's all up to the publishers and how they value the time, effort, and cost.

I admit I'm jaded and think the format war is full of hooey. There is very little about either HD DVD format that really makes it worth your while, not at the cost of all new equipment and libraries. IMHO.

Oh and the laser for BlueRay is completely different from the traditional DVD laser. You'd have a hard time getting a player that does both. I have a HD TV but there's no reason for me to get a new version of my Marx Brothers collection or LotR. The new disk might be HD but just like your TV signal, if the recording is in anyway sub par it's going to be that much more noticeable on a HD disk.

Yes I agree that there are reasons to archive and I'd never suggest we just get rid of them all. What I would suggest, in this case, is that archives edit out personal data that could be used for easy identity theft (credit card numbers shouldn't be saved). Thats all.

And no, my blog entry on spores and fungus can hardly be used for nefarious purposes. When you put information on the internet about yourself, you've made your bed and taken that risk. When someone else posts personal information about you on the internet thats something else entirely. Not that you can place a blanket law against that either as that would restrict freedom of the press.
